C??l??br?? en son temps comme l'un des plus grands pianistes, dot?? de moyens techniques stup??fiants, Leopold Godowsky (1870-1938) a presque exclusivement compos?? pour le piano, un immense catalogue riche de plus de quatre cent pi?¨ces dont plus de la moiti??, ?  l'instar de Liszt, sont des transcriptions, arrangements ou paraphrases. Comme chez Liszt, le but n'est pas de donner une transcription fid?¨le et litt??rale de l'original, c'est le moins que l'on puisse dire ! L'??uvre est compl?¨tement retravaill??e avec une grande libert??, ce qui donne lieu ?  de v??ritables appropriations, des recompositions tout ?  fait personnelles - ces r??alisations deviennent des ??uvres autant de Godowsky que de Chopin, Schubert ou Bach. Outre la traditionnelle transcription d'??uvres originellement ??crites pour d'autres formations ou instruments ainsi que la composition de grandes paraphrases, la sp??cificit?? et grande originalit?? de son travail est d'avoir souvent utilis?? comme base de pi?¨ces initialement ??crites pour le piano, ce en quoi il fait figure de pionnier. Le pianiste Laurent Wagschal, qui peut d??j?  s'enorgueillir d'une bonne trentaine de r??alisations discographiques, souligne ici combien Godowsky a apport?? du sien, certes, mais combien le g??nie original de l'??uvre qu'il transforme reste intact, indestructible.
