Artist: Atlantic Starr Title: Time Year Of Release: 1994 Label: Arista [07822-18723-2] Genre: Funk, Soul, R&B, Disco Quality: FLAC (tracks+.cue,log) Total Time: 43:37 Total Size: 313 MB AllMusic Review by Craig Lytle: Considered one of the top R&B bands since the genre's inception, this effort is primarily one pop number after another aimed at the adult contemporary market. Since the release of their 1985 classic "Secret Lovers" (#3 Billboard pop charts), Atlantic Starr has geared much of their material toward the crossover market. This project follows suit with the exception of a few cuts. The leadoff single "I'll Remember You" struggled on the Billboard R&B and pop charts, peaking at #58 and #55 respectively. Aside from its semi-catchy chorus, the song's ignition stalls. "Let's Just Sneak Around" has a soulful, urban feel enhanced by Wayne Lewis' gritty delivery. "Everybody's Got Summer," which pairs David Lewis and featured female vocalist Aisha Tanner, has an attractive beat, but it is charged by a sample from Young-Holt Unlimited's "Soulful Strut." The one song that comes close to that magic the group created in their heyday is "Lovin' You All Over Again." Artist: Don Friedman Title: Dreams And Explorations (Remastered) Year Of Release: 1998 (1964) Label: OJC, Riverside [OJCCD-1907-2] Genre: Post-Bop, Modern Jazz Quality: FLAC (tracks+.cue,log,scans) Total Time: 42:12 Total Size: 356 MB Pianist Don Friedman first collaborated with Hungarian guitarist Attila Zoller as part of Herbie Mann's 1964-66 rhythm section. But the pair first explored the depths of their musical relationship in this excellent and aptly titled quartet session. Recorded in 1964, the same year Zoller won Down Beat's Talent Deserving Wider Recognition award, Dreams and Explorations is a challenging, evocative program of creative, improvised music that is never as predictable as traditional bop nor as ponderous, pretentious or piercing as free jazz. There is an "open" quality to the music that allows for both interaction and exploration, yet the listener is never baffled by any journey any one musician takes. The three jazz standards ("Israel," "Darn That Dream" and "You Stepped Out of A Dream") are instructive of the quartet's investigative methodology (reminiscent of the boundaries from which Paul Bley was breaking free during the same period). But the real beauty lies in the less structured journeys the two leaders conceive. There is Friedman's 'unwritten' "Episodes" and the twelve tone rows of "Park Row. Then there's Zoller's freer "Exploration" and the intriguing freedom-in-a-foundation of "Blizzard." The thesis is movement, or the ability to inspire motion. It is about the musicians' ability to explore at will and the listener's intuition to be moved (physically or emotionally) by the sounds. A daunting concept. But it actually works. Zoller achieves a beautiful sound that is filled with fluid, always assured conceptions and Friedman glides so effortlessly over wide-reaching ideas, that you are dazzled by the sparkle of his imagination only after the fact. Friedman and Zoller, having sensed such a powerful musical chemistry, recorded in more duo situations (until Zoller's death earlier this year). But this is the one to hear. It was the penultimate year of World War I, the year of the Russian Revolution, and a year that saw artistic and cultural changes take place. This compilation explores the music inspired by the turbulent times at the beginning of the twentieth century. Each work tells part of the story of this pivotal year, for example: Respighi's Fountains of Rome was premiered in 1917 after Toscanini refused to conduct it the previous year after it had been programmed alongside music by Wagner; Ravel's Tombeau de Couperin was completed in 1917. Each movement is dedicated to a friend who had been killed in the war; Satie's Parade was a true collaboration across creative worlds: sets and costumes by Pablo Picasso, scenario by Jean Cocteau, music by Erik Satie, and danced by the Ballets Russes in 1917; Shostakovich's monumental Symphony no.12 "The Year 1917" was written in 1961 in the heart of Communist Russia. It has been suggested that Shostakovich originally wrote a satire of Lenin but due to the potential danger had to recompose the piece at the last minute. Everyone Is Gonna Love Me Now 5:17 Ingrid Michaelson's sixth studio album, 2014's Lights Out, is a polished, well-produced effort that magnifies all of the sounds and lyrical themes she's been working with since breaking through with 2007's Girls and Boys. Michaelson even seems to reference that album with her Lights Out lead single, the infectious "Girls Chase Boys." However, where Girls and Boys centered around Michaelson's intimate ukulele and acoustic guitar-driven dorm room pop, Lights Out features a broadened sonic palette and a much more robust vocal performance; it's a transformation she's been perfecting since 2009's Everybody and 2012's Human Again. This time out, Michaelson has enlisted a handful of producers who include, among others, her bandmate bassist Chris Kuffner, Jacquire King (Modest Mouse, Norah Jones), and singer/songwriter Katie Herzig. Michaelson even reunites with longtime collaborator Dan Romer for the epic ballad "Over You," featuring A Great Big World. While there are a few of Michaelson's trademark intimate breakup songs here, including the tear-inducing "Open Hands," overall the album reveals Michaelson to be in a bright, upbeat state of mind. Cuts like the bluesy, handclap-heavy "Warpath" and the similarly fiery "Time Machine," with its '90s-esque sax samples, are more emblematic of the album's ambitious, empowered tone. Elsewhere, we get the catchy dance-pop duet "One Night Town" with Mat Kearney and the uplifting anthem "Afterlife." There's also a very in-the-moment feeling of both poignancy and happiness to Lights Out, which is perhaps best expressed in the midtempo Beatlesque ballad "Wonderful Unknown," featuring Michaelson's husband, singer/songwriter Greg Laswell. In it, Michaelson ruminates on the small details of her everyday life, singing "We make bread on Sundays and the little ones are climbing the walls/Up the walls/Nothing lasts forever but the sound of love astounds me every time that it calls." Dream Of A Better World Calvin Russell is the real deal, an authentic Texas-born cowboy whose face is a trail of hard-earned lines, proof of the rough mileage he's put on his body since his birth in 1948 in Austin. For someone who likes Texas and Russell's brand of country music, the act of researching his life and misadventures could be fun if it weren't for one thing: all the juicy stuff -- including Russell's stint in jail -- that's been printed about the singing American cowboy is in French. Sometimes it's in another European language. Far less often will you find any significant write-ups in the language of his birthplace, and that's because Russell found his greatest success, professionally and personally, far from home. He is a business owner; the proprietor of a Swiss nightclub. His wife is Swiss. A good percentage of his albums were recorded in Europe. The singer/songwriter was one of nine children born to his working-class parents, Red and Daisy. The family lived on an unpaved road, not far from the town's wrecking yard. His mom was a waitress in the same little caf?? where his dad did the cooking. Calvin Russell, their sixth child, spent his youth putting together hot-rod cars. Before he turned 13, he'd discovered the guitar. Within a year, Russell was playing with an outfit called the Cavemen. A wild time during his teens brought him to the attention of local authorities, who sent him to juvenile detention and, later, prison. At one point in the mid-'80s, he did time in a Mexican jail, where he spent his nights on a cold concrete floor. Upon his release, he headed back to his hometown, where his condition didn't improve much. He made his bed outdoors, in the small area beneath a house, in the dirt. Russell took to the open road on a motorcycle and began to write his songs in the Texas hill country. By 1985, he had a single to his credit. Thanks to a chance meeting with record company executive Patrick Mathe four years later at Austin's Continental Club, Russell landed a contract with the French company that would release many of his albums, New Rose Records. Russell later went on to sign with Sony after New Rose Records folded. New Rose's release of Russell's A Crack in Time album in 1990 caused a stir for the artist, and he started picking up quite a bit of attention. He went on to play festivals in Europe alongside such artists as the Kinks and Little Village. Three more albums followed from New Rose. Le Voyageur is a recording of live shows performed by Russell in such French cities as Rennes and Paris. When the record company was sinking and its assets frozen in bankruptcy proceedings, Russell was very close to having his career tied up in the company's legal woes. Dick Rivers, who had a career decades earlier in pop, rescued Russell when he purchased the singer/songwriter's contract. It's an effortless listen from a group with an incredibly pure sound. With their new album The Third Day, Edinburgh's North Atlantic Oscillation have created a flow of energy deserving of their meteorological namesake. At a time when music is increasingly cut down into single segments for easy digestion, the record - the first they've produced entirely themselves - is woven together as a whole, beautiful body of work, the tracks entwined around each other with no dead space in between. According to vocalist, guitarist and keyboard player Sam Healy, it's an approach that's been building since his childhood introduction to the work of The Beatles. "I think the perfect example of this is Abbey Road, the second side of that," he says. "The legend is that John Lennon was tired and emotional at that point, and tended to spend a lot of time in darkened rooms. So Paul was the one who did the little segues between tracks on side two. The way that those tracks interweave is absolutely fantastic. Even as a kid I remember thinking 'that's really clever, that's a really interesting way to take advantage of your skills as an album writer rather than just a songwriter." The band, completed by Ben Martin (drums, programming) and Chris Howard (bass), formed in 2005, and quickly became known for their intricate, progressive take on rock and electronica, their 2010 debut Grappling Hooks and follow-up Fog Electric gaining them critical praise and plenty of fans with a taste for delicately intelligent music. And while The Third Day is not a concept album like its predecessor, that continuous flow is something Healy intended. He compares it to a shortwave radio sweeping from one station to the next. Though the guitars and vocals were recorded by Healy at home - where he confesses to agonising over the minutiae of the sounds ("If you're doing stuff at home you're not stressing out other people in the studio, they don't have to hear your screams and howls and tears," he says, wryly) - other parts were created in the Irish countryside, at long-time collaborator Peter Meighan's studio. But it was the setting for the drums that was to be the most dramatic. They were recorded in a Victorian mill in Newcastle, up in the rafters while a gale howled through the building.
