The lyrics were passed on to Mike after Byrd's death by a mutual friend and Big Mike recorded the song in his memory. Additional tracks include "Iron City Blues" and "Shoal Creek", which are from, and inspired by, the award-winning documentary "Iron City Blues". A "must have" for Big Mike fans!! When I was asked to write some liner notes for Big Mike Griffin's new album, "All My Runnin'", I was tickled to death. I've been friends with Big Mike for years and here was my chance to talk about the man I call the best Biker Blues guitar player in the world. Believe me, I know the blues. As a young musician, I played drums for the great, Jimmy Reed. You know, there's a reason we call Big Mike, "Big" Mike. Now, I am not a little guy but Mike Griffin dwarfs me. At nearly 7 feet tall, he makes his Fender Telecaster look like a ukulele. Now pay attention to what I am about to tell you. As a fan of Big Mike, I knew I would love his new album but it surpassed all my expectations. Right off the bat you are treated to Iron City, a song that Mike wrote for a documentary film called Iron City Blues. This song is the true story of Iron City, TN. You don't want to go there alone. I'm Gonna Take My Troubles, Buried Alive In The Blues and You Wouldn'tUnderstand are exactly what I expect from Big Mike Griffin, BIKER BLUES. While truckin' down the highway, these songs make my head bob forward and backward to that drivin' beat. I don't even realize I'm speeding. I loved Use Me. Because of my being a drummer, I like that percussive funky feel. Too dang cool. Shade Tree Mechanic gave me that classic blues shuffle. Somebody's GotTo Go transported me to the cotton fields of the Mississippi Delta and back to a time that would have been the birth of the blues. I am a sucker for a good slide guitar and that makes me a sucker for Big Mike Griffin. Shoal Creek sounds dangerous to me. It took me back to Iron City, a dangerous place and All My Runnin' showed me a side of Big Mike that I had never seen before. There is a strong Bob Dylan influence from the 60's. I should know because I was the original drummer with Bob on his very first electric world tour in 1966. It's pretty much the same on a record and "Put It In Dirt" is no different. The blues man from California has lived in a world of music all his life, playing with countless great acts and carving his own name on the blues rock vine. The opener "Goin' Up The Mountain" is an electric blues tune, bursting with energy and fronted by that well known gruff-tone Sweetwater voice. The band was formed in 2012 with the purpose of making some truly engaging blues music. It's a good start. "Anna Lee" tones it down. It's almost a blues ballad that's been ripped straight out of the '60s, horn section and all. Sweetwater certainly has a beast of a vocal box, but his ability to also produce a soulful melody really benefits the dynamic of the album. As a whole, this album would sit as a high-energy mash up of soulful electric blues. It plays like a live show and shows the experience behind the band. What he does as a songwriter and performer is what people like to call Americana these days - a hard term to define as it seems to mean different things depending on who you're talking to. But if to you it means original songs, well constructed and well performed, in some of the various musical idioms that originated in the USA - blues, jazz, folk and roots - and also interpreting the work of other writers in these genres with depth and feeling, then you should check out his work if you haven't already. Over the last few years he has laid claim to a unique niche on the Blues 'n' Roots scene in the UK and European Continent, from small clubs and theatres to festivals. His two recent solo albums received a warm welcome in the Blues 'n' Roots reviews, a third album was released in 2008 to great acclaim from reviewers and audiences alike. When travelling light, he performs in stripped down acoustic mode either on his own, or accompanied by bass or keyboards. At many UK gigs he appears with the Guy Tortora Band, his own four-piece outfit of accomplished musicians from the UK and Europe. With this band he has performed live with artists as diverse as Eric Clapton, Pee Wee Ellis, John Cleary and Eric Bibb. Guy is a guitar player of some accomplishment. On both acoustic and electric guitars he plays finger style, and is a fine bottleneck and slide player.
