Ware Archive Series, and the first release of the saxophone master in rare duo performance with fellow master of music, pianist Matthew Shipp. Though sharing 17 years together in the legendary David S. Ware Quartet (along with bassist William Parker and a series of drummers), Shipp recalls that he and Ware performed duo concerts perhaps six times at most in that period. Thankfully, on this latter-day occasion, their work together in this form was professionally recorded. This concert is one continuous long-form improvisation; it spans an incredibly wide range of approaches and dynamics. The ecstatic deep listening experience of free jazz performed at a highest level avails itself here in full. Their delighfully pithy trading fours encore to the concert is also included. Obviously the very deep levels of communion which were developed within the context of Ware s Quartet inform this work. In equal evidence is each of them embracing the leaderless duo context, challenging and expanding their mutual language throughout. Following David s untimely passing in October 2012 on the eve of his 63rd birthday, it was understood necessary to continue releasing singular works of great magnitude in order to further radiate his distinctly potent sound and vision. David S. Ware s work was a foundational inspiration for the AUM Fidelity label, and its mission continues strong with this essential DSW-ARC series. (6:02) Hardcore blues fans might have noticed harpist Matthew Skoller's name in the backup band credits for artists such as Koko Taylor, Bernard Allison, Larry Garner, and John Primer, but unless you're a resident of Chicago, it's unlikely his work is familiar to you. Weekly gigs in the Windy City have sharpened Skoller's edge, and on his third indie album These Kind of Blues! he proves what blues musicians have known for years: he's ready for the major leagues. Like Charlie Musselwhite, he's pushing the blues borders, even into rap on the G. Love-styled remix of "Handful of People," a song available in two versions. There are echoes of Paul Butterfield's thick, gutsy, amplified sound in Skoller's tone, as well as masters like James Cotton and Little Walter. His songs also traffic in edgier areas than those more closely associated with the blues, as with the politically charged "Handful of People," and the philosophical musings of "Let the World Come to You." The latter track is enhanced by soulful backing vocals and even Brian Ritchie's shakuhachi, not a typical blues instrument. The link to Chicago's fertile harp masters is emphasized by the appearance of guitarist Lurrie Bell, the son of legendary harmonica player Carey Bell. Skoller's vocals are husky and assured, bending around the lyrics and his rugged harp attack. Unlike many bandleaders, Skoller never overdoes his solos, bursting into songs with confidence and pulling out before the listener has fully absorbed his monstrous sound. In fact, there are times when you wish he would further emphasize his intense playing. A grinding, melancholy cover of James Cotton's "Down at Your Buryin'," one of only three covers, is a showstopping album high point, revealing his band's restraint, a terrific slow burn lead from Bell, and Skoller's masterful touch. His mature harmonica playing led a number of musicians to take him into their bands; Deitra Farr, Big Time Sarah, Jimmy Rogers, Big Daddy Kinsey, John Primer, Bernard Allison, H-Bomb Ferguson and Larry Garner. In 1992 Skoller started his own band. This cd is a killer, full of keen observations, driving rhythms, desperate textures and coutionary messages. Skoller has a free flow of expression that comes from maturity, expierence and hard work. He tells his own story. A high-school baseball star, he'd originally hoped to attend college on a sports scholarship; instead, West accepted a four-year music scholarship from Millikin University, where he wound up recording several solo albums before graduating in 1999. On the strength of the spiritual pop songs that appeared on September Sun (1997), Every Step of the Way (1998), and Sellout (2002), he began landing work as a songwriter for hire. West also drew interest from Universal South Records, who signed the artist and released his major-label debut, the Dove Award-winning Happy, in 2003. History followed in 2005, and West supported the album's release with the first headlining tour of his career. Excessive use of his voice led to severe medical problems, though, forcing West to undergo throat surgery in 2007 to remove multiple polyps. Following a period of vocal rest, he returned in 2008 with Something to Say. The album's lead single, "You Are Everything," became the most-played song on Christian radio in 2008, and West -- now fully healed and singing comfortably -- quickly returned to the studio to record 2010's The Story of Your Life, which also charted well. Wide River To Cross (4:03) I was born in Oklahoma, a son of a mechanic / country singer and school teacher. My father's band traveled throughout Oklahoma, Texas, and Louisiana during the sweeping urban cowboy times of the 70's and 80's. In 2001 I moved to Nashville to write songs for a living, after some hard broke years I landed a job writing for Tom Collins who published and produced alot of acts from Ronnie Milsap to Steve Wariner. I didn't land any big cuts there but learned the art of writing from a true "old school" hard nosed mentor. I shortly thereafter started a band with my brother and a few other friends, THE DIRT DRIFTERS, we travelled the old school way from honky-tonk to honky-tonk for some years and landed a home at Warner Brothers to cut a record. It was right on the cusp of the internet buggering into business models of record labels and looking back the contracts they make you sign are highway robbery. Not long after I signed with EMI publishing as a songwriter and honed my craft even more. My favorites have always been the ones who did things their way, and even more the ones who looked at a song like a painting to give to the world. During this time we toured with the likes of Dierks Bentley, Eric Church, Jason Aldean, Lynrd Skynrd, etc. We got to record a song with Willie Nelson, play the Opry, Buck's Crystal Palace and every dive that would have us from coast to coast. I love the people in the places throughout this Great Divide, they all have a story to tell and I love hearing them. What a land... We eventually cut a record thru a couple regime changes and corporate musical chairs events, and came out with a hell of a album, THIS IS MY BLOOD. We got a few singles that charted, but during that time the Nashville sound was changing to more of an electronic party sound mixed with lacking lyrics. I did end up getting some songs recorded by artists like Dierks Bentley, Chris Stapleton, Casey Donahue Band, Willie Nelson, Dean Brody to name a few. But something still wasn't right. Resting on my core I eventually came to the realization that there were a lot of folks with their hands in my pockets that didn't belong there, and the song that I wanted to sing just wouldn't be heard on mainstream threads, nor was the current paradigm a healthy world to be in to reach who wanted to be as a man. So I packed up my guitar and my family and moved to the hill country of Texas. I come from a long line of pioneers, and the dream of living off the land has been just as strong as my love of the craft of songwriting. So here I am, on a seven acre homestead with my amazing family and all that entails. I love the song that the land sings when you walk with it in the art of regeneration. If you're not familiar with Matthew Skoller, absorb these credentials. As a producer, he has produced two award-winning albums by Lurrie Bell and figures prominently in Bell's recent release, Can't Shake This Feeling. His tune "The Devil Ain't Got No Music," from Bell's gospel album of the same name, received a BMA nomination as "Song of the Year." He does a version of it here too. Skoller has also played harmonica on three Grammy nominated albums in the last five years: Chicago Blues: A Living History, Still I Rise, by Heritage Blues Orchestra, and Muddy Waters 100. So, respected both by critics and fellow musicians in Chicago, the relocated New Yorker is back with his knack for rather offbeat blues material, revealing a cool mix of both humor and a keen grasp of topical social issues. Of the eleven tunes, nine were written by Skoller and his co-producer, Vincent Bucher. The title track is autobiographical, punctuated by that clever line, ".I need a green card to play the blues." The opener, "Big Box Store Blues," is a tribute and rewriting of John Lee 'Sonny Boy' Williamson's "Welfare Store Blues," lamenting the loss of mom and pop stores and the often deplorable life of the retail worker. "Only in the Blues" talks about the Blues music industry with a dry sense of humor, while "Story of Greed" is his own interesting take on the 1% syndrome. Yes, there are the requisite love and lost love songs too. The slow simmering "Tear Collector" with its burning chorus "I need someone to cry for me tonight" and the shuffling "747," with its lines "She caught a 747/Greyhound runs too slow/Ain't no tracks up in the air/I wonder where did my baby go," are especially memorable. As you might expect, Skoller assembled some of the city's top musicians for this recording including Johnny Iguana on keyboards, Felton Crews on bass, Marc Wilson on drums and stellar guitarists Giles Corey and Eddie Taylor Jr. (son of legend Eddie Taylor). Guitarist Carlos Johnson plays on "Tear Collector" and "747." Background vocalists Mike Avery and Stevie Robinson join in. Given that Skoller relocated to Chicago almost 30 years ago, it is clear that is deeply entrenched and well-versed in the Chicago blues sound. What separates him from many are his thoughtful songs that reflect a social conscience without a preachy approach. The 3rd Sound [00:06:08] Drummer Bobby Kapp, free jazz spirit in New York in the mi-sixties, relocated to Mexico City, to the Artists' colony San Miguel de Allede. But he gets around, and on a return to New York he joined pianist Matthew Shipp to record a terrific set of duo improvisations called Cactus. Shipp, the better-known half of the team, plays with a vehemence that parallels his public persona-a prickly, chip-on-the-shoulder, in-your-face approach, a sort of Randy Weston meets Cecil Taylor to and rub elbows with Bud Powell-if Powell had played with serious attitude. Kapp, for his part, rumbles and rolls, he whispers and shuffles. He rat-ta-tats to make you break into a dance step, and sometimes he stomps, and he may be the most simpatico band mate Shipp has ever worked with. Shipp is prolific. His Wikipedia page list five releases in 2015, and they probably missed a couple. Kapp has available recordings with his Fine Wine Trio, a collaboration with free jazz saxophonist Noah Howard, and his 2015 offering, Cilia Sin Embargo (Self Produced). Cactus opens with the eight and half minute "Overture," a frenetic improvisation full of angles, and a momentum that waxes and wanes. Shipp leaves more space than he normally does. He seems to search, discover, then explore new tangents. His normal percussive approach is leaner, crisper, as Kapp lays down a tight weave of textures. "Before" sounds composed. Shipp's left hands plays walking bass to Kapp's bright cymbal splashes. Kapp-like Billy Mintz and the late Paul Motian-is a rare drum kit poet. His melodic intro to "Money" is a divinely masterful ninety seconds, leading into Shipp's discombobulation of notes that gels into a compelling, light-stepping beauty. Everything meshed on this set.
