And like that, current members and alumni of the drummer's bands: the Matt Wilson Quartet, Arts & Crafts, and Christmas Tree-O assembled to commune and revisit the music Wilson's late wife Felicia loved. This recording was Wilson's first since he lost his wife to leukemia in 2014. It certainly was fitting to perform the compositions she loved, and by the performers Felicia considered her extended family. Instead of a wake, the music is a celebration. One crafted in the true Wilson fashion, without written arrangements or rehearsals. The relaxed groove pervades the session. In "Feel The Sway," you really feel the oscillations of his two-bassists' Yosuke Inoue and Chris Lightcap trio piece and Terell Stafford's growling "Lester" tribute to Lester Bowie with cornet star Kirk Knuffke. Felicia certainly had great taste, as this session acts also like a Matt Wilson greatest hits record. He presents an intimate picture with pieces like "Flowers For Felicia" and the title track. But also there's the wackiness of "Go Team Go!/Endless Love," with a rah-rah cheering section that morphs into Lionel Ritchie's saccharine pop tune and "Schoolboy Thug," a piece Wilson has been known to don a mullet wig for his drum solo, while saxophonist Andrew D'Angelo writhes on the ground. The music is crazy fun, but also gratifyingly sentimental. Larry Goldings solo prepared piano rendition of "How Ya Doin'" tugs at the tear ducts, as does "Getting Friendly," with Knuffke, D'Angelo, and Jeff Lederer proffering whispered notes over Wilson's time keeping pulse. The disc ends with his most beautiful piece, "July Hymn," written originally as a homage to Don Cherry, but from now on it should be expanded to include Felicia Lynn Wilson. Matt Ellis' new, fifth album, recorded and mixed at Wavelab in Tucson, AZ, has a new, tougher sound that recalls the Australian Singer/Songwriters early rock roots. Based in California since 2005, Ellis' sound has evolved effortlessly over the past decade blending Country, Rock and Folk in the tradition of Tom Petty, Neil Young and Ryan Adams. Last December, Ellis and his band headed to Tucson, AZ and recorded 13 tracks over 4 days. Produced by Matt, the live tracks were engineered by Chris Schultz and Craig Schumacher (Neko Case, Calexico, The Jayhawks). Ellis returned home to Los Angeles, CA to complete recording, teaming up with Nick Luca (Calexico, Iron & Wine). The pair spent the following months, setting up in multiple home studios adding Vocals, Fender Rhodes, Piano and additional Guitars, before Matt returned to Tucson to mix the album with Schumacher, the celebrated engineer behind his last two releases. The result is a loose classic rock feel, steeped in Americana and Folk. Ellis' trademark voice is in fine form and the songs have an extra level of detail, but the long list of guest musicians is gone. The band Matt put together to promote his last full length, "Births, Deaths & Marriages" (2010), is still with him, and he was inspired to build this album around them. Throughout 2013, Matt was presenting unfinished songs to Josh Norton (Guitar), Fern Sanchez (Drums), Grant Fitzpatrick (Bass), Tim Walker (Pedal Steel) and his wife Vavine (Vocals). The group would jam on songs over multiple sessions, letting arrangements and feel develop naturally, the same approach the band took to the recording sessions. A double A-Side single, "On The Horizon/Thank You Los Angeles" was released in late August. Since the release, the band has been promoting the new songs with a launch at The Del Monte speakeasy, a slot on the Abbot Kinney Fest and The Desert Stars Festival at Pappy & Harriets. Real Good Time presents charming singer Deadra Aziza. Really, Deadra deserves more merits. A good start was her contribution on Matt's album Groovosphere. The easy going We Gonna' Make It is a perfect good-morning-sunshine-song. Benjie Porecki supports with precise key strokes Matt's guitar riffs. Benjie is in recent times preparing the release of his new album. The title says it all, Funkology is a tutorial about Funk in particular and good music in general. Get To Know U is featuring singer and bass player Kenny Harris, who wrote the song as well. Kenny was also guest musician on Matt's album This Time Around. Long Island is Matt's homage to his native soil. Matt comments: "Just 1.5 hours outside of the capital of the world (NYC), there are beautiful fields, farms, a taste of the past, and a blossoming vineyard scene producing some amazing wines." On April 1, 2011, Marshak returns with his freshest and cohesive work to date with Urban Folktales (Nuance Music Group). It's his sixth major release and bound to be on Top 10 lists. "It's my first theme record, one that sticks to the same vibe from top to bottom," says Marshak. "I really wanted to capture the essence of the late-night city sound, an intangible vibe I've always been drawn to." Marshak is known for his lively, fun and energetic live shows, and it's on stage where he drew the inspiration for Urban Folktales. He'd recently noticed that fans enthusiastically responded to the tune "Seduction" from his 2009 CD Family Funktion (Nuance Music Group). "It has a combination of neo- soul, R&B, jazz and funk," he says. "People always ask about 'Seduction' after we play it. They told me they really like the open-ended, airy sound that's at its essence." With the positive feedback fresh in his mind, Marshak decided to craft an unforgettable CD of the style of music he knew his fans would love-as well as new listeners. The 13 original songs on Urban Folktales, from "Next to You," "A Silent Knowing," "Harlem River" and others, certainly capture the "Seduction" vibe, making for a stunning work and cohesive whole, a welcome change from today's single-song-download mentality. Of course, Marshak's guitar work-sometimes refined, sometimes gritty, always compelling and listenable-is what Marshak's sound has always been about. But on Urban Folktales, his guitar often yields to the overall sonic palette. In fact, on several excursions, Marshak dials down his chord changes, allowing the emphasis of dynamics and emotions to carry the listening experience instead of overwhelming it with musical information. Being one of the finest guitarists in the contemporary jazz genre means that Marshak also digs experimenting with his guitar sounds. "The straight hollow- body jazz guitar sound to me is everywhere today," he says, "so I really wanted to experiment and have the guitar leads to be a bit different and fresh." Specifically? Well, you've no doubt heard plenty of contemporary jazz songs that use the cool wah-wah guitar pedal sound as a rhythm accompaniment. Marshak decided to turn that on its head. Let's Put Out The Lights Songwriter, pianist, and singer Matt Dennis composed hit pop songs for Tommy Dorsey's band and Frank Sinatra during the 1940s and 1950s. Born into a vaudeville family in Seattle in 1914, Dennis learned how to play the piano at a young age, leading to a job with Horace Heidt while Dennis was still in his teens. He eventually moved to Hollywood, where he worked in clubs accompanying singers such as Martha Tilton, Merry Macs, and the Pied Pipers. Dennis was still with the Pipers when they joined up with Tommy Dorsey, and served as arranger, composer, and coach for Dorsey. During his service in WWII, Dennis did radio work and arranged music for Glenn Miller's AAF Orchestra, among others. Dennis' chief collaborator was lyricist Tom Adair, and his best-known tunes include "Will You Still Be Mine?," "Let's Get Away from It All," "Everything Happens to Me" (1941), and "Angel Eyes" (1953), but he also penned "We Belong Together," "We've Reached the Point of No Return," and "You Can Believe Me." Dennis also did a series of recordings for the Glendale, RCA, Jubilee, and Kapp labels.
