Fates Warning and Arch/Matheos guitarist Jim Matheos has teamed up with vocalist Steve Overland, who has sang with various British groups through the years, notably FM and Wildlife, to form Kings of Mercia.

The roots of Kings of Mercia are nestled in Matheos' desire to strip away preconceived notions and let the music come to him naturally. But the melodic hard rock style found on "Wrecking Ball" intrigued him, and as Matheos notes, "It's our first record, so there was nothing to measure it against or expectations to live up to, even if only in my own head."
