Her fifth solo outing, Tales from the Austin Hotel, recorded with members of Stevie Ray Vaughan's band, Double Trouble, received a W.C. Handy award nomination. Love the Game, released in 2001, featured members of her touring band and was produced by Duke Robillard. A native of Los Angeles, Davies inherited her musical skills from her father, who wrote arrangements for Ray Charles and worked in the recording studio with Frank Sinatra and Pearl Bailey. Performing in rock and blues bands in the San Francisco area in the early '80s, she returned to southern California in 1984. After honing her talents as lead guitarist for Maggie Mayall & the Cadillacs, Davies was recruited to play with Albert Collins & the Icebreakers in 1988. She remained with the group for three years. Touring with Fingers Taylor & the Ladyfinger Revue during the summer of 1991, Davies opened numerous shows for Taylor's employer, Jimmy Buffett. Davies continues to play occasional sessions. Her 1997 album, I've Got That Feeling, featured duets with blues guitarists Tab Benoit and Montoya. Recorded at the storied venue that's become Hersch's second home, Sunday Night at the Vanguard unfolds with all the dramatic intensity and narrative drive that make his performances a revelatory experience. Ebulliently playful and ravishingly lyrical, rhythmically elastic and harmonically exploratory, the trio plays with an extraordinary level of trust, assurance, high-wire poise and musicality throughout the set. "The thing that's beautiful about Eric is his touch," Hersch says. "He's the straight man and John is the loose guy, though sometimes they reverse it." Hersch quickly gained recognition as a superlative band-mate, performing and recording with masters such as Stan Getz, Joe Henderson, Billy Harper, Lee Konitz, Art Farmer, Gary Burton, Toots Thielemans, and many others. This is an excellent set that was inspired by the works of Russian filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky. Weiss' pieces relate to images and emotional textures, while his versatile storytelling contains a combination of dynamics, colors, and moods. As the leader of the New Jazz Composers Octet, Weiss has built a solid reputation for his ability to evoke memorable performances from his solid sextet of Xavier Davis, Marcus Strickland, Myron Walden, Dwayne Burno, and E.J. Strickland. The set opens with the energetic "Stalker," a straight-ahead burner that features Weiss' excellent chops out front over a blazing drum line and steady piano beat. Strickland takes over with a multifaceted tenor saxophone solo that documents his exceptional skills. Strickland has definitely evolved, and his explosion of musical colors is a solid and worthy improvisation. "The Mirror" is nearly 11 minutes long and reflects many of the dynamics inherent in Weiss' amazing writing and instrumental influences. His strong melodic sense is both evolved and complex but highly entertaining. Davis offers a great piano solo that extends into free jazz territory; however, the melodic structure never strays too far to be disruptive or atonal. "Mr. Jin," written by Wayne Shorter, features Weiss collaborating with the inimitable Nasheet Waits on drums, Craig Handy on tenor sax, Steve Davis on trombone, and Norbert Stachel on bari sax and bass clarinet.
