Eleven tracks which would grace anybody's blues collection - a mix of covers and six original works penned by Tommy Allen. The workload is shared by these two magnificent musicians. Tommy on guitars, percussion and vocal and Johnny Hewitt on a blues harp (harmonica) and vocal. Tommy is a bluesman and sings the blues with passion and vigour- his blues, slide/guitar work is marvellous and vocally is one of the best I've heard. Johnny Hewitt has a gift given to him by 'The Almighty' and plays his harmonica brilliantly; he makes the harp talk, and again vocally has that sharpness that cuts the blues. The first two tracks are written by Tommy Allen, there are six in all by him. All I Need Having sung with such widely respected underground alternative bands as Come, Live Skull, and Uzi (among others), frontwoman Thalia Zedek has enjoyed quite a long and illustrious career. Zedek got her start in music shortly after relocating from Washington, D.C., to Boston in the late '70s, when she fronted such obscure bands as White Women and the all-female Dangerous Birds (the latter had a song, "Smile on Your Face," featured on the infamous Sub Pop 100 compilation). By 1983, Zedek had left Dangerous Birds and formed Uzi, which managed to release only a single EP, 1986's six-track Sleep Asylum, during its brief existence. Not one to sit idle for long, Zedek was asked to join New York-based avant noise rockers Live Skull, appearing on such releases as 1987's Dusted, among a few others. By the early '90s, Zedek had left Live Skull and relocated back to Boston, where she formed Come (along with former Codeine drummer Chris Brokaw). The new band's first release was a single, "Car/Last Mistake," for Sub Pop's monthly singles club, which was followed up by such full-length releases as 1992's Eleven: Eleven, 1994's Don't Ask Don't Tell, 1996's Near Life Experience, and 1998's Gently, Down the Stream, before calling it quits. In 1998, Zedek was invited by the Indigo Girls to join them on their multi-artist Suffragette Sessions Tour, during which Zedek tried out new material. Shortly thereafter, Zedek decided to finally head out as a solo artist, and her debut record, 2001's Been Here and Gone, showed her jumping from genre to genre, including torch songs, folk, blues, and rock. The next year, Zedek issued the You're a Big Girl Now EP on Kimchee. She moved to Thrill Jockey for 2004's Trust Not Those in Whom Without Some Touch of Madness, and for 2008's Liars and Prayers she opted for her fullest, biggest sound since the Come days. Intimate listening from pianist Teddy Wilson, but surprisingly lively listening too - as Teddy's as fleet on the keys as ever, and maybe even more so in this well-recorded session from the 50s! The record's got a great Verve vibe - simple, unadorned presentation of the Teddy Wilson genius at its mature height - with bass and drums to help bring in a gentle bit of rhythm, but Teddy handling most of the energy himself - with an amazing command of the keyboard that really transforms these familiar tunes. The approach is like Erroll Garner at his best from the time - subtle magic from simple sources - but Teddy's lighter, and more lyrical too - especially on his flourishes on the keys. Recorded in New York City, October 1955. Possibly because of the sheer perfection of her vocal technique, Teddi King (1929-1977) may not have immediately seemed to some to be a jazz singer. But, in a career that included work with such piano luminaries as Nat Pierce, George Shearing and Dave McKenna, she won herself a small but discerning following as one of the best. Influenced by such outstanding jazz singers as Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald, whom she did not resemble vocally, and Lee Wiley, Mabel Mercer and Mildred Bailey, whom perhaps to a slight degree she did, she was blessed with near-perfect intonation, impeccable phrasing and a voice of crystalline beauty and freshness. All this is evident on these early Storyville sessions, where she is backed by front-line jazz talent in Ruby Braff, Nick Travis, Bob Brookmeyer, Gene Quill, pianists Jimmy Jones and Billy Taylor and sterling drummers Jo Jones and Osie Johnson. In these intimate, subtly calibrated sessions she sings with a warmth and delicacy no less forceful for being presented with elegance, sophistication and a complete absence of superfluous gesture or vocal sleightof-hand. Sy Oliver -Move Born Melvin "Sy" Oliver on December 17, 1910, in Battle Creek, Michigan, he left home at age 17 to play trumpet with Zack Whyte and his Chocolate Beau Brummels. He later developed his growling trumpet style in Alphonso Trent's territory band. Oliver joined Jimmie Lunceford's band in 1933, playing trumpet and contributing many hit arrangements, including "My Blue Heaven" and "Ain't She Sweet." In 1939, he became Tommy Dorsey's main arranger, providing many hip arrangements for the group at the time (similar to Fletcher Henderson's role with the rival Benny Goodman Orchestra during the same period). After leaving the Dorsey band, Oliver worked as a freelance arranger, including 10 years as musical director at Decca Records, during which time he presided over arrangements of recordings for Ella Fitzgerald. He continued leading his own nine-piece band through the '70s and retired from the music scene in 1984. Formed in early 2016 by Rage guitarist Tom Morello, bassist Tim Commerford, and drummer Brad Wilk, Public Enemy's main man Chuck D and turntablist DJ Lord, and Cypress Hill rapper B Real, Prophets of Rage combined the anti-establishment pedigree of the three groups like a socially conscious Voltron, utilizing the propulsive power and urgency of Rage, the fearlessness of Public Enemy, and the menace of Cypress Hill. Taking their name from the eponymous Public Enemy song -- which appeared on their 1988 sophomore classic It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back -- the group made its debut in Los Angeles on May 31, 2016, performing a mix of mostly Rage Against the Machine hits, a handful of Public Enemy tracks, a Cypress Hill medley, and a mash-up of the Beastie Boys' "No Sleep Til Brooklyn" and PE's "Fight the Power." Chuck D and B Real took turns at the fore, switching lead and hype man duties, while Rage's formidable rhythm section and Morello's virtuoso guitar effects provided the sonic attack. A North American summer tour -- dubbed "Make America Rage Again" -- was announced soon after, with proceeds from the tour benefiting local homeless charities at each stop. The tour kicked off in Cleveland as a planned protest of the 2016 Republican National Convention. Their first single -- also called "Prophets of Rage" -- premiered a few hours before the official start of the event. Produced by Brendan O'Brien, the track included a reworking of Chuck D's original PE verse, additional sneer from foil B Real, and a classic Rage Against the Machine buildup/release close. The band performed the song at a pair of guerilla protest rallies during the convention, closing out its three-day stint with a gig at the Agora Theatre.
