Soniccouture Wassolou Balafon KONTAKT | 329 Mb French musician Jean-Philippe Rykiel contacted us about a unique type of African balafon in which each key had "snares" that vibrated when played, giving it a interesting buzzing quality. Sometimes called a "gyil"(JEE-le), it's usually found in parts of northern Ghana, Burkina Faso, and south-eastern Mali. Hardwood keys are suspended over calabash gourds. Rykiel has long been involved with West African musicians, having collaborated with both the wonderful Salif Keita and Youssou N'Dour. For the balafon however, he knew of a virtuoso player from Burkina Faso named Mamadou Diabate now living in Austria. He enlisted Mamadou to play the instrument for a recording session that he would conduct himself. The recordings then made their way to us, and the result is the instrument you find here. Soniccouture Vibraphone KONTAKT UPDATE | 68 Mb Essentially a mechanised, 20th Century variation on the classic metallaphone, the vibraphone adds a constant modulation to its resonator tubes by the use of motorised fans. The fans, or discs, cover the top of the resonator tube and spin in unison, allowing full or partial function of the resonator tube depending on which point of the cycle the motor is in. The resulting tone is a type of tremolo effect - shimmering, golden, & very wobbly indeed; due to all resonators modulating together and thus aggregating the effect on the decaying notes. Soniccouture Grand Marimba-KONTAKT UPDATE | 69 Mb When we decided to sample a marimba, we knew we wanted to find a 5 octave concert model. There's something very special about the enormous bass notes of a full sized model. The Yamaha 6100 model, which was designed in collaboration with world-renowned marimba legend Keiko Abe, seemed to be the natural choice. A descendant of the African balafon, the modern marimba originated in Mexico, and is typified by wooden (rosewood or the cheaper padauk) bars mounted above metal resonator tubes, which can be tuned using stops. The 6100 marimba represents the absolute state of the art, with exclusive precision tuning which ensures true pitch and a full sound, while the Honduran Rosewood bars and welded resonators give rattle-free playing. Soniccouture Glass Works 2 (KONTAKT UPDATE) | 78 Mb Glass / Works is a Kontakt player instrument which collects together 3 extremely unusual and rare musical instruments which use glass to generate sound : Le Cristal Baschet, The Glass Armonica, and a set of Cloud Chamber Bowls. A bizarre sound sculpture designed in 1952 by Bernard and Fran?ois Baschet. It consists of about 4 octaves of chromatically tuned glass rods, which are rubbed with wet fingers. The vibration of the glass is passed to a heavy block of metal, which itself is tuned and in fact determines the final pitch. The entire mechanism is amplified by a large steel plate, called the flame. There are also three small fiberglass cones that amplify the higher frequencies. SonicCouture Balinese Gamelan II v1.1 KONTAKT UPDATE | 118 Mb Gamelan is an ensemble of instruments originating from Indonesia. The majority of Gamelan instruments are percussive, and most of these are bronze. They include xylophone-like metallophones of different sizes and pitch, tuned gong chimes, very large pitched gongs, and an assortment of drums and percussion. There are many types of Gamelan ensembles, but the two dominant types are Javanese and Balinese. Balinese Gamelan has a characteristic 'shimmering' sound which is due to the detuning of paired instruments playing the same musical part. Although Gamelan music has been around for centuries (there is evidence of instruments existing before 800 AD), it is very much a living music in Indonesia, and is growing in popularity in the west. Styles keep evolving and new Gamelan music is being written all the time. Balinese "Gong Kebyar", a particularly flamboyant style, has dominated much of the century and is probably Bali's most famous export. Gamelan music is very much about the collective - it has been described as 'a negotiation between musicians'. Many of the musicians play interlocking parts, in which alternate notes are shared between two instruments. SonicCouture Broken Wurli-KONTAKT DVDR | 3.48 Gb Why did we sample a Broken Wurlitzer 200A electric piano? We were asking around producers we know, to see if anyone had any junky, but cool sounding old keyboards ; Neil Davidge, producer for Massive Attack, said "..erm, I have an old Wurlizer piano with a dodgy distorting speaker that sounds great". So, we borrowed it, and he was right, it did sound really great. The left hand speaker breaks up and sounds absolutely savage, while the right hand speaker does the expected 'clean' (but lo-fi) sound. We wanted to sample it, so we conducted some experiments with just recording single notes from the speaker with a microphone, and it sounded very cool - giving the iconic Wurlizter tone some real drive and bite. Growling and snarling or warm and mellow Broken Wurli is a totally unique electric piano instrument - using the 3 dials ( below) on the front panel you can mix any sound you need ; from classic, clean line out, to growling distortion and buzzing chords. The 3 round-robin layers make the playing experience feel very real - this is the first sampled electric piano we have played that really feels physical and mechanical. Recording the broken-ness To make sure the full nastiness of the broken speaker distortion was fully captured, 4 different mics were used in the studio. A pair of vintage 1970s AKG 414s, one on each speaker, to record the warmth and low end. Then an SM57, for an essential dynamic mic sound, and finally we settled on a Sennheiser e600 series dynamic mic for a further contrasting character. The mics were then mixed down to a mono channel for each speaker. Racks of character The mics were paired with some esoteric 1970s preamps by Neumann and Siemens. The line-out signal was also recorded simultaneously, giving the 3 distinct sounding channels that make up the Broken Wurli instrument. The vintage character of the recording ( made at Lodge Studios, Surrey, England ), combined with the 3 round robin alternate sample layers and the 9 velocity layers make this the most solid, realistic sounding sampled electric piano we've ever heard. SonicCouture The Attic Update Mashine Presets MULTiFORMAT | 7.6 GB The Attic : a project to document and sample interesting, characterful instruments that may not always be the obvious choice when we think of classics. Instruments which, when added to a track, instantly add some special magic, even if it is due to the fact that it sounds a bit cheap or quirky. We asked around some friendly producers: Neil Davidge, Adrian Utley and Liam Howe were all happy to open up their attics to us, and the resulting collection is a fascinating journey into the corners early analogue synthesis, offering a huge palette of sounds to reach into when you need colour, character and exuberance. The Instruments 10 different virtual instruments in one package. Meticulous sampling : every single note from each orginal unit is recorded, capturing all the variation and inconsistencies that make vintage analogues so appealing. Modelled analogue behaviour : oscillator drift, natural attack variation, custom chorus and ensemble effects, mono mode & legato Extensive effects section with bespoke convolution effects, phaser/chorus/delay, compression, EQ, filters, amp modelling, overdrive etc. Mini 700 A simple monosynth by Korg from 1974, the same era as the Minimoog and the Roland SH2000. It has semi-fixed parameters, with a selection of toggle switches offering limited editing of these. It has a very fat, zappy sound, and fantastic chunky coloured controls. The filter (Traveler) is particularly interesting, with a LPF and HPF semi linked by interlocking faders. Original waveforms and presets fully sampled Traveler dual filter behaviour modelled Polyphonic and detune modes added RS202 String Machine Dating from 1976, the RS202 is 61 note polyphonic, with Strings I, Strings II and Brass sound sources, and a split keyboard - any sound could by assigned to either section of the keyboard. The ensemble chorus effect was a key part of the sonic signature, contributing to its classic, fizzing disco string sound.The RS202 is an all time classic string machine. Brass, String II & String II settings fully sampled Original switch settings modelled Ensemble detune effect modelled Additional filter and EGs added Jennings Univox Dating from 1951, and a true oddity. The first electronic venture for Tom Jennings who later went on to create Vox amplifiers AC15, AC30 etc. The Univox was used by the Beatles during their early Cavern days in Liverpool and can be heard on Telstar by the Tornados.In about 1951/1952 the Univox took off in a big way due to its competitive price and Tom's country wide marketing program. The first version was the J6, single keyboard model, later followed by the J10 with two rows of Tone & effect tabs. All models were supplied with metal screw-on clips, to fasten it under the right hand side of a piano. Later we designed an adjustable chromed stand that enabled the user to do gigs in other locations with out having to screw on fixing brackets each time. Most customers in those days were either Pub owners or pianists playing Pub gigs. This particular Univox has a great pedigree as it was loaned to us by Adrian Utley from Portishead. It typically features a touch plate, and buttons for major, minor, and diminished chords. This unit (belonging to Neil Davidge of Massive Attack) is a 'System Two', and it has a great synth tone, which sounds 'cheap' in all the right ways. You can mix two different tones, one straight, and one modulated with a basic LFO. While not sounding much like a plucked string, it does have a pure character all its own, which won it many fans, such as Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno. This Omnichord unit loaned by Neil Davidge from Massive Attack. Two 'voice' settings fully sampled Chord matrix function fully modelled Strum Plate - strum in real time with MIDI controller Detune and Width controls added Korg LP10 Electronic Piano Korgs first ever electronic piano, the fuzzy, dreamy tones of the LP10 weren't strictly realistic, but with retro-spectacles on it has a lot of charm. With Piano, Electric piano and Clav settings and a useful shaping EQ, but no velocity sensitivity. Piano, Clav and Electric piano settings fully sampled Additional detune, velocity, Filters and EG controls Hammond Solovox The USA precurser to the Jennings Univox, produced in Canada for Hammond by the Northern Electric Company, Ontario between 1940 and 1948. A monophonic, valve driven keyboard instrument with a separate amplifier cabinet, the sound was derived from a single LC oscillator which had a frequency range of one octave. The signal from the oscillator was then passed through a series of 5 frequency dividers to create a further two octaves. On the front of the instrument there were a series of large thumb operated buttons for oscillator range (switch-able +/- 3 octaves: 'soprano', 'contralto', 'tenor', 'bass'), vibrato, attack time, 'deep tone', 'full tone', '1st voice', 2nd voice', 'brilliant' and a switch for selecting woodwind, string sound or mute. All 'stop' settings fully sampled Sampled through original speaker cabinet Knee Volume controller modelled for real-time MIDI control Polyphonic mode for ancient pad sounds EG and filter controls added Godwin String Concert 249 Little known compared to the RS202 and Arp Omnis etc, but in fact this string synth has one of the most lifelike string sounds you will hear from an analogue synth. Manufactured in Italy by Sisme, it has 49 keys, 3 string sounds - Cello 16' / Viola 8' / Violin 4' controllable by faders. Its chorus and tremolo are particularly unique, adding a fabulous shimmer to the sound. Cello, Viola and Violin settings fully sampled Chorus and tremolo controls modelled Philips Philicorda The Philicorda is a 1960s transistor based organ that has found favour with producers in recent times ; one was used on the album '19' by Adele by producer Jim Abiss. This particular unit belongs to producer Liam Howe, and has been used on records by Marina and the Diamonds, Ellie Goulding, and Cocknbullkid. Every 'stop' setting fully sampled Chord function fully sampled Original reverb included in effects section Output noise with 'backdrop' functionality Additional filters and EGs SH2000 The second synth ever produced by Roland (after the sh1000), it was designed to sit on top of a home organ to provide additional sounds. To that end, it is based around presets which are selected by a series of brightly coloured paddle-switches, and sounds very fat and characterful indeed. Basic filter and LFO controls are present, as well as 'growl' and 'wow' effects, which can be linked to aftertouch to give great performance potential. All original SH2000 presets sampled Original Wow setting sampled for each patch Full Aftertouch control Synthi AKS The EMS Synthi AKS is a legendary instrument with an illustrious history. First manufactured in 1972 by EMS in Putney, south-west London, The Synthi A was basically a portable version of EMS's famous VCS3 synthesiser, and the KS keyboard (an unplayable 30-note touchplate) was added to make the Synthi AKS. It cost 420.It was quickly adopted by the likes of Brian Eno and Pink Floyd, and has been used by experimental musicians ever since. The Synthi has a unique patching system that uses a small patchbay grid. Each of the Synthi's components appear as a source and destination on the patchbay, and by placing a pin into that x-y position, you can route the signal from one component to the other. This was a very effective way to make a powerful modular system very compact. The Attic features 3 different Synthi AKS instruments : Multisamples : chromatically tuned patches that can be layered and played polyphincally as well as monophonically. Loops : sequence patterns generated by the Synthi and presented in Kontakt's Beat Machine mode. FOCUS SFX : Individual hits and sounds from the Synthi : something it excels at and the source of the real sci-fi sound. Soniccouture Grand Marimba KONTAKT-MAGNETRiXX TEAM MAGNETRiXX 12 May 2014 | 3.22 GB When we decided to sample a marimba, we knew we wanted to find a 5 octave concert model. There's something very special about the enormous bass notes of a full sized model. The Yamaha 6100 model, which was designed in collaboration with world-renowned marimba legend Keiko Abe, seemed to be the natural choice. A descendant of the African balafon, the modern marimba originated in Mexico, and is typified by wooden (rosewood or the cheaper padauk) bars mounted above metal resonator tubes, which can be tuned using stops. The 6100 marimba represents the absolute state of the art, with exclusive precision tuning which ensures true pitch and a full sound, while the Honduran Rosewood bars and welded resonators give rattle-free playing. Tremolo Module Tremolo is such a common marimba technique we've designed an original Kontakt module to mimic this type of performance with unparalleled accuracy. It comfortably handles 1 to 4 voices of harmony (since marimba players rarely use more than 4 mallets), and will intelligently remap the tremolo in real time based on the incoming MIDI or your playing. The speed and velocity of the Tremolo can be modulated in real time using a MIDI controller. Recording Grand Marimba The instrument is massive, almost 3 meters across, which makes recording it a challenge ; it isn't possible to get too close to an instrument that large and maintain any sort of sensible stereo image. And since we were aiming for an intimate, non-ambient, recording, we needed a very large but relatively dry studio to work in. 3 Mic pairs were used : AKG414s (with CK12 capsules), Shoeps cardioids, and AEA ribbons further back in the room. These mics were mixed down to a stereo signal in post production. The positions can be seen in the picture below. Articulations Mallet : The main articulation, and the most common marimba sound. 5 different mallet types were used during the recording, to ensure a consistent timbre across the entire range of the instrument. Roll : A played Roll, sampled and looped from the marimba player's actual performance. Don't confuse this with Tremolo. In fact, marimba players rarely use Rolls, so this is a special effect of sorts. Stick : Made by hitting the marimba with the handle of the mallets rather than the head. This is a kind of special effect you find in contemporary marimba repertoire, so we included it here. This sound is sometimes called "Rattan". Bow : The marimba bowed with a cello bow. Produces a sustained, pad-like sound.
