The Glory Of Love The music on this first solo effort from trumpeter Kermit Ruffins is so good-natured and joyous that one can mostly overlook its derivative nature. Ruffins clearly had a good time playing trumpet (and occasionally singing) on such numbers as "Monday Night In New Orleans," "Girl of My Dreams" and "When My Dreamboat Comes Home." Not everything works on the date: "Rosetta" is taken much too fast for the musicians; there are a few too many average vocals; Ruffins did not have that original a sound yet; and some of the performances are quite predictable. This stellar opus was unanimously well received by the prog community, earning very high marks indeed and should have been album of the year in 2014. The critical praise was well deserved as the album was a total gem of atmospheric and modern prog, expertly created and performed by a tight crew of friends and colleagues. Jerzy's guitar mastery is never in doubt, a fluid and inspired conveyance of axe magic, but his use of synthesizers for maximum effect needs also to be admired. On this his second work, it's his vocals that really stand out, in my opinion, as his exasperated tone rekindles fond memories of early Mark Hollis (Talk Talk fame), a man with tremendous pipes who does not receive enough credit as a top notch singer. Jerzy does very well on the microphone, most definitely. The rhythm section returns for another spirited display of tandem abilities, as Krzystof Wyrwa of fellow Polish band Millenium and Rafal Paszcz (ex-Albion) put on quite a show, tremendously dynamic and punchy. Mark Koslik plays a definitive bass guitar in tight with drummer George Vein. Merv Eddy is the band's extraordinary pedal steel guitarist. Shelby Styer, Mike's daughter, sings harmony on the album with Karen, Ray and producer/engineer Rick Witkoski. Rick was instrumental in bringing the elements of the band together. This Machine (Radio Edit) [3:45] FourPlay String Quartet added "String Quartet" to their name to differentiate themselves from the American jazz group Fourplay, but they are also a band in the most rock & roll sense of the word. Their viola and violin players stand rather than perching on stools, allowing them to avoid the staid atmosphere stereotypically assumed of classical music and giving them the freedom to bob and dance around the stage (the cellist sits out of necessity, though sometimes playing the instrument more like a double bass). Despite lacking guitar, bass, and drums, their performances follow the rock mode, including covers of well-known rock songs. The four original members were all students attending the University of New South Wales together in 1995, fans of alternative rock who played classical instruments. When they discovered that they could add pickups and distortion to their stringed instruments, they started getting together outside of class to play versions of songs by Jeff Buckley and Metallica and whoever else they were hearing on the radio that week for their friends. On a whim they entered the university's band competition with a set of these rock covers. To their surprise they not only won, but were immediately approached to be the support act for a Max Sharam concert. At that point the quartet consisted of Tim Hollo on viola and vocals, Peter Hollo on cello and vocals, Chris Emerson on viola, and Philippa Allan on violin. This unusual lineup of two violas rather than two violins added depth to their sound and made it easier to transpose rock rhythms onto the classical instruments. Allan was more interested in pursuing classical violin, however, and was soon replaced by Lara Goodridge, who contributed not only violin but also vocals and some of her original compositions, helping to move them away from purely being a covers band. The novelty of their style earned them appearances on television and radio and when their first album, Catgut Ya' Tongue, was released independently in 1998, it sold out in three weeks. A European tour followed, at the end of which viola player Emerson left -- the second member to leave for a career in classical music -- to be replaced by Veren Grigorov, who brought a passion for composing original Gypsy-inspired pieces, adding to the group's evolving sound. In 2000 they released their second album, The Joy of FourPlay, which included five originals as well as covers of songs by bands like the Clouds and Pop Will Eat Itself. It was followed by a remix album called Digital Manipulation, organized by cellist Peter Hollo, who doubled as a DJ under the name of Raven. It featured remixes of their music created by Australian electronic artists including B(if)tek, Machine Translations, Traksewt, and Pimmon. Violinist Grigorov left in 2004 and was replaced by Shenton Gregorio of Shenzo's Electric Stunt Orchestra, who perform while hanging from wires and sometimes flying over the heads of their audience, upside down. Where previously FourPlay String Quartet's original material had been composed by one of the individuals and then brought to the band, Gregorio encouraged them to jam like a traditional rock band. The results were heard on their 2006 album, Now to the Future, which was produced by Magoo. Six String Stories is the one that the fans who pack her hometown gigs have been waiting for. You ll still hear the scorching solos-- but there s more to Joanna Connor than that. The disc s ten tracks include tastes of gospel, rock, soul and funk; all with the gutsy singing and heartfelt playing that have always been her trademarks. Connor wrote eight tracks on Six String Stories with Marion Lance Lewis, a mainstay of her live band. No doubt you have seen it by now: That viral video of a woman onstage in a bright purple dress, playing one absolute scorcher of a slide guitar solo. That s Joanna Connor in her home turf of Chicago, with the firepower she delivers to local crowds on a nightly basis. That video has gone around the world a few times, getting millions of views and being re-posted in Japan, Russia and all over Europe. It was just a phenomenal thing that happened. I was getting calls from America s Got Talent and movie people reaching out. I think people loved the combination: Here is a woman who looks like somebodys mom, and she is playing like this. What I remember most was that it was 90 degrees that day, so I was wearing the coolest dress I had. The viral phenomenon ironically happened while Connor herself has been off the road, being a mom and playing club residencies, to the tune of 200 local gigs a year. But a studio return was long overdue and Six String Stories, her first album in a dozen years. The disc s ten tracks all but two written by her with band-mate Marion Lance Lewis-- include tastes of gospel, rock, soul and funk; all with the gutsy singing and heartfelt playing that have always been her trademarks. Connor admits that it took some coaxing to get her back into the studio. I have always been a live musician and going into the studio used to be a daunting, scary thing. That sense of self-determination extends to tracks like the empowering It s a Woman s Way which gives her daughter a little romantic advice. She broke up with her first boyfriend before the prom, so I wrote that for her. Then there s the album s other cover, Jill Scott s Golden, which Connor makes her own with a forceful spoken part. It s about a woman taking control of her life, and praising the creator for giving it to her. I think the gift of approaching middle age is that you know who you are and become confident in yourself. For me that s been a real journey, and a lot of it is about your own attitude. At the other extreme are guitar-slinging tracks like Halsted Street ( I went for a Metallica kind of sound on those power chords, she says) and the Bayou-inspired Swamp Swim. Then there s Heaven, which takes everything back to church. I wrote that as more of a political song with a West African feel, but Lance gave it more of a gospel sound. His brothers are pastors and have churches, so they brought that kind of feel into it. It started with a problem: how can you get world class orchestral effects, that sound like a real orchestra playing, which are highly expressive, completely controllable and easy to play, and yet avoid having to pay for 10,000 recording sessions? After sifting in vain through commercially available premium orchestral sound libraries, producer Dan Graham found nothing that could fulfill all of these requirements. And so, he set out to record his own dream orchestral sample collection - all the weird and wonderful effects he'd employed in his own live orchestral recordings - something that would be complex, alive but easily controllable with a Mod Wheel. THE RECORDINGS Recorded over a week in May 2010 at Liverpool's famous Parr Street Studios (Coldplay, Genesis amongst others), four world class Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra players were heavily multi-tracked up to create 16 violins, 8 cellos, 6 flutes and 6 piccolos for that big ensemble effect. THE PROGRAMMING 20 hours of stereo 24-bit 44.kHz audio was painstakingly edited down, looped and programmed in Kontakt 3.5 over 3 months by Dan Graham, programmer Andy Flett and scripter Mario Kruelj until this beautiful library was finished and put to immediate effective use on a series of tracks for movie trailers. Tried, tested and satisfied, the collection was then finally handed over to Zero G so that these wonderful sounds could be shared with the most demanding composers and producers in the world. * THE SOUNDS * LIVE vs MUTATED The Kontakt Instruments are divided into two top categories - Live and Mutated. The Live Instruments present the sounds as they were recorded - no effects, pitch shifting, time stretching or other audio trickery. You should use these for realism and expensive orchestral depth. The Mutated sounds have been bent and tortured every which way - time stretched, pitch shifted, effected, reversed, distorted and so on. Being built from real orchestral recordings they always exude organic class, even when the result is distinctly synthesized. MICROPHONE POSITIONS The performers were recorded at 3 mic positions: close, overhead and room. You can access each of these channels from the user interface. The mic positions each have their own character, and your blend will depend on your needs. The Close versions are great for dry, close-up intimacy. The Overhead versions have a rich, well-balanced clarity, while the Room versions are more wide and cinematic. LARGE ENSEMBLE vs SMALL ENSEMBLE The Live sounds are mostly presented in Large Ensemble and Small Ensemble versions - typically this will mean 6 to 16 players on the Large Instruments and 2 players on the Small Instruments. As you'll hear, the small versions give a more intimate sound while the larger versions have more power. THE LIVE INSTRUMENTS ATONAL ATMOSPHERES These are looped, unpitched Instruments with a high degree of Mod Wheel control from delicate softness to screechy power. Generally speaking they have overtones of suspense and horror, and fall into the following sub-categories: * Eerie Sirens: Here notes slide slowly around a semitone interval, producing an eerie emotional effect like 'things are going wrong, and something awful is about to happen'. * Swarm: Here notes are played tremolo (rapid bowing (strings), or flutter tongue (flutes)), while moving rapidly and randomly around a one-octave interval. The effect is one of chaos, as if many bad things are arriving at the same time - perfect to represent insect swarm or zombie attacks. * Sick Swirl: Similar to Swarms, but played legato not tremolo, the effect is one of nausea, vertigo and awful realizations. * Pizzicato Swarm (strings only): Random pizzicato notes played across a one-octave range, this sounds like a swarm of many bad little creatures. * Needle Swarm (strings only): Random col legno notes (played by tapping the strings with the back of the bow), similar in effect to Pizzicato Swarm, but the creatures are smaller and more scurrying. * Air Needle Swarm (flute & piccolo only): Similar in concept to the string Needle Swarm, the effect is something like an attack of mechanical wooden birds. * Solo Creaks (strings only): This set is velocity sensitive rather than Mod Wheel controlled and gives you a big set of cello and violin creaks, created by dragging the bow intensely against the strings. They might suggest squealing pigs or (say) a haunted house with an evil no-faced grandma rocking contentedly on her chair just before hurling knitting needles into your eyes. Or creaking old ships and taut ropes about to break. PITCHED PADS These are played on specific notes and spread across the keyboard so they can be used for chords or notes that harmonize with the rest of your score. * Celestial Tremolo (strings only): Quiet tremolo notes with occasional loud notes, panned around so that the louder notes only hit randomly and sparsely, like the twinkling of stars. A good twinkling effect is with minor 6th or augmented 5th chords in the high registers, with a more tense and dark feel in the lower cello registers. * Trembling Needles (strings only): Similar to Celestial Tremolo but played with the clicky taps of col legno (tapping the strings with the wooden back of the bow). The atmosphere is light, tense and expectant. * Pizzicato Sea (strings only): Also similar to Celestial Tremolo but played pizzicato. Suits being played with a random cluster of notes to give a sense of dislocation and strangeness. * Undulations: An oasis of beauty; gentle vibrato notes drift in and out, creating elegant natural movement while a chord is held down. * Shivers (flute & piccolo only): similar to Celestial Tremolo but on flutes, the mood is suspended and tense. * Sung Harmonics (flute and piccolo only): an unearthly sound created by the female flautist singing wavering notes that clash against the simultaneously played notes, creating strange harmonic interferences.
