Zigzagger Jazz trumpeter Takuya Kuroda is a forward-thinking musician with a bent toward mixing post-bop and adventurous soul-jazz. Born in Kobe, Japan, Kuroda followed his older trombonist brother into the local music scene, playing in big bands. After studying music in Japan, Kuroda relocated to Boston to attend the Berklee College of Music. While at Berklee, Kuroda befriended upcoming jazz vocalist Jos?? James, who invited Kuroda to record with him. Kuroda appeared on James' 2010 sophomore album, Blackmagic, and later on No Beginning No End -- for which he also wrote the horn arrangements. After leaving Berklee, Kuroda moved to New York City, where he enrolled at the New School's Jazz and Contemporary Music program, graduating in 2006. After graduating, Kuroda quickly ensconced himself in the vibrant N.Y.C. jazz scene, performing with such artists as Junior Mance, Greg Tardy, Andy Ezrin, Jiro Yoshida, Akoya Afrobeat, Valery Ponomarev's big band, and others. In 2011, Kuroda released the independently produced album Edge, followed by Bitter & High and Six Aces in 2012. In 2013, Kuroda signed with Blue Note Records and recorded his third solo album, the Jos?? James-produced Rising Son. Still Called The Blues 12. Homesick For The Road Homesick for the Road provides a showcase for three fine blues singer/guitarists. The recording is clean and crisp, as is typical of the Telarc label, and the music cooks from start to finish. This disc provides an excellent introduction to each performer, with ample opportunities for each to shine. Debbie Davies brings to mind Bonnie Raitt, with her appealing vocal timbre and bluesy delivery. The youthful Benoit sings with an authority beyond his 31 years, making Screamin' Jay Hawkins' classic "I Put a Spell on You" his own. Kenny Neal has the scruffy, soulful delivery of a man who knows what the blues are all about. His "I've Been Mistreated" sounds like a late '60s slice of Muscle Shoals soul. All three of the co-leaders are excellent guitarists, and the band is solid and tight. However, after weeks of recording, a fire destroyed the studio, the group's instruments - including Mills-Cockell's Moog Mark II - and the master tapes of the recordings for their new album. Undeterred, and with fundraising support from the Toronto musical community, the group purchased new instruments and pressed on to record the album. Long Lost Relatives was issued in 1971 on Finkelstein's True North label. The album included Mills-Cockell's Tillicum and the four Stringspace pieces (which, owing to the space restrictions of the LP medium, spanned both sides of the LP), rounded out by three additional Mills-Cockell compositions: Tumblers to the Vault, Better Deaf and Dumb from the First, and Aurora Spinray. Tillicum was also released as a single, and peaked at #38 on the Canadian charts in 1971. 2016: Tumblers from the Vault - the Reissued Recordings On August 24, 2016, RVNG Intl. announced the release of Tumblers from the Vault, a remastered collection including the entire released repertoire of Syrinx, together with previously-unreleased tracks, including the audio recording of the CBC Music to See performance of Stringspace. Aquarela Do Brasil There was something very special with the voice of this female singer when I first heard a couple songs from this album without knowing who she was. The swell honest phrasing, superb vocal control, not to mention the charm of execution in unison with a playful chic jazz guitarist. Surprising as it turned out that my unknown musicians are two famous Swedish artists; Sylvia Vrethammar and Rune Gustafsson. For international jazz enthusiasts who do not know these two excellent musicians, a little introduction; Sylvia Vrethammar is a singer of popular music, standards and jazz. She is best known for the 1974 song, "Y Viva Espa??a". It reached #4 in the UK Singles Chart in September 1974. Rune Gustafsson is a well-known jazz guitarist and composer, known for numerous recordings and concerts with the likes of Ed Thigpen, Putte Wickman, Arne Domn??rus, Jon Christensen, Kjell ??hman, Zoot Sims and Toots Thielemans. "Something My Heart Might Say" gives you the best of harmony vocals and guitar only, never gets boring even when the two are without any support from other instruments throughout the album and finally by a fine collection of musical gems from 'The Great American Songbook'. All the tunes you've heard before, but maybe not so naked and vulnerable as here when the nuances come out more clearly in a challenging format for the two musicians. All the 17 tunes running on the album are highlights; my personal picks for listening over-and-over again are the album title tune "Something My Heart Might Say", the seldom played "I'll Never Get Myself Another Face", Blossom Dearie's lovely "Sweet Georgie Fame" and finally Billy Joel's immortal "Just the Way You Are". Rune Gustafsson is the perfect partner for Sylvia Vrethammar on this album, an excellent accompanist and playful soloist in this challenging format. As always from Four Leaf Clover Records, sound quality is excellent and particularly the vocal recorded are of the highest audible quality. Almost three years later and over half a dozen releases on their label that time had come. The planets aligned and they began writing and recording their own record together. There is an implicit pun evoked in naming this release. The consistent stumbling block to recording together was variously their own records, a tour, someone else's record - never mind having a life. So when they found some time for R(est) n R(elaxtion) - what do they do? They make a record. Their passion and love for each other and music are the driving force in this trio. The name of their hometown and the patron Saint of Music, St. Cecilia helped to form the name of the band. As a trio, Sweet Cecilia has performed at various venues across South Louisiana. They have also performed at Festival International, Festival Acadiens et Creole, Crawfish Festival, and New Orleans Jazz Festival. Their dynamic family harmonies are evident at every performance. Sweet Cecilia released their self titled debut album in February 2015 featuring twelve original songs. It was recorded by Grammy Winner Joel Savoy. Sweet Cecilia is also featured on the Grammy nominated album "Light the Stars" by Bonsoir, Catin. Maegan, a member of Sweet Cecilia, is also a member of Grammy nominated group Bonsoir, Catin. During the 1990s he also released the albums Pianopieces (1992), a collaboration with percussionist Petur ??stlund; Duckwalk (1996), with the Steve Dobrogosz Quartet; Mass (1997), with St. Jacob's Chamber Choir; and Ebony Moon (1998), a solo piano collection.
