Little did the listeners of the six CD's in Rosemary Clooney: The Songbook Collection realize at the time of their release in 1979 and throughout the 1980's that a larger perspective enveloped the incremental growth of Clooney's discography focused on a single theme. Slowly but surely, Clooney, with her regular hornmen Scott Hamilton and Warren Vach??, built a true "songbook" that's unlike any other of the past few decades in its scope and consistency. The only other series of albums of the same inspiration and dedication in the second half of the twentieth century would be Ella Fitzgerald's classic Songbook tributes on Verve in the 1950's. Indeed, both singers honor many of the same songwriters. Under the auspices of Carl Jefferson and by extension the Concord Records he founded, Clooney not only revived her career after an unfortunate lull, but also she developed a series of albums, continuing even today, that distinguish her as one of the premier interpreters of standards. With an uncluttered and straightforward approach, Clooney has won the admiration of singers and jazz musicians. Her sure sense of swing and her no-nonsense approach, with little deviation from the lyrics that the masters wrote, have remained intact ever since she started singing with her sister in Tony Pastor's band in Kentucky. Her adherence to the original intentions of those song-writers and her implicit pulse, inspiring the musicians who accompany her, led Scott Hamilton to accurately note: "Her sense of time is as solid as Harry Edison's. Released with little fanfare on Steeplechase's Lookout strand back in June, Enchanted Sun has picked up precious few reviews. Maybe it is just the summer slumber. Let us hope so, for the debut recording from Israeli-born, New York-based guitarist Rotem Sivan and his trio deserves to get n.o.t.i.c.e.d. Unusually for a modern guitar-led album, there are no loops, no effects, no overdubs, no turntablists, no fusionism. There is nothing inherently wrong with any of those things (except fusionism, obviously). But how refreshing it is to hear classicism such as this. The first point of reference which suggests itself is the work of guitarist Johnny Smith on Roulette in the 1950s. Sivan favours radiant, upper register, single-note lines over Smith's lush, chorded treatments, but he casts the same ineffably romantic spell. The second point of reference is the trio clarinetist Jimmy Giuffre led at the 1958 Newport Festival (immortalised in the documentary film Jazz on a Summer's Day). The presence of guitarist Jim Hall in Giuffre's trio is incidental here; it is the buoyant, limber freshness of the trio's overall performance that resonates. Of the nine tracks on the album, only two are covers: George Gershwin's "How Long Has This Been Going On?" and Richard Rodgers' "Isn't It Romantic?" Eighty-one years after it was written, Rodgers' piece receives another definitive performance. The rest of the tunes were written by Sivan, who, more often than is decent for someone so young, approaches the same melodic heights as the composers of those two treasures from the standards repertoire. If you could hear a great perfume an understated dream weaver such as Guerlain's Apr?¨s l'Ond??e or L'Artisan Parfumeur's Timbuktu it would sound like this. Like those two olfactory masterpieces, Enchanted Sun is concerned with luminescence rather than impact, and the shimmer lingers long. A captivating debut. Brother Jack McDuff recorded an enormous number of albums during the '60s, so it can be difficult to figure out where to start digging a little deeper into his output (which Hammond B-3 fans will definitely want to do). 1967's Tobacco Road stands out from the pack for a couple of reasons. First, unlike many of his groove-centric albums, it's heavy on standards and pop/rock tunes (seven of nine cuts), which make for excellent matches with McDuff's highly melodic, piano-influenced style. Jackson, including a soulful horn section that sounds straight out of Memphis or Muscle Shoals (though this was recorded at Chess studios in Chicago). McDuff himself handles the arrangements on the rest of the material, which is done in a guitar/sax/drums quartet. The LP's style is fairly unified, though - no matter what format, the tunes are given fantastically funked-up treatments that sound surprisingly natural. And these aren't grooves where everyone just settles back and stays in the pocket; McDuff attacks the arrangements with wildly funky rhythms and solos, and there's a polyrhythmic sense of interplay that recalls the best Southern soul. Arguably the most distinctive track is a cool, grooving quartet version of "The Shadow of Your Smile," complete with snaky bassline and airy flute solos from Danny Turner.
