W filmie Russella Harbaugha odnaleźć można echa twórczości Johna Cassavetesa, ikony amerykańskiego kina niezależnego. Obaj reżyserzy posiedli umiejętność opowiadania o prozie życia w sposób niezwykły, a przy tym szalenie autentyczny. Punktem wyjścia w Love After Love nie jest jednak życie, a śmierć. Dosięgła ona męża Suzanne (Andie MacDowell) oraz ojca dwóch dorosłych synów - Nicholasa i Chrisa. Żałoba po stracie kogoś bliskiego przechodzi w pewnym momencie w próbę ułożenia sobie życia na nowo. Zarówno przez kobietę, jak i dwóch neurotycznych mężczyzn. Nie jest to jednak łatwe nawet na przestrzeni kilku lat, bo w takim horyzoncie czasowym tę historię przedstawia Harbaugh. Stajemy się świadkami nieudanych związków, bolesnych rozstań, niespełnionych zawodowych ambicji, zupełnie jakbyśmy zasiadali z bohaterami przy jednym stole.
