Share (2:39) Tri-state denizen Chaz DePaolo definitely has a great work ethic, and through his constant stream of gigs and tours he has developed a massive set of blues and rock guitar chops as well as a healthy stage presence as a killer frontman. His talent has earned him not only the respect of fans and music critics, but also with fellow musicians, and he has played with legendary cats including Buddy Miles, Little Milton, Kim Wilson, Jose Feliciano, David Maxwell, and Blue Lou Marini. Chaz has released a handful of albums as well as a live concert DVD, and all of them are very good. His fifth release is Resolution Blues: An Acoustic Blues Journey, which was recorded on February 20th of last year (his mom's 80th birthday, by the way) at Showplace Studios in Dover, New Jersey. DePaolo laid down the vocal and guitar tracks, and he was joined by members of his usual band, including Hank Kaneshige on bass, Cliff McComas on drums, and Rob Chaseman on the sax. Prestine Allen worked the piano on this one, and executive producer David Biondo brought his harp along with him from Colorado. Resolution Blues includes ten songs, all originals that were written by Chaz, and most of the tracks were recorded in one take. There is a definite "Live show" vibe to the proceedings, and DePaolo converses a bit with the listeners and the band members as things move along. The first song in the queue is "A Love So Strong" and many listeners will be hearing this man on an acoustic guitar for the first time. This is a fundamental change as this time he has to rely mostly on his voice to lead the band, and the void left by his electric guitar is ably filled by Allen's piano and Chaseman's sax; these guys works together marvelously! The lack of heroic guitar solos also leads to shorter tracks, and in this set they all come in around three or four minutes long. Chaz does get to stretch his legs a little on the title track, as he really digs into the guitar on "Resolution Blues," a song of hope and change. Though it is a blues song at heart, Prestine's piano improvisations give it a bit of a jazz vibe over the bouncing beat of Kaneshige's earthy-sounding bass. DePaolo also tears up the guitar part on "I'm Not Angry Anymore" and you will hear that he has an amazing touch on the fretboard. The listener gets a history lesson from "Gunther 414" which runs down Robert Johnson's legendary recording session in room 414 at this storied San Antonio hotel, though I think Chaz might be a little off on the spelling. Biondo adds a very tasty harmonica part to this tune, as well as to one of the standout tracks on Resolution Blues, "Angel on My Shoulder." This is a song DePaolo wrote in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, and it has such a positive vibe about getting right with the world that it is hard not to smile while listening it. The set finishes up with "Share" and there is only Chaz and his guitar. There are no solos to be found here, just a driving vamp and the man's soulful voice. This is a song about trying to be "honest with yourself and others," a lesson we should all keep in mind, and a good message to end with. DePaolo obviously put a lot of work into writing these songs, as they all have well thought out lyrics and they are very slick. On the first listen it may seem that there is not much variety in the sound, which is one of the dangers of going acoustic and recording the songs back-to-back. You Better Go Now Octogenarian saxophonist Charlie Mariano has spent a lifetime blurring boundaries. One of the few remaining witnesses of the bebop era, he has spent the early part of his career in that arena. In the mid-'60s he began experimenting with fusion, recording arguably his best work in that genre with bassist Eberhard Weber's groundbreaking Colours band in the '70s. Throughout he has had a passion for music of other cultures, spending time in India learning the nadhaswaram, a South Indian wind instrument. His immersion in Indian culture is well-documented on the '83 ECM recording Jyothi. In recent years, however, he has become more associated with the mainstream, although his broader interests never seem to be far away. With Not Quite a Ballad he marks another achievement'a recording with a concert orchestra'and the result combines the expected with an element of pure surprise. Along with the Wurtzburger Philharmonic, under the direction of conductor Jonathan Seers, Mariano is supported by New on the Corner, a trio consisting of pianist Bernard Pichl, double-bassist Rudi Engel and drummer Bill Elgart. While both the orchestra and the trio deliver everything that is expected of them and more, this is really Mariano's show and he is understandably front and centre for its majority. An adaptation of Albinoni's "Adagio" is a fitting introduction, reflecting Mariano's Italian roots. Another classical reworking, that of the aria "Vesti la Giubba" from Leoncavallo's I, Pagliacci , demonstrates how Mariano can deliver an interpretation that is dramatic without being melodramatic. His rich tone and invention permeate both pieces. The orchestration is lush without being cloying; sentimental without being syrupy. Four pieces for Mariano with New on the Corner alone highlight Mariano's sense of adventure, even within a mainstream context. The title track is aptly named; the melody would lend itself to being a ballad if it weren't for the more medium-tempo swing of the rhythm section. Mariano's tone is strong and expressive; age seems to be doing nothing to diminish his power. The highlight of the album is clearly Indian composer Ramamani's "Yagapriya," where the orchestra comfortably navigates the microtonal nature of Indian music. The first half is a free improvisation, or tampura, by Mariano over the orchestra's changing "bordun" form; the second, in 7/4 time, is structured around a single scale, but Peter Fulda's orchestration again creates a broad sense of drama that is exhilarating without being overstated. The marriage of jazz soloists and orchestras can be risky. The inherent structure required of the orchestra can detract from the spirited improvisational nature of the soloist. Thankfully, in this case, Mariano and orchestrator Fulda understand the intentions and requirements of both soloist and orchestra, creating an amalgam which successfully brings out the strengths of both. Strawberries And Cream Al Basile started out as a poet and fiction writer, but a meeting with Duke Robillard (who produced this CD) changed his life. He became a trumpet player in Roomful of Blues, then went on to gigs with Joe Turner, Red Prysock, and other soul and blues heavies. Since the '70s he's been a regular co-writer with Robillard, while on his own he placed a tune on Ruth Brown's Grammy-nominated album R+B = Ruth Brown. As a leader, he's cut jazz, soul, and blues albums, with The Tinge falling into the latter category. Robillard's production, as is his wont, gives the music a clean, wide-open feeling, allowing each instrument room to breathe. Basile has a mellow, midrange tenor, with a classic crooner's phrasing, and brings plenty of humor to his vocals. The innuendo-rich "Too Slow" is done in the style of Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson, with Basile paying tribute to Vinson with his vocal phrasing. Robillard drops in a mellow solo, Basile blows some nice muted cornet, and Bruce Katz, who is inspired throughout the session, tickles the ivories. "While We're Dancing" is a classic saloon song, done with a tip of the hat to Louis Armstrong. "I want to hold you while we're dancing," Basile sings from the viewpoint of an older gentleman who still has romance in his soul. It's a beautiful, slow ballroom groove and Basile's trumpet solo makes it one of the album's highlights. On "Airlift My Heart" Basile delivers a fluttering cornet solo to complement a tune that likens a cold heart to the Cold War. Katz plays some bluesy electric piano and the horn section simmers quietly. "Can I Trust You with a Kiss?" brings to mind a meeting of New Orleans R&B and Memphis soul with a simple I-IV-V progression, a poignant vocal from Basile, and sanctified keyboard work from Katz. "You're Still Right" is a gritty, swampy putdown with a sneering vocal from Basile, Robillard's greasy slide guitar, and Katz getting all funky on piano. In that time, he's remained below the radar yet been sideman and guitarist with many influential giants of US popular music. This is a guy who was a soul mate of Otis Redding in the 60s; he shimmied with Solomon Burke and Eddie Floyd; worked with Stevie Wonder (when he was still 'Little Stevie') and many of the soul music dynasty while developing his own sound, reflected in this excellent ten track album. Strange Love has that full-on Stax sound: rounded Horns; crisp guitar work seamlessly merged with soulful, rocking vocals. Roberts wrote all of the material here, and it is a tribute to his ability and undoubted talent. With 'Strange Love', Roy Roberts shows he is still firmly rooted in the Deep South but has shaken himself free of his long passed and more successful musical buddies to emerge triumphantly from the shadows. He's had a storied career, backing the likes of Robert Nighthawk, but didn't release his first solo album until the '90s. However, this disc should garner him a new audience, since among the friends helping him out here are Peter Buck, Barrett Martin, and Scott McCaughey, who all have their own histories and bring a touch of Seattle to his Delta blues. However, they're more than happy to remain in the background -- this is Davis' disc, after all, and he makes the most of it, letting his guitar loose frequently with the trademark wobbly slide notes, but also singing up a storm, as a few old buddies give a raw core of support behind him. It's a glorious, defiant celebration of Mississippi blues, recalling Muddy Waters more than, say, Junior Kimbrough in the deep Delta mud that sticks around greasy tracks like "Pay to Play" or the closing instrumental "Hold Me Baby." As the between-song patter shows, Davis is a warm, funny man with a host of stories, and that warmth comes through in his songs; he has the blues, but they're not going to kill him. This is a disc that's a pleasure. Taylor's high-energy atonalism fit in well with the free jazz of the period but he was actually leading the way rather than being part of a movement. In fact, this septet outing with trumpeter Eddie Gale, altoist Jimmy Lyons, Ken McIntyre (alternating between alto, oboe and bass clarinet), both Henry Grimes and Alan Silva on basses, and drummer Andrew Cyrille is quite stunning and very intense.
