St. Louis Blues 'Mainstream Giants of Jazz' sees two of the great tenor sax stylists and a marvellous rhythm section brought together, with everyone given the opportunity to fly in various combinations, from solo piano to the full ensemble. American tenor wizard Scott Hamilton shares top billing with Danny Moss and a first choice rhythm section. Sadly, shortly after making this recording Danny succumbed to cancer, thus making the album a fitting tribute to a much-loved man and highly-respected musician. The programme consists mainly of standards with a fairly equal mixture of swingers and ballads. The two tenors are teamed on eight numbers with Danny soloing on "Like Someone In Love" and Scott subtly decorating "My Shining Hour". Guitarist Dave Cliff and bedrock bassist Len Skeat duet on "It Could Happen To You", while John Pearce takes "Star Dust" as a piano solo, using a set of inspired substitute chords that would surely have had composer Hoagy Carmichael gagging in amazement. The two tenor men revel in the company of each other - and the wonderful rhythm team driven by master drummer Martin Drew. In the Middle of a Kiss Scott Hamilton emerged in the mid-'70s as a player who had a gift for creating a lush, swinging sound, regardless of the tempo or style. His partner on this 2010 studio session, Italian pianist Rossano Sportiello, is two decades younger, but the perfect partner. Their program includes a mix of standards and lesser-known songs, all played with a minimum of fuss and a maximum of beauty. "A Garden in the Rain" isn't the first ballad one would expect a jazz duo to choose, but the lush interpretation here could launch others into investigating its potential. Hamilton's boisterous playing is boosted by Sportiello's driving accompaniment, with the influence of the late Dave McKenna apparent. "Big Butter and Egg Man" is rarely played outside of traditional jazz/New Orleans jazz, but their brisk, lyrical interpretation should open some ears. They also sizzle with their driving rendition of "All God's Chillun' Got Rhythm," with plenty of fireworks as they trade the lead. Indian Summer Scott Hamilton, Howard Alden, and Frank Tate have a lot in common, in addition to each of them having worked with the late cornetist Ruby Braff on number of record dates and concerts. All three of them have vast repertoires of standards and jazz works, while they all keep the melody within reach when constructing their superb solos. The lack of piano is never an issue, as Alden's adept use of his seven-string electric guitar enables him to add depth to his playing, while Hamilton's big swinging tone is a throwback to the heyday of Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young, and Ben Webster. The trio members show they mean business with the energetic treatment of the old warhorse "There'll Be Some Changes Made," featuring intricate interwoven lines and top-drawer solos. Their lyrical setting of Dave Brubeck's "The Duke" is an intimate swinger that captures the nuances of Ellington suggested by the pianist in this timeless piece. They rework the Billy Strayhorn gem "Upper Manhattan Medical Group" as a breezy bossa nova, while the late Flip Phillips ballad "With Someone New" is a lush duet for tenor sax and guitar, with Hamilton's breathy vibrato beautifully complemented by Alden's subtle playing. "Indian Summer" is another old chestnut that still stimulates great jazz performances, with potent solos all around and an extended feature for Tate. Beggar & Co composed of core members Kenny Wellington, David Baptiste, Neville 'Breeze' McKrieth and other guest musicians specialising in jazz, funk and dance music. The founder members of the group were members of the group, Light Of The World, who enjoyed some success in the UK Albums Chart with their Round Trip album. Wellington, Baptiste and McKrieth formed Beggar and Co and experienced chart success, outselling the previous groups hit "Time", which they had also written. Beggar and Co's first single was "(Somebody) Help Me Out" and was in the chart for ten weeks, whilst the second was called "Mule (Chant No.2)" remained in the chart for five weeks. Between recording and touring, he also landed parts in rock operas, increasing his fan base in new territories. Daniel Lavoie was born in Manitoba, Canada. He had the normal early love for music that many artists share. After polishing his skills by performing for small audiences, he moved up to recording. His first English album, Nirvana Blue, was released under the Apex Records label in 1979. It was followed a year later by Les Felix, and then in 1981 by Daniel Lavoie - Collection. In 1982, it was Cravings. Two years later he completed the album Tension, Attention. Lavoie spent the next decade and beyond switching between recording in French and English, trying to please fans from many parts of the world. His playing blends slamming fills, chunky riffs, and sonic barrages mixed with expert uses of distortion, bent notes, and flashy chords.
