Fog Edagh? n (Ghost Track) - Tinariwen Tinariwen is a Tuareg group that performs a guitar-centric branch of Malian music that, to the untrained ear, is reminiscent of Ali Farka Tour??'s, but is far more rock-oriented and percussive. All of the band's musicians originate from the southern Sahara; the group's name, meaning "empty places," is a reflection of their land of origin. The band formed in the rebel camps of Colonel Gaddafi, as each of the musicians had been forced from their nomadic lifestyle into involuntary military service. Surrounded by a displaced nation of their peers, Tinariwen forged a new style of music, trading their traditional lutes and shepherd's flutes for electric guitars and drums. The style that resulted was dubbed "Tishoumaren," or "the music of the unemployed." Their music addresses issues such as political awakening, problems of exile, repression of their people, and demands of sovereignty. In a region with no postal or telephone system, their tapes soon became a grassroots voice of rebellion and a rallying point for the disenfranchised nation. Though outlawed in Algeria and Mali, 2001's The Radio Tisdas Sessions and 2004's Amassakoul are available to Western audiences. In 2006, they recorded their third album, Aman Iman: Water Is Life, released internationally in 2007 by Harmonia Mundi's World Village imprint. The album was produced by Justin Adams, and featured the voice and guitar of founding member Mohammed Ag Itlale. Tinariwen toured the world for the first time in its wake. They followed the album with Imidiwan: Companions, a two-disc set containing one disc of music and a DVD documentary about Tinariwen's history. This was once again followed by a world tour that included numerous festival appearances in the United States and Europe. Tinariwen signed to America's Anti imprint in 2010. The label encouraged them to experiment. The end result was Tassili, issued in 2011, in which the band recorded a completely acoustic set in a protected region of the southeastern Algerian desert. The tapes were flown to America where guitarist Nels Cline overdubbed electric guitars and New Orleans' famed Dirty Dozen Brass Band added horns, making Tassili a truly international collaboration. The album won a Grammy. The bandmembers were forced to flee Mali due to political and social unrest, and recorded their follow-up, Emmaar, at a studio in Joshua Tree National Park in the United States. It was released in February of 2014. Allegro assai Pianist Simone Dinnerstein is one of the fastest rising classical performers of the early 21st century, with a flourishing international career as a soloist and a number of popular and award-winning recordings to her credit. Although her repertoire is broad, ranging from the Baroque to contemporary premieres, she has gained a reputation as a musician with a special affinity of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach. Born in New York City, she studied at the Manhattan School of Music, graduated from the Juilliard School, where she was a student of Peter Serkin, and was a fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center. Her breakthrough came with her 2005 New York debut at Carnegie Hall debut, where she played Bach's Goldberg Variations. Her 2007 recording of the piece on the Telarc label went to the top of the U.S. Billboard Classical Chart in the first week of its commercial release. It received numerous critical accolades including a Diapason d'Or Award and a place on many prestigious "Best of the Year" lists. Her second recording, of a live 2007 recital in Berlin featuring works by J.S. Bach, Beethoven, and American composer Philip Lasser, was released in 2008 and also shot to the number one spot on the U.S. Billboard Classical Chart in its first week. Her third recording, Bach: A Strange Beauty, was released on Sony Classical in 2011; it not only topped the classical chart, but became one of the top sellers of the year in any genre. A follow-up appeared one year later, Something Almost Being Said: Music of Bach and Schubert. Early in 2013, Dinnerstein collaborated with singer/songwriter Tift Merrit on a song cycle titled Night. Allegro con brio While their name derives from Schubert's song Der Wanderer, D. 493, and their sympathies lie with German Romanticism in general, the Trio Wanderer has performed a broad range of works lying outside the Germanic sphere, including compositions by Smetana, Dvor??k, Saint-Sa??ns, Debussy, Bart??k, Martinu, Copland, Messiaen, and many others, including contemporary composers. Of course, this popular piano trio has lived up to the spirit of its name, too, with regular performance of works by Beethoven, Hummel, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Brahms, and other German Romantics, not to mention those who augured Romanticism like Haydn and Mozart. What is unusual about the group is it is French, not German, and it performs music with a keen sense for its idiom, whether German, French, Czech, American, or whatever. The Trio Wanderer has performed at the world's most prestigious venues, from Milan's Teatro alla Scala and London's Wigmore Hall to Washington's Library of Congress and Tokyo's Kioi Hall. It has made recordings for a variety of labels, including Sony Classical, Harmonia Mundi, Chant du Monde Capriccio, and others. The Trio Wanderer was formed at the Paris Conservatoire National Sup??rieur de Musique in 1987. The members of the Trio were students there: Vincent Coq (piano), Jean-Marc Phillips-Varjab??dian (violin), and Rapha??l Pidoux (cello). Though each had already received advanced training, its most important studies in chamber music came in the years 1987-1991 under Jean-Claude Pennetier, Janos Starker, and Menahem Pressler. In 1988 the Trio Wanderer won the Munich-based ARD Competition and two years later captured first prize at the Fischoff Chamber Music Competition in the U.S. It quickly gained an international reputation and began touring across Europe, Asia, and the Americas. Probably its most important early recordings were the Mendelssohn trios (1995) and the Dvor??k and Smetana trios (1996), both issued on Sony Classical. The group began recording for Harmonia Mundi in 1999 and thereafter turned out CDs of the Beethoven Triple Concerto; trios by Brahms, Mendelssohn, and Saint-Sa??ns; and many more. In August 2002 the Trio Wanderer debuted at the Salzburg Festival to critical acclaim, and returned there in 2004 and 2006. The group regularly appeared on European television during this period, including in a film about it made by ARTE that was broadcast on French and German television in June 2003. An advocate of contemporary music, he has also performed Beethoven and Schumann with the period-instrument ensemble Concerto K??ln, recorded music inspired by Indian classical composer-performer Ravi Shankar, and partnered with actor Klaus Maria Brandauer in conceptual projects involving music and the spoken word. Hope went on to study with several Russian instructors at the Royal College of Music, then traveled to Hamburg to study from 1992 to 1998 with another Russian, Zakhar Bron. As a student in Hamburg, Hope developed a friendship with composer Alfred Schnittke (in 2003 he was entrusted with the premiere of the composer's recently discovered violin sonata from 1955), and would soon devote himself largely though never exclusively to the music of Schnittke and other living composers. He has commissioned works from the likes of Jan M??ller-Wieland, Huw Watkins, and Roxanna Panufnik. Hope's career began to take off in his mid-twenties, and in 2002 he was recruited on one week's notice to perform on tour with the Beaux Arts Trio. Almost immediately he was accepted as a permanent member of the ensemble and worked to spice up the group's fairly conservative repertoire with commissioned works by such composers as Gy??rgy Kurt??g and Mark-Anthony Turnage to celebrate the trio's 50th anniversary. Hope continued to perform and record as a soloist; in 2004 he won three major awards for his recording of the Berg (in its original version) and Britten concertos. He also serves as associate artistic director of the eclectic Savannah (Georgia) Music Festival, and since 2010 as Artistic Partner at Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Their third album explores scenes of romantic miscommunication ("What the Hell") and self-doubt ("Stuck") with hazy grace, mixing lyrical directness with fuzzy, often gorgeous washes of guitar. "Out of the fog and finally feeling fine," Julia Shapiro sings on "Used to Spend." "My doubts are all gone and I'm having a pretty good time/Feeling like a champ, but for how long?" Taking cues from both the politics of the riot grrrl scene and the intricate, moody guitar-based sound of early-'90s Pacific Northwestern indie bands like Sleater-Kinney and Autoclave, Walla Walla, Washington-based Chastity Belt formed in 2010. The band consisted of lead vocalist/guitarist Julia Shapiro, bassist Annie Truscott, drummer Gretchen Grimm, and guitarist Lydia Lund. The group quickly integrated irreverent humor into its seemingly serious musical presence. Apart from witty and cutting lyrical content, the band named its first locally circulated demo recordings Fuck Chastity Belt and later shot press photos that portrayed Shapiro wearing a chastity belt made out of a raw steak. They continued this trend when releasing their proper debut, No Regerts, in 2013, subtly but intentionally misspelling "No Regrets" as one might on a horribly, ironically botched tattoo. The band toured heavily in support of No Regerts, and returned in early 2015 with sophomore album Time to Go Home on their new label home of Hardly Art Records. Chastity Belt traveled to Portland, Oregon to record fresh material with producer Matthew Simms in the summer of 2016. P4P2017 Moving into much rootsier territory than their former punk band DDT, brothers Luther (guitar, mandolin, vocals) and Cody Dickinson (drums, sampling) formed the North Mississippi Allstars in 1996 with bassist Chris Chew. The sons of legendary Memphis producer Jim Dickinson were born in Fayette County, Tennessee, and their family later moved to northern Mississippi, where the boys soaked up the country-blues sound of the region from artists like Mississippi Fred McDowell and R.L. Burnside. That became the chief inspiration for the Allstars, but the group also mixed in a rock edge, an alternative aesthetic (comparable to outfits like the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and the Black Keys), and a road-ready rock & roll sensibility akin to jam bands like Phish. After touring as an opening act for a variety of artists and honing their chops as a unit, the North Mississippi Allstars issued their debut, Shake Hands with Shorty, in the spring of 2000. The album was a significant success, earning a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary Blues Album, as did their 2001 sophomore set, 51 Phantom. Later in 2001, the North Mississippi Allstars teamed with John Medeski and pedal steel player Robert Randolph to form the Word, an instrumental gospel-blues band, for an album and tour. The North Mississippi Allstars regrouped with the addition of guitarist Duwayne Burnside, the son of R.L., for 2003's Polaris, which was followed by the concert album Hill Country Revue: Live at Bonnaroo in late 2004. Electric Blue Watermelon, which featured guest spots by Lucinda Williams, Robert Randolph, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Otha Turner, and others, appeared in 2005 from ATO Records and earned the band its third consecutive Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary Blues Album. Also in 2005, the group spent time supporting John Hiatt, who showcased the Allstars on his 2005 album Master of Disaster. This was the first of many extracurricular activities for the Allstars: in 2007, Luther Dickinson became the lead guitarist for the Black Crowes, juggling those duties with leading the Allstars, and while Luther was with the Crowes, Cody Dickinson and Chris Chew pursued their own side project, Hill Country Revue. The core trio of the Dickinson brothers and Chew returned in 2008 with Hernando, the first release on the band's own Songs of the South label. A year later in 2009, the Allstars issued Do It Like We Used to Do, a two-disc set of live performances that also included a third disc featuring a video documentary on the band. Luther and Cody's father, producer Jim Dickinson, passed away in late 2009. The brothers and fellow NMA member Chris Chew gathered in March of 2010 at the family-owned Zebra Studios to record a tribute. The band had help from a number of family friends who included Ry Cooder, Mavis Staples, Spooner Oldham, Alvin Youngblood Hart, and Jack Ashford. The end result was Keys to the Kingdom (on Songs of the South), a collection of new songs with a lone, single-chord blues cover of Bob Dylan's "Stuck Inside of Mobile (With the Memphis Blues Again)" added to the mix. The set was released in early 2011. In the summer of 2012, James Luther Dickinson's posthumous I'm Just Dead, I'm Not Gone was released. Recorded live in Memphis in 2006, it featured the NMA as his backing band. Arguably the band's masterpiece, World Boogie Is Coming appeared at the end of the summer 2013. Following a tour, the Dickinson Brothers called time on the band and immersed themselves in solo projects for a couple of years. Upon reassembling the North Mississippi Allstars, they entered the renowned Royal Studios in Memphis and enlisted Boo Mitchell as co-producer. They gathered a group of friends and longtime collaborators for the sessions, including Oteil Burbridge, Midnight North's Grahame Lesh, Sharisse Norman, Dominic Davis, Sharde Thomas, Kenny Brown, and Danielle Nicole. The completed album, Prayer for Peace, was announced in March of 2017; its title track and a cover of R.L. Burnside's "Long Haired Doney" were its singles. The full-length included a cover of Mississippi Fred McDowell's "You Got to Move."
