It's the continuation of a world Grace Cooper began illustrating as one of the lead songwriters of the San Francisco band The Sandwitches, and on her previous three collections of solo home recordings (released as limited run cassette tapes). As with the other solo albums, Cooper does the artwork for the album. Her delicate yet disturbing pen and watercolor creations are the perfect accompaniment to her songs, as though they've emerged from the same troubled dreams. Though understated, a sense of urgency permeates this record. Cooper's voice dances through the songs with a chameleon quality that's sultry and commanding on ''In Spite of Doom'' and desperate, vulnerable and sharp on ''Can't Play'' and ''Everlasting Arms.'' Her lyrics contain the weariness of giving in to a love requited, and the unsettling realities of maintaining that love. In some pieces it seems she no longer knows where to direct her endless yearning. She observes on ''Bad Timing Pt. 2'': ''Two boats they don't meet up in the night, they glide by each other and forever out of sight... they might just be the lucky ones.'' The spookiness of Cooper's sound a sound influential in some of The Sandwitches' best songs like ''Joe Says'' and ''In the Garden'' is still present here and especially on the darker second side. Piercing guitars and heartbeat drums on ''Everlasting Arms'' warn that ''something's growing in the basement'' and something comes ''from within.'' The recording quality of this release is raw but it is far from being a ''garage record.'' This interesting set (reissued by DCC as an audiophile CD) features Ross backed by an orchestra arranged and conducted by Johnnie Spence. The obvious high point is one of the darkest and scariest versions of "Love For Sale" ever recorded; Ross' desperate-sounding rendition is haunting. Otherwise, she performs a variety of standards in lightly swinging fashion, not scatting or using vocalese but instead working on interpreting the lyrics. Other highlights include "All of You," "Nature Boy," "Like Someone in Love" and "Limehouse Blues." Spring Can Really Hang You Up The Most (5:16) Dida Pelled: Plays And Sings While no "one size fits all" prescription exists for molding and educating unique artists, some schools seem to have an exceptional track record. A large segment of the who's who of jazz greats from Detroit went through Cass Technical High School and more than a few Texas jazz titans received their education at Booker T. Washington High School For The Performing And Visual Arts. Another, less likely source-The Thelma Yellin High School Of The Arts in Tel Aviv, Israel-wasn't really on anybody's radar twenty years ago, but has become the ultimate hotbed for Israeli jazz activity. Bassist Omer Avital, the Cohen siblings (Anat Cohen, Avishai Cohen - Trumpet and Yuval Cohen), and pianists Omer Klein and Shimrit Shoshan all blossomed in this artistic incubator. Now, guitarist/vocalist Dida Pelled deserves to be added to the list. Pelled has taken the prescribed course for Israeli jazz hopefuls, graduating from Thelma Yellin and honing her skills during her service in the Israeli Army, but she's no cookie-cutter performer. Pelled's warm voice possesses an emotive quality that's simultaneously soothing and intoxicating, and her guitar playing, which is built on her round sound, strong comping skills and soulful single note solo lines, places her in a category all her own. On Plays And Sings, the young guitarist proves to be an old soul, capable of crafting timeless, yet modern, interpretations of classic fare. While the core trio of Pelled, bassist Tal Ronen and drummer Gregory Hutchinson, are responsible for delivering these charming and swinging performances, a pair of guest trumpeters occasionally join in the music-making. Roy Hargrove provides little asides and some strong solo work on "Our Love Is Here To Stay," revels in the grooving atmosphere of Wes Montgomery's "Fried Pies," and follows the changes in mood on a Four Seasons favorite ("Can't Take My Eyes Off You"), while Fabio Morgera's pair of appearances feature his clean-toned trumpet work ("Three Coins In The Fountain") and muted obbligato ("More Than You Know"). While both men are welcome additions to the program, their appearances are a bonus, not a necessity. Pelled's guitar playing, which can be pleasantly dreamy ("More Than You Know"), quaint ("Stompin At The Savoy") and rhythmically engaging ("Fried Pies"), is of greater importance than any guest spots. When accompanying herself, she creates a mesh of warmth that perfectly matches her vocal style, but when she removes her voice from the equation, things can go in another direction. Her lines are often informed by a laid-back, Grant Green-influenced style of playing that touches on the blues in a soulful manner, but she also brings her background into play. Horace Silver's "Calcutta Cutie" might have originally contained allusions of India, but Pelled's angular lines and Ronen's exotic bass riff turn it into a musical caravan across the Negev desert. Plays And Sings doesn't present a singer that also plays a little guitar or a guitarist who occasionally picks up a microphone. Elli also has numerous acting credits, among them: Film -- September 12th, TV -- Cappelle's Show, and Off-Off-Broadway Theatre -- Guys & Dolls. Prior to returning to New York in 1979, Elli left her musical journey several times. The first to devote time to family; unexpectedly, the next followed a devastating accident on a snowy highway en route to a gig when the car carrying her quartet and equipment crashed into a disabled truck in 1976. A successful year-long tour of "Elli Fordyce And Her Favorite Things" ended abruptly and left several kinds of scars. Soon after, Elli stopped singing for 15 years ("Not even 'Happy Birthday,' not even in the shower," she'll say) and focused firmly on much needed physical, emotional and spiritual healing. But for Elli, music was not over. A ginger-colored Yorkie puppy named Dindi (pronounced Gingy, meaning "little jewel" in Portuguese as well as the title of Elli's favorite Jobim bossa nova) brought her back. She discovered that Dindi loved hearing Elli sing the song. Inspiration renewed, Elli joined a cabaret workshop taught by the brilliant MAC-Award-winning singer/songwriter Lina Koutrakos and, soon after, came under the spell of Barry Harris, renowned jazz pianist and educator, to whom she gives much of the credit for putting her squarely back on the path meant for her, making comeback inevitable. During 1955-1957 she was one of Bethlehem's few non-jazz artists although being with that label resulted in her interacting with veteran jazz musicians. In 1957 when it looked like folk music was going to be the next big trend (it would be, but not until the early '60s), she recorded a set of traditional melodies while accompanied by brass and string orchestra arranged by Russ Garcia that included West Coast jazz players (including Maynard Ferguson, Don Fagerquist, and Frank Rosolino). Faye was not the most subtle of singers but she sounds quite expressive on such numbers as "Frankie and Johnny," "St. James Infirmary," "John Henry," a variety of ancient folk songs, and even "Clementine." I've been singing his songs since I was a little girl. Moose [Charlap, Stewart's late husband] said once that every jazz composer thinks of Kern's "All the Things You Are" as the perfect song. It's like the National Anthem but better. No offense to America-I'm very patriotic! As I get older, I find more creative things to do with the melody and the lyric itself, which hopefully you'll notice in the show. You just can't miss with a Kern song. Kern is a giant. Everybody knows it, it's common knowledge in America and across the world. I lived in a time in my youth when there was such magic in the theater and such total creativity, and it was not so much competition between the great composers as much as it was a wonderful time on Broadway. I grew up. I got older. I learned about loss, great loss in my life, great joy in my life, and it's a matter of using your life experiences and transferring them to your audience. When I sing a great song, I want the audience to know that these people took time and effort and joy and love to write these wonderful stories, and I want to tell it like it is and not just sing the song. How can I explain it? I know one of my great experiences was when I was singing one of the old ballads and after I finished, no one applauded. I thought everyone had left the room. I didn't know what was going on. Show Me The Way To Go Home (2:02) Born in Lodi, Yankee took dance lessons as a child in both her home town and San Francisco, and by the tender age of 13 was already tap dancing in shows at the Golden Gate Theater. Two years later, she went to New York, where she was signed by Ted Lewis, and spent the next few years touring East Coast theaters in Lewis' variety show, appearing with Ben Blue, Sophie Tucker and Bill "Bojangles" Robinson. Returning to San Francisco, Yankee played numerous club dates before signing with Ray and Bea Goman in their North Beach review at Goman's "Gay '90s" nightclub for five years. She then formed her own singing act and toured major clubs around the country. In 1958 she joined the Turk Murphy band in San Francisco, and sang with him at the famed Earthquake McGoon's for five years before forming another band, Pat Yankee and the Sinners, touring the Las Vegas/Tahoe/Reno circuit. From 1972- 1981, she lived in Madrid, Spain, performed at the Whiskey Jazz Hotel, Dallas Club and Cova de Drogue, and was called the white queen of jazz by the Spanish press. Returning to San Francisco, Pat once again sang with Turk Murphy at both Earthquake McGoon's and at the Fairmont Hotel until Murphy's death in 1987. Yankee has performed To Bessie, With Love for the past five years at numerous jazz festivals around the country, in addition to performing at events overseas -- the Cork Jazz Festival in Ireland and jazz venues in Germany, Sweden and Australia, appearing with artists such as Dave Brubeck, Nina Simone, Carmen McRae and Gerry Mulligan. She was named Empress of the Jubilee at the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee in May 1999. She has made several recordings for RCA, Roulette and others. She has five recent CDs, her latest being Yankee Salutes Armstrong on the GHB label. She has been listed in Leonard Feather's Encyclopedia of Jazz since 1958.
