I'll See You In My Dreams 4:14 Later in Ingrid Michaelson's career, she started using acoustic guitars and ukuleles to help her short burst into mainstream popularity. Her music was mainly composed of upbeat, acoustic diddies, with deeper meanings than many people realized. But this CD isn't from Ingrid's future career. This is "Slow the Rain", Ingrid's very first album. And what an album it is. You can spot the main difference in this album from the rest of Ingrid's discography just by listening to the first five seconds of each song. What you'll hear is piano at the beginning of almost every song, and if you continue to listen on, you'll find the whole song is piano driven. There are barely any guitars to be fund on this album. It's just driven along by Ingrid's voice and piano playing with bass and a simple percussion section. And those simplistic instruments make quite the beautiful noise. Many of the songs seem as if Ingrid is just improvising as she plays the piano. She'll play a little bit, get quiet, take a pause, and then you get another burst of piano. This is especially evident on album highlight "Porcelain Fists." This is one of the most simplistic, yet hauntingly beautiful, tracks on the CD. It starts out with Ingrid on the piano, then a quiet string section comes in and a man softly humming in the background. Finally, Ingrid comes in with powerful lyrics, such as the chorus: "Take my hand, you're treading water/I feel I am slipping away from underneath my toes/Nobody knows Where is it she goes?" That is one of the other things that makes this album a hidden gem. The lyrics are simply superb. The song "Charlie" is about Charlie Brown, but she takes instances from the popular comic strip and is able to craft a story that makes you think of the rejected child that you may have known in school. She's able to make an entire story out of a 4 minute song. It is quite a skill to be able to do that at the tender age of 26. "Mosquito", however, is able to craft that story in order to make the highlight of the album. Ingrid sings about a man that she actually loved, while that man only wanted to use her. As she sings "Are you Poison?" over and over at the end of the song, she sounds so genuinely heartbroken, that it seems as she's a close friend telling you about her problems. The instrumentation is also at a high point at this song. There's the piano as always, but it's accompanied by various background sounds. There's the sound of a mosquito buzzing, the vocals overlapping each other, and an effect that just adds eeriness to the end of the song. The closing track, "I'll See You In My Dreams", is the perfect ending to a near perfect album. It's more reminiscent of Ingrid's later albums, with just a ukulele accompanying Ingrid and another man singing with an effect that makes their voices sound like it's coming out of an old time radio. It's just such a happy, simplistic song that it raises your hopes for the future after a somber album. It also tells the story of Ingrid's life, simple, yet sweet. The Lord's Prayer (5:10) Marcus Miller is foremost known as a Grammy-winning bass player, but as he proves on Silver Rain, Miller is equally formidable as an arranger. Taking songs from a disparate mix of artists that includes Stevie Wonder, Duke Ellington, Jimi Hendrix, Edgar Winter, Beethoven and Prince, Miller's skills are in almost embarrassing abundance here. On Edgar Winter's 70s rock jam "Frankenstein", his band (including the likes of Kirk Whalum on tenor and Kenny Garret on alto) flat out wails, but Miller's slapping bass keeps the groove completely locked down. In contrast, his take on Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" sets the stage for Miller's mellow-groove skills while the cover of Stevie Wonder's "Boogie On Reggae a Woman" is Miller at his intricate, funky best. On Prince's "Girls & Boys", Macy Gray adds her swooping, sensual vocals while Eric Clapton sits in on the title track. Clocking in at around 75 minutes, this CD is full to bursting, but what's striking here is not the quantity, but the quality. Miller is able to effortlessly make this material his own; moreover he is able to take an impossibly diverse set of songs and construct an album with real cohesion and flow. There is a lot happening on this album, as multi-instrumentalist Miller swaps instruments, moods and musicians from tune to tune, to his credit, however, he never loses the trail. Born Richelle Renee Wright in Kansas City in 1970, she grew up in the small town of Wellsville, KS, and fell in love with country music before she'd even started school. She took piano lessons starting at age four and began singing in groups at 11, also playing trumpet in her school band. At 14 she started performing in local clubs with a backing band called County Line, which featured her father on bass. The summer after her junior year of high school she performed in the long-running Ozark Jubilee show, and as a senior she successfully auditioned for a job impersonating female country stars at Nashville's Opryland theme park. She moved there permanently in 1989 and spent the next three years working at Opryland and an assortment of day jobs. Eventually, she landed a publishing deal on the strength of her songwriting, and a record contract with Mercury/Polydor followed. Wright's debut album, Woman in the Moon, was released in 1994 and attracted positive notice from some critics and the country music community, earning her a Top New Female Vocalist award from the ACM. Unfortunately, neither it nor its follow-up, 1996's Right in the Middle of It, sold very well. Wright asked for her release from Polydor and moved over to MCA, where she had the opportunity to work with the commercially savvy producer Tony Brown. Though it wasn't a smash, Wright's 1997 label debut, Let Me In, did make the country Top 40 and gave the singer her first Top 20 hit in "Shut Up and Drive." Moreover, her constant touring was paying off in the form of a growing fan base, setting the stage for her breakthrough with 1999's Single White Female. The album's title track became Wright's first number one hit, and the following year she and Brad Paisley performed a duet on their co-composition "Hard to Be a Husband, Hard to Be a Wife." Her next album, Never Love You Enough, became her first to break the country Top Ten, and she reached the Top 30 with the title track and "Jezebel." In 2004, after leaving MCA, she released Everything, a collection of leftover session material not included on her previous releases, on her own Painted Red imprint. In 2005 Wright moved over to Dualtone for The Metropolitan Hotel. After a long tour, Wright took an extended break from recording, and finally re-emerged in 2010 with Lifted Off the Ground on Vanguard, as well as the written memoir Like Me: Confessions of a Heartland Country Singer from Random House.
