When deciding on the selections for this CD I chose songs that were poignant during various developmental stages of my personal as well as my musical life. The music of Louis Armstrong (Pops) was on the "hit parade" with me from day one of listening-from the Hot Fives and Sevens all the way through to the All Stars. From my first recording of "Keyhole Blues" (Hot Fives) to "Dream A Little Dream" (with Ella) to "Hello Brother" (All Stars) to "Black and Blue" (All Stars), I enjoyed each tune that Pops did with various groups and configurations. Pops was also an inspiration for the new compositions in this session. "Hello Pops" is my way of saying thanks to Louis Armstrong for what he did for me. If I could do that for 10 quadrillion, it wouldn't amount to what he did for me, is my direct sentiment and feeling about it all. "Pops for President" was inspired by a video clip of the All Stars with Louis singing "Black and Blue" to 100,000 Africans that were at war but called a truce just to attend his performance. What better candidate to bring world peace? Can you think of one? I can think of none!!! Pops touched EVERYBODY!!! Still brings tears to my eyes when I think about it. Come on folks, Vote Pops for Pres-i-dent!!! "Meatball 1, 2, 3," well, that's something that just came to me in the dressing room after a gig one night in Wisconsin. Sitting backstage after everyone had left the theatre, I picked up my trumpet and began to play what became this tune. Who knows why I was thinking about meatballs, but here it is in this offering as a song with a simple melody and me playing Trumpet (Meatball 1), Trombone (Meatball 2), and Tuba (Meatball 3). Pops used to write songs about food so I guess he and I have that in common, and that's just how my mind works sometimes. I hope you enjoy this CD as much as I have enjoyed putting it together. There, his stellar performance astounded audiences, musicians and critics alike. Issued as part of the album New Faces at Newport, it opened up for him the prospect of a career in jazz. Backed by Ramsey Lewiss well integrated trio, he made his first record as leader a few months later, working beautifully with Lewis on the tribute album to the late trumpeter, Clifford Brown, a boyhood friend of the vibist, included here. As a cop, however, Winchester was violating police regulations by working as a weekend musician in his home town and in Philadelphia jazz spots. So, having recorded few highly praised albums, after eleven years of trying to decide between pounding a beat and keeping one, he turned in his badge and gun in the summer of 1960 and joined the jazz fraternity full time. Benson's and Cole's careers are remarkably similar, both becoming known first as instrumentalists, Cole as a pianist, and Benson, of course, as a guitarist, with both eventually easing into the pop mainstream because of their voices. Cole was a one of a kind vocalist, of course, and even Benson wouldn't claim to equal him as a singer, but Benson has a similarly soothing and lush tenor voice that more than holds its own on these familiar songs. The album is bookended by two versions of the Cole classic "Mona Lisa," the first a rare recording of Benson at the age of eight singing it sweetly and charmingly while playing ukulele, while the album closes with a full big-band, Nelson Riddle-arranged orchestral version that also features some sweet guitar from Benson. In between are warm, smooth, and soothing versions of "Walking My Baby Back Home" and "I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter," a bouncing and bopping "Route 66," and nice takes on "Unforgettable" (featuring Wynton Marsalis), "When I Fall in Love" (featuring Idina Menzel), "Smile" (featuring Till Br??nner), and "Too Young" (featuring Judith Hill), all given the full big-band orchestral treatment from the Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra conducted by Randy Waldman (Waldman also arranged several of the pieces here). This record sees 15 artists covering Chris Smither songs, most take Smither's own laid-back semi-acoustic approach to the songs but others go a different route - Tim O'Brien turns "Origins of the species" into a New Orleans jazz workout and Paul Cebar and his band give "No love today" a more modern New Orleans R&B makeover, Aoife O'Donavon and Stephanie Coleman completely reimagine "Small revelations" as a Celtic ballad, while long-time Smither friend Peter Mulvey makes "Time to spend" into a Western Swing two-step! Mary Gauthier sounds like Lucinda Williams on her version of "I feel the same" and I loved Mark Erelli and Jeffery Foucault's harmonising on "Song for Susan", while Dave Alvin turns in an electric version of the title track with nice slide guitar, more nice guitar from Jorma Kaukonen on "Leave the light on". I particularly liked Eileen Jewell's version of "Can't shake these blues" and also Patty Larkin's "Train home" - surprisingly both artists turn in brooding, bluesy versions much darker than Chris's originals. There isn't a bad track here, everyone manages to evoke the spirit of Mr. Smither while putting their own personal spin on the songs - which for me is exactly what successful tribute records should be doing.
