The band soon expanded, adding the now renowned horn section (The Rev Horns) and vocalists (The Speedettes) in 2001, which has enabled them to deliver the powerhouse deep funk sound they're known for today. In 2000, the first single was released "Soul Safari" on Soul Fire Records and soon followed several other releases by other labels. Each of the limited run 45 singles sold out to a rapidly growing funk audience. Three years later the band joined forces with Blow it Hard Records to record the first Speedometer LP. THIS IS SPEEDOMETER (VOL.I) which blended their love of heavy deep funk with Soul and fused this with Latin grooves that gave the eagerly awaiting funk fans and DJ's one of the best new authentic funk albums since the 1970's. 2005 saw the follow up album "THIS IS SPEEDOMETER (VOL. 2)".This second volume proved the bands credentials in delivering unrivalled heavyweight funk grooves and super-soul vocals from soul diva Ria Currie and the Speedettes. The funky re-work of Beyonce's "Work it out" has been one of the most successful new funk 45's to date and in the top 10 of most funk/soul DJ's around the globe. The album also led them to Japan for a fantastic sellout tour playing 8 shows in Nagoya & Osaka. Check out 'Speedometer live in Japan' video on u tube. Just type Speedometer funk into the search box. 2006 saw Freestyle Records in the UK release "Diggin Deeper". A compilation of all of Speedometer's early 7" 45 releases in one place on CD for the very first time. It also saw them back in Big Noise Studios to start laying tracks for the next album "4 Flights Up" due out in early 2007 on Freestyle Records. Over the years, Speedometer has worked with many of the US funk legends including Sir Joe Quarterman, Eddie Bo, Marva Whitney, Sharon Jones, James Bell (The Highlighters), Lee Fields, Billy Wooten and most recently, gigging and cutting two tracks in the studio with Robert Moore. The Los Angeles resident is comfortable in either jazz or pop settings; he has done his share of traditional pop and crossover jazz/smooth jazz work, but he can also handle straight-ahead jazz and bop. Whether a Winkler recording has a jazz improviser's perspective or more of a pop/crossover perspective has depended on different factors, including the label and the producer. Some of Winkler's work has leaned toward the Mose Allison/Dave Frishberg side of things; other times, his approach has been closer to Michael Franks or Kenny Rankin. And either way, Winkler generally maintains his smoothness; he has never been known as a forceful, overly aggressive, or in-your-face type of singer. Born and raised in the L.A. area, Winkler launched his recorded career in the mid-'80s. After recording some albums for the independent, L.A.-based Chase Music Group (including Color of Love, Ebony Rain, and Hottest Night of the Year), the Southern Californian freelanced for various indie labels in the '90s (including Countdown and Chartmaker). Winkler didn't build a huge catalog in the '80s or '90s; when the early 2000s arrived, his catalog added up to about six albums. But he has kept busy doing a variety of other things, which have ranged from writing songs for other vocalists to theatrical projects. Winkler - whose songs have been recorded by Liza Minnelli, Randy Crawford, Dianne Reeves, and others - wrote the off-Broadway musical Naked Boys Singing! (which debuted in New York in 1999 and went on to play in a few others cities as well). Ann, Man! is her most intimate date, a quartet set with trumpeter Jack Sheldon, guitarist Barney Kessel, bassist Red Callender, and drummer Larry Bunker. Four of the songs (including "There's a Lull in My Life" and "You Go to My Head") are duets with Kessel. Richards shows off her versatility and sensitivity on this well-rounded set, swinging lightly and singing with restrained emotions. It's an audacious move, putting the words of one of the 20th century's greatest poets to music. All those who are familiar with the words have their own perceptions of the images, and -- on some level -- a feeling of the settings they should have. With just voice, piano, and a little percussion, Souza imposes her own vision on the poems of Pablo Neruda, as she has before on the work of Elizabeth Bishop, and it can initially seem strange and take listeners by surprise, as on the relatively upbeat and busy "House." "We Are Many" is imagined as almost an art song. Translating poetry to song is difficult, especially this work, with no regular rhythm or meter, and that's reflected in the tidal shifts of "Sonnet 99." There's true adventure in "I Will Come Back," sung over only percussion, a jaunty beat that's a celebration of life, rather than a commiseration of death. On "Sonnet 49" she employs marimba, giving a stately exoticism to the music. Souza, who composed all the music, has an artist's ear and a real sense of beauty in addition to a moving voice. These aren't songs you sing along with; instead, their sometimes wandering melodies focus the ear on the lyrics, which is exactly as it should be. The closest this comes to a conventional structure is with the aching "Loneliness," which could translate into a future cabaret standard.
