My foolish heart Washington's Columbia material wasn't quite as rapturous as his landmark records from the '70s (most notably Inner City Blues and Mister Magic), which minted the template for the smooth jazz. But Prime Cuts offers a concise yet comprehensive overview of a surprisingly adventurous period in the soulful saxophonist's career, which was tragically cut short by his death at age 56 in late 1999. There are classic Washington grooves like "Strawberry Moon" and his version of Brubeck's "Take Five," both songs showcasing his luminescent tone and sinuous inflections. "Only for You" and "Summer Nights" pour soothing horn phrases over lively percussion, while "Blues for D.P." puts Washington in a more straightforward, postbop setting with Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, and Grady Tate. Of the three previously unissued tracks, "Heat Index," suffers from a stilted arrangement and not enough bottom-tone organ; a new rendition of "Soulful Strut" is marvelous but only marginally different than the original; and "The Night Fantastic" is a relatively standard workout enhanced by Washington's dulcet modulations and quickly punctuated crescendoes. But tenor saxophonist Gregory Tardy not only embraces his Christian upbringing but devotes this entire CD to music that has lifted up his life. Starting with a powerful rendition of the late Rev. James Cleveland's "Christ the Redeemer," Tardy preaches through his majestic horn, with superb backing from pianist Xavier Davis. The influence of John Coltrane is unmistakable in the passionate take of the spiritual "Lord Revive Us" (though Coltrane never recorded, or likely performed this piece), which adds guest trumpeter Philip Dizack and alto saxophonist Riley Bandy. He also explores works by modern composers, including Sharp Radway's snappy "Holy Ghost Fall on Me" and jazz pianist/bandleader Eric Reed's heartfelt miniature "He Cares," the latter an intimate duet by Tardy on clarinet with Davis. The guests are also present on a foot-tapping arrangement of the spiritual "Jordan River" and "Remember Me." If the music in churches would swing as hard as Gregory Tardy's band on this session, attendance would likely improve. Have no fear, most of these songs still bring the slurry wobble most people love about the Big Easy, but there's a self-deprecation to these lyrics and enough dark imagery to make sure you take Osborne seriously. Whether he turns into Townes Van Zandt (hopefully), or Bob Seger (hopefully not), remains to be seen. This is a snapshot of an artist discovering himself. Very good in its own right, it leads one to believe the next record just might be a classic. Rabbit Hole 6:08 When I'm looking for peace and tranquillity, I head for the forest, or for the shore, or for any environment that hasn't been completely dominated and subdued by human invention and industry. Yet when I arrive there, I'm quick to discover that this supposedly tranquil idyll is anything but; instead, it's a constantly changing world of sound, movement, light, smells, and weather. Strangely, this tumult doesn't stop me from finding the peace I'm looking for - in fact, it often seems a necessary condition for it. I can take hold of a moment - the colour of a leaf, the smell of damp soil - knowing that its sudden intensity will soon give way to something else, to boredom and to the next unfolding experience. I sometimes come across this apparent paradox in music, too: in order to truly savour a moment (a timbre, a harmonic colour), I have to accept that it's only a moment (rhythm, structure). This happy contradiction is writ large across Sarah Louise's new album, the twelfth in a series of solo acoustic guitar recordings from label Vin Du Select Qualitite. Louise gets stunning tones and timbres from her twelve-string guitar (Volume 12, twelve strings, geddit?), but these rich notes and chords are swept up in leaping, tumbling melodic refrains. Each note is perfectly incomplete, looking forwards to the next one to complete it. This is music as a riverine flow, a fast-moving stream sometimes stumbling over itself in its eagerness to hurry on down the hill towards the valley. Repetition is a sort of exuberance in the act of vanishing, a joy most apparent in the glimmering drive of 'Late April'. Though this vital movement can be heard in every track on the album, it's by far the only event happening in this densely-woven twelve-string world. The tension and anxiety of 'Evidence of a Bear', the sense of being watched by unseen eyes (or smelt by unseen nose), contrasts with the languid floating of 'Floating Rhododendron'. The dark drama of 'Scarab' seems to come to a tragic conclusion, its storytelling replete with dramatic pauses and shifts in register. But it's to the woods and mountains and streams that the album constantly turns, not by way of mimicry or simple evocation, but more like an aural memory of being there (even though I've never been there before - there being, perhaps, the Blue Ridge Mountains near Louise's home in North Carolina, or maybe some other place that exists only in the music).
