Out by popular demand, the cmiVFX Look Development series makes it to Autodesk Smoke and Flame! Just a few short weeks ago, our look development courses raised many eyebrows and emails from all around the world started coming in. We heard your requests and here is our answer! Now all of you who wanted high end compositing and editorial on your Mac can follow along with your Linux big brother and share the fun with no limitations. This training video is completely congruent between the two different applications all the way down to the 3d tracker section. When Visual Effects is a priority in your life, you know you can count on cmiVFX to keep you on top of your game!

Chapter Descriptions

Introduction

We always like to give a brief overview of what we cover in our lessons. Just remember there is always a lot more in our videos than what we introduce in this chapter.

The Map Is The Key

How many times have you received and image sequence that looks like a Jackson Pollock Painting full of swirly colored pixels and have been asked to key something out or even 3d track it? We include a shot that looks good by itself without treatment, but to perform any time of visual effect on it, seems almost impossible. By adding several different techniques together, you can separate the image into quality section to allow non-destructive visual effects operations in multiple locations. This chapter shows you how to make those separations using extremely unusual techniques.

I'm Tweakin' Out

Due to the nature of how we separate the image structure, we will need to use context based viewing to control the mattes for each sub-section manifested by our custom Noise Removal Keyer. Add a bit of "Maynard Keying" into the mix and everything comes together!

Masking Complexity

It wouldn't be a Chris Maynard video without extreme usage of color channels. Learn how to manage large numbers of procedural nodes in the FX Tree by designing virtual layers in your node structures. This technique works exactly the same in Flame Premium, so everyone can follow along.

Camouflage-Man

Camo-man you say? Sure, why not?! When it comes to look development, the sky is the limit. The hard part is preparing the shot so you can go totally weird on it. In this chapter, you get a little creative, and allow yourself to assemble several different parts of the image frame to come up with a unique look for your client. We chose one idea, but you can choose another and still follow along with the lesson!

Variety's A Spice Alright

The best part of working in a node based software is the ability to work non-destructively. You can change your mind at any time and even add to your FX tree without worrying that previous versions will be destroyed. In this chapter we really get to make versioning a priority so clients can choose what style they might like best. In reality, most clients will mix and match several styles together, and by building your trees like ours, you will not have to worry about quick changes at all!

Summary

What can we say? Hundreds of emails asking about making a Look Dev course for Flame or Smoke was enough to make it happen. cmiVFX takes a strong position towards giving customers what they ask for. This video is an unusual topic for sure. When we create new ideas, its viability is only as strong as its ongoing support from the users. Seems like Look Development in compositing is here to stay. Thanks for your continued support, and please continue to send in your comments to our support line.
