After the project was finished, it was shelved, and somehow didn't find its proper way out into the world until now. This recording showcases Kronstadt's writing and singing. It is also brilliant drummer Gary Novak's first ever record date, as well as the incredible flautist Steve Fowler's last, after having been diagnosed with ALS, and since passing away from that horrific disease. Crazy What begins, surprisingly, in a bit of a whimper ends up resembling something akin to the name Frantic Rockers and their 'Savage Beat'. Having not had the pleasure of witnessing Frantic Rockers in a live scenario, one suspects that their brand of wild rock 'n' roll, with a heavy dose of the blues, is a force to be reckoned with when up on stage. In terms of their current issue out on Rhythm Bomb Records, the opening trio of 'I Wanna Boogie', 'Hoodoman Blues' and 'Rolling Stone' remain a bit tepid in the sound department and give the impression of a band warming up before all cylinders are fully firing. Once that torch paper is lit, however, then some serious rockin' action begins and starting with use of the harmonica during 'Crying and Pleading', which is supported by vocalist Jesse's persuasive delivery. With the harmonica warming up during the former song, it is red hot by the time it gets to the absolutely flyin' 'All Through The Night', with Jesse getting in to his stride and keeping tabs with the scorchin' rhythm. The Frantic Rockers is definitely a tight unit musically, but they also possess an important ingredient in vocalist Jesse as this frontman has the ability to possess songs with a raw and domineering voice that steers such examples as 'Rumours' and 'Howling', but also add a touch of variety by breaking into spoken word passages during opener, 'I Wanna Boogie'. Initially, the project served as songwriter Aaron Kyle's outlet for songs that didn't fit the sound of his rock band, Le Switch. When that outfit disbanded in 2012, Kyle turned his focus to Geronimo Getty, penning songs inspired by the directness he heard on records by Lucinda Williams, Steve Earle, Guy Clark, and John Prine. "They're song people," Kyle says. "They write stories about people's lives, their own lives. Those are the people that I tend to gravitate towards." As for the people Kyle sings about on Geronimo Getty's full-length debut, Greyhound Blues, they're troubled, lost, and possibly murderous. Fittingly, Kyle and his compatriots -- Christopher Harrison, Seb Bailey, Brian Soika, and Valerie McCann- soundtrack their stories with reckless force. The finished touches are melodic and twangy, but there's always an underlying urgency, captured mostly live by producer Jeff Halbert (Nick Cave, St. Vincent, Rickie Lee Jones). It's the sound of "four or five guys in one room, hashing it out, making it happen," Kyle says explaining the rangy, roughly polished sound of terse rockers like "Mr. Jones," the pedal steel and Telecaster-driven shuffle of "Dancing in the Moonlight," creeping, distorted pickers like "Devil's Theft" and Kyle's unabashedly romantic cover of Guy Clark's "Anyhow I Love You." Closing the record felt like "a classic country move," Kyle bemuses. A loose concept album telling the story of a man easily given to violence, Greyhound Blues also finds slight glimmers of hope. The album will be accompanied by videos for each song, directed/produced by a slate of emerging independent filmmakers like Ruben Anders (Strutter), Dominic Ciccodicola (Top Chef, Project Runway), Bryan Kamer & Craig Bauer (Presence), Ashley Kramer (Drifter Pictures), Diane Zilliox and Jay Bennett (Whisker Wars), Dave Merson-Hess (stop motion animaton), and veterans like Allison Anders (Grace of My Heart, Gas, Food, Lodging), Tom Provost (The Presence), Travis Flornoy (Thank You for Judging), Ryan Jackson-Healy (Random Acts of Violence), Aris Blevins (Suspension), all evoking Kyle's cinematic inspirations: the contrasting placid and foreboding vibes of David Lynch, the voodoo noir of True Detective, and existential travelogs like Two-Lane Blacktop and Paris, Texas. While her first few albums set the stage for her as a dancefloor diva to be reckoned with, their busy -- and somewhat gimmicky -- production values often cluttered her style. Here, producer and arranger Simon Boswell pinpoints a nice tone of understatement that fits the chanteuse like a glove. Highlights lie in the sly, mid-tempo piece "Don't Ask Me Why"; the catchy, glowing "Nobody but Me"; and the soothing closing ballad "Once Again," to name a few. The obligatory Donna Summer-esque dance number is "Working Late Tonight," and it's memorable for a plentiful supply of dramatic orchestration and off-kilter lines like, "While you give her three wishes/I'm busy washin' pots and pans." But it's primarily the ballads and low-key numbers here that do the trick. Released by RCA's Italian arm only in Europe, Amii Stewart is a solid collector's item worth seeking for any fan of the singer's lovely voice. Benson's and Cole's careers are remarkably similar, both becoming known first as instrumentalists, Cole as a pianist, and Benson, of course, as a guitarist, with both eventually easing into the pop mainstream because of their voices. Cole was a one of a kind vocalist, of course, and even Benson wouldn't claim to equal him as a singer, but Benson has a similarly soothing and lush tenor voice that more than holds its own on these familiar songs. The album is bookended by two versions of the Cole classic "Mona Lisa," the first a rare recording of Benson at the age of eight singing it sweetly and charmingly while playing ukulele, while the album closes with a full big-band, Nelson Riddle-arranged orchestral version that also features some sweet guitar from Benson. In between are warm, smooth, and soothing versions of "Walking My Baby Back Home" and "I'm Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter," a bouncing and bopping "Route 66," and nice takes on "Unforgettable" (featuring Wynton Marsalis), "When I Fall in Love" (featuring Idina Menzel), "Smile" (featuring Till Br??nner), and "Too Young" (featuring Judith Hill), all given the full big-band orchestral treatment from the Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra conducted by Randy Waldman (Waldman also arranged several of the pieces here).
