Although the passionate performer writes and sings about sometimes rocky-roads, he takes any disillusionment and channels it into love and hope on these new songs, hence the title 'Upward." On songs like "5 Nichols and A Hummingbird", "Bitter Wind", "House of Cards" and "Songs for the Restless" Hobbs self-reflection and humanity shines through. Songs like "Bound to Live" and the title track "Upward" are all about deliverance and self-freedom. About the song "Bound to live" Hobbs says "is that rally cry within yourself to get off your ass and move. I had been stuck in a place for so long with my music and my life where I was unable to get out of a rut. I didn't believe in myself. With the dopplereffekt of whizzing cars still lingering in the memory from his Lay-By Lullaby [2014] CD for 12k, his latest effort offers a firm reminder of Schaeffer's elusive, rarified compositional brilliance and knack for weaving unexpected and fascinating layers of detail into his work. If anything it's arguably his master opus. Bravo! "Glitter in my tears' marks the 20th anniversary of Janek Schaefer's career as a recording artist, having now released 30 albums. His music is best comprehended through examining his time as an architect, and how that forged his innate sense for constructing tactile atmospheres, that navigate through unknown structures and forgotten spaces, creating profound new places. Over his career he has placed focus on the relationship between body, medium, and sound, creating a field of work that defies easy definition. An architect of foundsoundscapes. For Schaefer, the medium plays as great a role as the message itself. He creates music that exposes the marks and memories of a variety of media, as presented in the 26 tracks on 'Glitter in my tears', an eclectic album that celebrates the sense of overwhelming desolation held in the music. A subdued cathartic opus. Each piece is a microcosm of haunted memory, that unites to create a record of melancholic vignettes, and is easily his most critical recorded work to date. It's a record that reflects Schaefer's obsession with texture, atmosphere, and emotive acoustic states. Multiple interludes, like active memories, lace into one another. Their relation is temporal, and shaped very much by the settings in which they are encountered. The two-voice-per-part choir configuration is not to everyone's taste, with some preferring a single-voice madrigal-like texture and others a sound rooted in the long English choral tradition. The mix of pieces on this volume, which veers from English-language anthems to Anglican service music to somber Latin pieces (mostly written, nevertheless, for the Protestant Elizabeth I); some might rather have music more closely linked to its original setting and function. The singers' judicious use of vibrato might be too much for some, too little for others. About the basic musicality of the program's central music, however, there ought to be very little dispute: the two sets of Lamentations of Jeremiah at the beginning are extraordinarily powerful. The ornate settings of the Hebrew initial letters ("Aleph," Beth") and the broader passages toward the end of each Lamentation are handled with a rare combination of emotion and iron control by the singers, and the experience of hearing these dark, low-register works is gripping. By the time they're over with, the more compact pieces on the remainder of the program will come as a kind of relief. Superbly resonant, acoustically appropriate sound from Fitzalan Chapel at Arundel Castle adds to the power of the music. "Fast Train," their first hit, appeared in 1971, the same year as the self-titled debut album. Jimmy Henman left soon after and was replaced by Jimmy Clench. The next year brought the band's first Canadian number one single, "You Could Have Been a Lady," from On Record. David and Ritchie Henman left before the next album, Electric Jewels, could be recorded; they were replaced by Jerry Mercer and Gary Moffet. After April Wine Live (1974) and Stand Back (1975), Steve Lang replaced Clench, who left to join Bachman-Turner Overdrive and later Loverboy. In 1976, The Whole World's Goin' Crazy became the first Canadian album to go platinum and their resulting tour was the first to gross one million dollars. Forever for Now appeared in 1976, followed by April Wine Live at the El Mocambo in 1977. Guitarist Brian Greenway was added that same year, making the band a sextet. After 1978's First Glance and 1979's Harder...Faster, "Just Between You and Me" became April Wine's biggest U.S. hit. The single (one of three Top 40 American singles by the band) propelled 1981's Nature of the Beast to platinum record status. Power Play followed in 1982, and 1984's Animal Grace was their last album. Myles Goodwyn recorded his first self-titled solo album in 1988. Four years later, all the original members regrouped for a Canadian tour, which convinced them to resume recording. As with the other solo albums, Cooper does the artwork for the album. Her delicate yet disturbing pen and watercolor creations are the perfect accompaniment to her songs, as though they've emerged from the same troubled dreams. Though understated, a sense of urgency permeates this record. Cooper's voice dances through the songs with a chameleon quality that's sultry and commanding on ''In Spite of Doom'' and desperate, vulnerable and sharp on ''Can't Play'' and ''Everlasting Arms.'' Her lyrics contain the weariness of giving in to a love requited, and the unsettling realities of maintaining that love. In some pieces it seems she no longer knows where to direct her endless yearning. She observes on ''Bad Timing Pt. 2'': ''Two boats they don't meet up in the night, they glide by each other and forever out of sight... they might just be the lucky ones.'' The spookiness of Cooper's sound a sound influential in some of The Sandwitches' best songs like ''Joe Says'' and ''In the Garden'' is still present here and especially on the darker second side. Piercing guitars and heartbeat drums on ''Everlasting Arms'' warn that ''something's growing in the basement'' and something comes ''from within.'' The recording quality of this release is raw but it is far from being a ''garage record.''
