Jimmy LaFave (born July 12, 1955) is an American singer-songwriter and folk musician born in Wills Point, Texas. After moving to Stillwater, Oklahoma, LaFave crafted a musical style called Red Dirt music and became a dis[beeep]le of the state's most famous folk musician: Woody Guthrie. LaFave is an Advisory Board member and regular performer at the annual Woody Guthrie Folk Festival. In 1996 he received the Kerrville Folk Festival songwriter of the year award and appeared on the TV show Austin City Limits. He has recorded 15 albums and his 2007 release, Cimarron Manifesto, reached the No. 1 mark on the Americana Music Association album chart. And a Hard Place Harris Eisenstadt's fifth album as a leader features a sextet of young Chicago players and all-star names. The lesser-known names are vibraphonist Jason Adasiewicz, gracefully waltzing through the drummer's complex compositions, and reeds player Jason Mears, who seems too busy keeping up with the score to truly shine. Bassist Jason Roebke has previously proved his worth (in Tigersmilk and the Scott Fields Ensemble, among other projects). Vandermark 5 trombonist [beeep] Bishop and Tortoise guitarist Jeff Parker are the most recognizable voices in the group, and live up to the expectations their names stir. Bishop's playing is soulful as ever and downright moving in "Seed," a piece dedicated to composer Henryk Gorecki. Parker's dreamy lines steal the spotlight in "Portrait of Holden Caulfield" and remain a defining element of the album throughout. Eisenstadt's writing borrows from post-bop, structured improvisation, and contemporary classical. It is neither Chicago jazz nor West Coast jazz, but something that encompasses both. This album sees him moving deeper into free-form territory, with lots of sections that are not notated but shaped, with varying results. These moments are contrasted with sharply written passages, as in "Kola #2 (Reduction)" and "The Evidence of Absence Is Not Necessarily the Absence of Evidence." The latter is the album's undisputed highlight for its witty complexity, swing, and tight ensemble playing, although "And a Hard Place" makes an excellent contender to the title, with its slow-paced, heavy theme and another dead-on solo from Bishop. Eisenstadt's music is often more melody-based than beat-driven, which is not common among composing drummers. So, by all means, don't approach The Soul and Gone as a drummer's record. Marc Anthony) [salsa Version] Hugely popular in their home country, Cuban group Gente de Zona ("People from the Neighborhood") combined reggaeton with traditional rhythms such as son and mambo. They recorded four hit albums and had been together for nearly 15 years before they finally broke out internationally via a collaboration with Latin megastar Enrique Iglesias. Formed in 2000 in the Havana suburb of Alamar by Alexander Delgado and Michel "El Caro" Delgado (no relation), they started out as a hip-hop group, playing at parties and local clubs. El Caro left in 2005, and Alexander recruited two new members, Yosdany "Jacob Forever" Carmenates and Fernando "Nando Pro" Otero. Recognizing that his lyrics had always had a commercial bent, and wishing to appeal more broadly to all Cubans, Alexander switched to the then-popular genre of reggaeton, but melded it with the traditional Cuban genres with which he felt an affinity. After scoring a hit single with "Pa' la Gente de Mi Zona" in 2005, the group self-released its first, eponymous album, which yielded several further hits. In 2007, they signed with Italy's Planet Records, releasing their sophomore effort Lo Mejor Que Suena Ahora. The albums A Full and Oro: Lo Nuevo y lo Mejor followed in 2010 and 2012, respectively. The group became wildly popular in Cuba, with several of their singles topping the charts; their biggest hit there was the portentous "El Animal." In 2011, they even launched their own fragrance. In 2012, Jacob and Nando left the group to pursue their own musical project, once again leaving Alexander as the sole remaining original member. He swiftly poached Randy Malcom Martinez from the popular timba band Charanga Habanera, and soldiered on. Expanding his interest in traditional music, he recruited a full band and collaborated with the orchestra Habana de Primera. Gente de Zona's international profile was raised via collaborations with Pitbull on "Vacaciones" and Dominican rapper El Cata on "Con la Ropa Puesta," which was a massive hit in Latin territories. Their 2014 collaboration with Enrique Iglesias, "Bailando," from his album Sex and Love, gave them their biggest international hit, going to number 12 on the U.S. Billboard chart. At the end of 2016, La Gente de Zona issued the pre-release single "La Gozadera" that featured Marc Anthony as a guest. The cut peaked at number two on various charts. They followed it with "Traidora" -- another duet with Anthony -- in the spring. The subsequent album, Visualizate, was released at the end of April. Taylor's performance is indeed the highlight, just as Eric Clapton and Peter Green's playing was on the previous album. The centerpiece of the album is a beautiful instrumental by Taylor titled "Snowy Wood," which, while wholly original, seems to combine both Green and Clapton's influence with great style and sensibility. The rest of the record, while very enjoyable, is standard blues-rock fare of the day, but somewhat behind the then-progressive flavor of 1967. Mayall, while being one of the great bandleaders of London, simply wasn't really the frontman that the group needed so desperately, especially then. Dark, atmospheric corners are waving in movies atmospheres. This album will definitely be interesting for the listeners that likes darker and more extravagant positions of industrial culture. From "Cool Blues Stole My Heart," to "Love and Affection," and "Show Some Emotion," to "Drop the Pilot," "(I Love It When You) Call Me Names," and even lesser known tunes like "Feelin In My Heart for You," and "Heaven," which closes the set. There is little that's left out, making this one of the most glorious "Best Of's" to come out in the Chronicles series. If there was a true introduction to Armatrading, this one serves the role far better than a mere ten-cut greatest hits.
