He formed his first band while he was living in Buffalo, New York and running the Governor's Inn House of Blues in the 1960s. He and his band would back up the traveling musicians who came through, including blues legends like Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Big Joe Turner, Freddie King, Lowell Fulson, and Koko Taylor. Peterson was born November 4, 1937 in Russell County, Alabama. Peterson was strongly influenced by gospel music in the rural area he grew up in, and he began singing in church as a child. Thanks to his father's juke joint, he was exposed to blues at an early age, and later followed in his footsteps in upstate New York. After leaving home at age 14, he headed to Gary, Indiana, where he sang with his friend John Scott. While still a teen, he began playing guitar, entirely self-taught. Peterson cited musicians like Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf (Chester Burnett), Jimmy Reed, and B.B. King as his early role models. After moving to Buffalo in 1955, he continued playing with various area blues bands, and ten years later he opened his own blues club. In 1970, Peterson recorded his first album, The Father, the Son, the Blues on the Perception/Today label. While he ran his blues club at night, he supplemented his income by running a used-car lot during the day. Peterson's debut album was produced and co-written with Willie Dixon, and it featured a then-five-year-old Lucky Peterson on keyboards. Peterson followed it up with Tryin' to Keep the Blues Alive a few years later. Peterson's other albums included Rough and Ready and Too Many Knots for the Kingsnake and Ichiban labels in 1990 and 1991, respectively. The album that put Peterson back on the road as a national touring act was 1995's Don't Let the Devil Ride for the Jackson, Mississippi-based Waldoxy Records. Throughout the '90s and up to the mid-2000s, Peterson was also an active live presence on the Tampa, Florida blues scene, and the 2000s also saw Peterson record another duo album with son Lucky, 2004's If You Can't Fix It on the JSP label. Peterson returned to Alabama in the mid-2000s, and died of a heart attack there on December 12, 2010. But on this special project, he is heard as a talented tenor-saxophonist who draws on the sounds and styles of Lester Young and Coleman Hawkins, finding his own voice somewhere in between. Glenn sounds quite at home playing with the vintage rhythm sections yet gives the music his own twist and never tries to just merely copy or recreate the past. Relatively few jazz musicians have been equally comfortable on both brass and reed instruments. Benny Carter, Ira Sullivan and Scott Robinson come to mind along with just a handful of others. Glenn was never told that it was difficult to play both brass and reeds, so he developed his own musical conceptions, giving one the impression that it is effortless. But that is consistent with his career for he has often made the difficult seem natural. Although he has loved playing tenor since he picked up his first saxophone when he was 13, Glenn Zottola had never recorded a full set on that instrument. Making this CD even more unique is that Glenn is heard playing along with some of the earliest performances recorded for the acclaimed Classic Jazz series. Dating from 1952, the rhythm sections feature such notables as pianists Nat Pierce and Don Abney, and guitarists Mundell Lowe and Jimmy Raney taking short solos while bassist Milt Hinton, Oscar Pettiford and Wilbur Ware, and drummers Osie Johnson, Kenny Clarke and Bobby Donaldson give quiet and steady support. Because Glenn has a timeless and very flexible style, he adapts his playing on this unique set, sounding a bit like a cousin of Lester Young and Stan Getz. His style, hinting at swing, bop and cool jazz, fits the era perfectly. Performing 10 standards including "Too Marvelous For Words," "Body And Soul," "Three Little Words" and "Fine And Dandy," Glenn Zottola plays creatively within the style of 1952 cool swing without sacrificing his own individuality. If given a blindfold test, few listeners would guess that Glenn's playing took place nearly 60 years after that of the rhythm sections and some might speculate that this was a long lost session recorded at the Lighthouse. Us (3:28) After establishing herself as one to watch with debut LP, Ett, Editions Mego's brightest young artist, Klara Lewis, follows extensive touring since that 2014 release with the deeply focussed, multi-dimensional sound designs of Too. It's no secret that Klara is Graham Lewis ov Wire's daughter, and therefore not difficult to draw a line between her investigations of laptop-as-loom for creating vast, enveloping tapestries of field recordings and electro-acoustic process, and her dad's exploratory, studio-as-instrument work with Dome in the early '80s. Klara clearly has a keen ear attuned to the nuance of texture, tone, and spatial dynamic within electronic and organic spheres, underpinned with a rhythmic subtlety that integral yet not overbearing within Too. His assailant, a woman, told him to fork over that night's pay, adding injury to insult. Still, for all of the drawbacks, Langford and his band intend to remain in Spokane between tours that take them to Norway, Belgium, and throughout Europe. Because their hometown is also home to an incredible number of extremely talented musicians, it's where Langford intends to base the Taildraggers for a long time to come. It's in the smoky air of a billiards room during the lowdown and dirty shuffle "Sick and Tired of Being Sick and Tired" and in the swagger of "Lowdown Hoedown," which suggests -- in a good way -- SRV's "Look at Little Sister."
