Maugham S. - The Trembling of a Leaf Unabridged AudioBook | 2013 | Genre: General Fiction | English | ISBN-13: 978-1420938289 | MP3 96Kb | Length: 8 hrs and 22 mins | 345.66 MB After working in British Intelligence during World War I, William Somerset Maugham set off to regain his health by traveling to Asia, Mexico, and the Pacific Islands. During this trip he gather materials and wrote the stories that appeared in 1921 in The Trembling of a Leaf. The six short stories and two "sketches" include the famous story "Rain"-adapted for both theater and film as Sadie Thompson-a story about the ironic consequences of obsession. Its less known companions, however, have their own merits. "Macintosh" is a taut psychological study of two officials on a remote tropic island. "The Fall of Edward Barnard" is a brief bildungsroman about what is important in life-a pre-cursor of Maugham's well known novel, The Razor's Edge. Of course love is always a subject of the tropics and Maugham's deft, ironic handling of the theme in "Red" and "Honolulu" is masterful. But it is "The Pool" that tells a poignant and tragic tale about the pitfalls for love across cultures. "I have never pretended to be anything but a story teller," Maugham once wrote. These short stories are some of his best, and among the best ever written about the exotic South Seas. I. The Pacific - -missing II. Mackintosh III. The Fall of Edward Barnard IV. Red V. The Pool VI. Maugham S. - Ashenden: Or the British Agentn Unabridged AudioBook | 2013 | Genre: General Fiction | English | ISBN-13: 9780099289708 | MP3 96Kb | Length: 9 hrs and 31 mins | 393.94 MB When war broke out in 1914, Somerset Maugham was dispatched by the British Secret Service to Switzerland under the guise of completing a play. Multilingual, knowledgeable about many European countries and a celebrated writer, Maugham had the perfect cover, and the assignment appealed to his love of romance, and of the ridiculous. The stories collected in Ashenden are rooted in Maugham's own experiences as an agent, reflecting the ruthlessness and brutality of espionage, its intrigue and treachery, as well as its absurdity. Maugham S. - First Person Singular Unabridged AudioBook | 2013 | Genre: General Fiction | English | ISBN-13: 978-0405078545 | MP3 96Kb | Length: 8 hrs and 12 mins | 354.01 MB "Life is really very fantastic, and one has to have a peculiar sense of humour to see the fun of it." This very short quote from the not so short story Virtue is simply the best way to start my little essay on "Six Stories Written in the First Person Singular", Somerset Maugham's fourth mature collection of short stories and the second - after the previous one, "Ashenden" (1928) - which is not concerned with tropical locales and the fates of British Empire builders. But the main theme is the same as in all other of Maugham's short stories, as in his whole oeuvre indeed - the human nature pure and simple (although it is neither actually). I remember quite well the first time I read something by Somerset Maugham. It was the short story "Virtue". Don't ask me when this happened, it was many years ago. I was having my lunch in a little club near the Faculty where I had the pleasure to study just then. While eating the relatively tasteless Schnitzel (and the utterly tasteless mashed potatoes) I went through the table of contents of the Maugham's volume I had just bought and having liked the title of "Virtue", I read it chewing thoughtfully. W. Somerset Maugham - Ah King Unabridged AudioBook | 2013 | Genre: General Fiction | English | ISBN-13: N/A | MP3 96Kb | Length: 8 hrs and 30 mins | 383.49 MB This is Somerset Maugham's fifth mature short story collection and, as he states in the preface to The Collected Edition in 1936, the last one which contains stories popularly known as "exotic". Originally published in 1933 by Heinemann, "Ah King" is another achievement of Maugham in the genre of the short story that leaves me breathless while reading it. All six stories it contains are perfect examples of exquisite craftsmanship, at least four of them are true masterpieces (and the last two are quite close to perfection even if not as affecting as the other four). They all were published in magazines save "The Book-Bag"; "Footprints in the Jungle" as early as 1927 and all others in 1931, except "Neil Macadam" which appeared on the magazine pages in 1932. Interestingly, the last two stories had different names in magazine form, "The Temptation of Neil Macadam" and "The Right Thing is the Kind Thing" respectively. As almost all such changed titles, the ones that appear in the book are distinctly better. W. Somerset Maugham - Cosmopolitans Unabridged AudioBook | 2013 | Genre: General Fiction | English | ISBN-13: 9780405078521 | MP3 96Kb | Length: 8 hrs and 30 mins | 278.75 MB The name of the collection comes, of course, from the famous magazine Cosmopolitan in which all these short stories save one appeared between 1923 and 1929. Indeed, they were written on a commission from that magazine whose editor, Ray Long, happened to read Maugham's travel book On A Chinese Screen (1922) and thinking that some of the 58 short sketches included in it might well serve as short stories commissioned a dozen or so new ones to Maugham. Later most of these very short stories were revised a great deal, acquired new titles and were published in a single volume by Doubleday in 1936. To this book Maugham wrote one of his most charming prefaces, extremely amusing to read and containing a lot of serious thoughts about the art of fiction. He states that the stories for Cosmopolitan were to be short enough to be printed on two opposite pages of the magazine and leave enough space for an illustration. W. Somerset Maugham - Creatures Of Circumstance Unabridged AudioBook | 1967 | Genre: General Fiction | English | ISBN-13: 9780405078538 | MP3 96Kb | 483.34 MB Creatures of Circumstancebegins with an explanation from the author telling how this collection came about. He states that he "has never pretended to be anything but a story teller. It has amused me to tell stories and I have told a great many. It is a misfortune for me that the telling of a story just for the sake of the story is not an activity that is in favor with the intelligentsia. I endeavor to bear my misfortunes with fortitude." The short stories in this extraordinary collection-with the exception of one-were written after the close of World War I. Maugham shrewdly and brilliantly exploited the public taste of his time to put on display the changing morality of the twentieth century. An expert storyteller, he was also a master of fictional technique. His fiction offers a synthesis of pleasures in the form of realism, exoticism, shrewd and ironic observation, careful craftsmanship, and characteriation. Among the stories included in Creatures of Circumstance are "The Colonel's Lady," "Flotsam and Jetsam," "Sanatorium," "Appearance and Reality," "The Point of Honor," "A Woman of Fifty," "The Man from Glasgow," and "The Kite." W. Somerset Maugham (1874-1965) was an English novelist and playwright. Maugham was famous as a dramatist before he was known for his novels and short stories. His clarity of style, the perfection of his form, the subtlety of his thought, veiled thinly behind a worldly cynicism made him an international figure. Among his novels are Of Human Bondage, The Moon and Sixpence, and The Raor's Edge.
