One of JJ's best from the late 50s - a tightly crackling hardbop set, recorded very much in the manner of his classic JJ Inc album! The sound here is a bit more compact overall - with some shorter tracks that really allow Johnson to display his keen sense of economy on his horn, while working in a burning mode that recalls some of his best bop sides from the early years - particularly his work on Blue Note. Bobby Jaspar's in the frontline with JJ - playing both tenor and flute - and rhythm is from a trio that features Tommy Flanagan on piano, Wilbur Little on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums. Jones' touch on the kit gives the album a nicely dancing feel throughout - and is a real reminder of his simple genius in an early setting like this. The Mabe A tenor saxophonist with an expressive sound rooted in Jazz tradition, a label owner tirelessly documenting unsung Jazz heroes, one of Canada's most important Jazz impresarios, the hardest-working man in Jazz business - Cory Weeds is all of these things, and much more. Weeds may be best known as the founder and owner of Cory Weeds' Cellar Jazz Club in Vancouver, which he successfully ran for more than 13 years. Weeds built the Cellar to become one of North America's best Jazz clubs, where masters such as George Coleman, Jeff Hamilton, Louis Hayes, David "Fathead" Newman, Dr. Lonnie Smith, and the finest Jazz musicians from Vancouver and across Canada performed before it closed in February 2014. But he wasn't just the club owner. As a saxophonist who studied at the University of North Texas and Capilano College, Weeds spent many nights on the Cellar bandstand as a leader and sideman. He held his own when performing with icons like Joey DeFrancesco and Christian McBride. In addition to playing on numerous sessions, Weeds has also served as producer on more than 80 recordings. On the presentation front, Weeds is employed full-time by Coastal Jazz & Blues (the producers of the annual TD International Jazz Festival) where he serves as Programming Manager for Clubs & Special Projects. Four Funky Folk Music in general, jazz in particular, and notably baritone saxophonist Pepper Adams all had a breakthrough year in 1957. Given his New Star award in Down Beat magazine's critics poll and much acclaim working with the Stan Kenton Orchestra, Adams left Detroit that year for important recording sessions on both the East and West Coasts. Teamed here with musicians based in the Los Angeles area, Adams proved as adept at hard bop as with the cool school sound the California jazzmen had established. Two dates from the summer of 1957 (Pepper Adams Quintet for the Mode label and Critics' Choice from Pacific Jazz) feature drummer Mel Lewis on all the cuts, with help from pianists Carl Perkins or Jimmy Rowles, Kenton trumpeters Stu Williamson or Lee Katzman, bassist Leroy Vinnegar, and on the second assemblage fellow Detroiter bassist Doug Watkins. The result is a solid collection of standards and compositions from emerging Motor City jazzmen Tommy Flanagan, Barry Harris, Thad Jones, and Adams. The distinguished sound of the baritone makes for an intriguing partnership alongside the brass of Williamson or Katzman. Five tracks with the Perkins/Williamson combine produced the calypso to hard bop "Muezzin'," with a singing trumpet followed by baritone, and "Freddie Froo," a hard bopper based on the same batting order, both originals by the leader. A spry version of the usually mundane "Unforgettable," a frantic, wow factor-saturated take of "Baubles, Bangles and Beads," and the tender, deep, and mellow "My One and Only Love" round out the first session. Katzman plays very well, trumping his relatively little-known status on three of the next eight tracks. He's excellent taking the lead on Flanagan's now legendary "Minor Mishap," adds to the breezy cool of "High Step" from the pen of Harris, and assists the band in bright, inventive, and adroit 4/4 to 3/4 time changes during the Thad Jones number "5021." Rowles in particular consistently stands out for his inserted solo segments on "5021," and manhandles the other Thad Jones contribution, a furious flyer titled "Zec," in a way original boppers Charlie Parker and Miles Davis would be envious of. His piano leads are simply elegant and refined on two more originals written by Adams: on the bluesy "Four Funky Folk" (originally on the World Pacific LP Blowin' the Blues) and especially during his feature on "Blackout Blues." Of course, Mel Lewis is the consummate professional with every swinging note. But the star here is Adams, emerging with brimming confidence and a solid concept beyond his peers and influences, and exhibiting a style that perfectly reflects his highly intelligent, dry, quick-witted, and fluid personality. For fans and students of the big horn, this is a homework project, and a testament to one of the greatest players of all time on his instrument. In fact, this is the perfect sort of album for those diggers looking for that perfect jazz-funk record, the one that slipped away; the drumming across all of the tracks is hypnotic but changes enough to retain that mysticism, the pianos glide over the melodies in a delicate but playful way, and Farrar's vocals are an utter beauty spilled all over the rhythm. Habibs Habit (4:38) Here's a twist for you -- a Finnish band playing newly composed soul-jazz and post-bop music. The Five Corners ensemble is clearly influenced by the Horace Silver/Lee Morgan/Art Blakey strain of '60s jazz, and even uses recording techniques that are reminiscent of the reel-to-reel two-track era. Saxophonist Timo Lassy and trumpeter Jukka Eskola front this well-heeled jazz band that harkens back to better times for the music, and feels good doing it without resorting to funk or dance music. Lassy proves his versatility in stepping away from his John Coltrane influenced side going more for a Hank Mobley/Joe Henderson approach He's especially good playing flute during the excellent "Habib's Habit," a hip modal piece that swings hard, and fully showcases the considerable gifts of pianist Mikael Jakobsson. "Hot Rod" is a spy swing jazz with a basic melody, while "Midnight in Trieste" also sounds like soundtrack music with Lassy's tenor sax, the vibraphone work of guests Arttu Takalo, and Pekka Jaclin on tympani. Most of the material goes beyond the advertised five-piece combo, several cuts feature a string section -- fairly unobtrusive -- and the veteran vocalist Mark Murphy appears on two tracks. He sings "Kerouac Days in Montana," bringing out the '60s cruising California cool factor, while an Oliver Nelson derived "Come & Get Me" combines an orchestral approach blended in with rhythm & blues. Unfortunately, the balance between words and instruments tends to favor the music and not the singers, especially on Okou's feature "Rich in Time," where the strings and horns half-bury his thin vocals. Not only does the music have a retro feel, the production values overall reflect this, a bit muddled and murky, not sounding up to date or digital at all. The lineup features some wonderful work on Fender Rhodes from George Duke - who brings a more soulful, spiritual current to the proceedings than Joe Zawinul did in earlier years - a really commanding presence that hints at his brewing solo fame, and which is a very welcome addition to the core lineup, which also includes Cannon on soprano and alto, and brother Nat on cornet! The performance also fetaures some great guest work from Ernie Watts on tenor and Airto on percussion - who really help round out the long tunes on the set. David Axelrod produced - leaving some nice room for Adderley's key spoken bits - and titles include the 12 minute groover "The Brakes", plus "Oh Babe", "Music You All", and "Capricorn" - plus a sweet take on "Walk Tall", which really has Duke stomping away on the Rhodes!
