The 3rd Sound [00:06:08] Drummer Bobby Kapp, free jazz spirit in New York in the mi-sixties, relocated to Mexico City, to the Artists' colony San Miguel de Allede. But he gets around, and on a return to New York he joined pianist Matthew Shipp to record a terrific set of duo improvisations called Cactus. Shipp, the better-known half of the team, plays with a vehemence that parallels his public persona-a prickly, chip-on-the-shoulder, in-your-face approach, a sort of Randy Weston meets Cecil Taylor to and rub elbows with Bud Powell-if Powell had played with serious attitude. Kapp, for his part, rumbles and rolls, he whispers and shuffles. He rat-ta-tats to make you break into a dance step, and sometimes he stomps, and he may be the most simpatico band mate Shipp has ever worked with. Shipp is prolific. His Wikipedia page list five releases in 2015, and they probably missed a couple. Kapp has available recordings with his Fine Wine Trio, a collaboration with free jazz saxophonist Noah Howard, and his 2015 offering, Cilia Sin Embargo (Self Produced). Cactus opens with the eight and half minute "Overture," a frenetic improvisation full of angles, and a momentum that waxes and wanes. Shipp leaves more space than he normally does. He seems to search, discover, then explore new tangents. His normal percussive approach is leaner, crisper, as Kapp lays down a tight weave of textures. "Before" sounds composed. Shipp's left hands plays walking bass to Kapp's bright cymbal splashes. Kapp-like Billy Mintz and the late Paul Motian-is a rare drum kit poet. His melodic intro to "Money" is a divinely masterful ninety seconds, leading into Shipp's discombobulation of notes that gels into a compelling, light-stepping beauty. Everything meshed on this set. Early in her childhood, she was exposed to family jam sessions where the guitars, accordions, spoons, violins and pianos played in harmony, while the singers kept those dancers going until the sun rises. Her dad was the lead singer of three French Canadian bands. She vividly remembers hearing Buck Owen or Chet Atkins's songs play on her daddy's 8 tracks player, in his garage. She loved it! She wasn't even 10 and she already knew that she, too, would eventually be a musician. She now writes her own songs and plays piano, guitar & harmonica. Life events took her to Massachusetts in 2005, where she fell even more for the American Country music culture. She travelled to Nashville enough times to know that she could live there. The rockabilly influence from Memphis and the Sun Studio, the country feel of Nashville, mixed with her Cajun roots inspired her to write english songs, which was new to her, as she was raised in a French speaking home. She performed in Old Quebec City from 1997 to 1999, at the "Voutes de Napoleon", a folklore bar located on "Grande-Allee". In 2010, she performed a Tribute to Johnny Cash and June Carter. Her sparkly personality on stage resembles June's traits of character. She is most inspired by female artists like Miranda Lambert, Brandy Clark, Julie Roberts, Jennifer Nettles, Norah Jones and Reba McEntire. Vicky is currently impersonating the legends of June Carter, Tammy Wynette, Loretta Lynn & Jessi Colter as part of the "CASH IS KING" Tribute Band and the "Songs of The Grand Ole Opry" Show. Finding themselves delving deeper into the realm of Americana, this led to somewhat of a departure from their trademark soulful, rock n' roll sound. Excited about the new material and this new course the band was on, it was time to record a new record showcasing the maturation of The Broadcast's sound. The search for the perfect producer to capture this new sound was a short one. With limited expectations of a returned phone call, the band first reached out to their dream producer, multi-grammy winner Jim Scott, who was personally responsible for some of their favorite records (Tedeschi Trucks Band, Wilco, Tom Petty, Rolling Stones, etc). They were overjoyed to hear back from Jim Scott's manager the following day saying that Jim was extremely interested in producing the band's next record. After months of planning, workshopping and writing songs, and rehearsing, the band flew to LA during the summer of 2015 to record the songs with Jim Scott that would soon come to be known as "From the Horizon." With a release in the Spring of 2015, The Broadcast has big expectations for "From the Horizon," and rightfully so. While still firmly rooted in the trademark soulful rock n' roll sound as heard on the leadoff track "Steamroller," their growth as a band is most evident in such tracks as "On the Edge" and "Eyes of a Woman." You'll re-encounter old friends from previous volumes, and make some new ones among the previously unissued and unknown artists. The breadth of repertoire ranges from the blasting, guitar-driven jump blues of the Felix Gross Orchestra to the cool, Charles Brown-influenced cocktail R&B of Billy Williams (not the Charioteers man), with stops along the way to take in Modern's attempts to find their own Amos Milburn (Herb Fisher and the completely unknown Walter Smith) and Dinah Washington (Little Esther). Among other old friends we're pleased to welcome back the Three Bits Of Rhythm, Pearl Traylor and Happy Johnson, all of whom return by genuine popular demand. And those who've taken us to task for failing to reissue the masters of certain tracks that we've previously issued alternates of will be delighted to know that the Roy Hawkins and Jimmy Witherspoon tracks featured here are indeed the master takes - both making their first appearance on an Ace CD for the first time.
