Japanese Bonus [02:46] New Cool Collective have been happily grooving on 15 years of fame thanks to their unique mix of jazz, dance, latin, salsa, afrobeat and boogaloo. They are always funky, energetic and danceable -- no matter if they perform as a 19-piece Big Band or as a more compact 8-piece. It all began in 1994 when saxophonist Benjamin Herman began experimenting with DJ Graham B in the Amsterdam nightclub Soul Kitchen. As Graham B spinned, Herman played live -- a combination that was then unique. Eventually this evolved into the 8-piece New Cool Collective that is now equally at home playing clubs as it is festivals. And more recently, TV shows have been clamouring to make them their house band. But in the end they will always choose their own path. And wherever they stop along the way, there will definitely be a party. As pioneers in the Dutch jazz scene, these musicians were long seen as deeply strange birds. Jazz purists regarded their "Soul Jazz Latin Flavours Nineties Vibe" as too hard and fast. But once younger clubbers found their way to this throbbing dance orchestra then playing at Caf?? Meander, the future arrived and both jazz lovers and jazz haters couldn't stay away. NCC has won an Edison Award, a Heineken Crossover Music Award and the Golden Nutcracker. They have toured the great expanses of Benelux, Great Britain, Germany, Africa, Canada, Russia and Japan. They not only play hipster jazz clubs but also such huge pop and rock festivals as Roskilde (Denmark), Sziget (Hungary), Pinkpop (Netherlands), Lowlands (Netherlands), Camden Mix Festival (UK) and the Aberdeen Alternative Festival (UK). On the 2nd op April 2010, New Cool Collective released a new Big Band album, Pachinko. New Cool Collective made a highly influential trip to Japan in summer 2009. They sucked up impressions from everywhere: from the commercial and video jingles coming from their hotel room's TV, to the wacky jackpot soundscapes emitting from the gaming halls of Tokyo's entertainment district Roppongi. Now add to this mix some "punkjazz", a more dominant rock sound, a 1980s feeling (or is it a 1990s one?) and some throbbing electro drive, and the results are both personal and intense. In short, New Cool Collective Big Band's PACHINKO is a strong and kinetic album that will leave music lovers stupefied. In a sense, it's the concise counterpart to the box set To Be Continued, released that same year but spanning four discs and filled with rarities. Although that set has several great songs that aren't here, this set has nothing extraneous -- just the biggest hits from a time when John was hitting the U.S. and U.K. Top 40 every single year. Gordon and his impressive quartet (pianist Kenny Drew, bassist Neils Henning Orsted Pederson and drummer Albert "Tootie" Heath) play versions of "Like Someone in Love," "Come Rain or Come Shine," "There Will Never Be Another You," "Body and Soul" and "Blues Walk" that clock in between nine and 14 minutes. Ironically, Dexter, who was in peak form during his years in Europe, was somewhat forgotten in the U.S. at the time. Could It Be Forever (duet with Hear'say - bonus track) While both David Cassidy and the Partridge Family have been at least partially anthologized over the years, it remains a thing of wonder that nobody has yet sat down to compile the best of both into one all-encompassing package -- all the more so since Cassidy's personal appeal remains as high as any '70s icon could dream of climbing. Cassidy himself has toyed with his past on occasion, with releases ranging from a mid-'80s live hits album to the savage reinvention of "I Think I Love You," which so dignified his 1998 Slamajama album. Then and Now, however, goes further than either he, or his past record companies, have ever traveled, serving up 22 songs of which just three ("Cry," "No Bridge I Wouldn't Cross," and "Sheltered in Your Arms") don't immediately leap out of the memory banks. From "I Woke Up in Love This Morning" to "I Write the Songs," from "Cherish" to "The Last Kiss" (a 1985 U.K. smash that marked the first of his serious comebacks), Cassidy revisits a career's worth of pop classics, as straight as a die and faithful enough that you could almost forget you're not listening to the greatest hits collection on earth. No sneaky drum'n'bass redesigns, no nasty modern production tricks, no heartless stab at "updating" the songs for the modern listener. A pointless duet with boy band Hear'Say does raise a few anachronistic hackles, but "Could It Be Forever" has already appeared once on the album; once more is no skin off anyone's nose. It's unabashed nostalgia, then, and all delivered with such sincerity that you can't even feel cynical about the exercise. The booklet photos are early-'70s classic; the inclusion of the lyrics lets you cheat and peek at the occasional line you may not quite remember. And Cassidy's voice hasn't lost an ounce of its charm since the first time he sang these songs. Of course it isn't quite the real, all-encompassing best-of box thing that fans have been waiting for all these years. Even still, one distinctive voice which proved to be ideal for such airs was the haute-contre, a high tenor, sweet-sounding and clear; precisely the instrument possessed by Cyril Auvity, and it is no coincidence that the singer has, in recent years, been enjoying much success with his performances of the music of, among many others, Lully and Charpentier (the latter was an haute-contre himself). 'Stances du Cid' presents a selection of Charpentier s secular vocal works, including the seldom-recorded stanzas (whose text is taken from Pierre Corneille s tragicomedy 'Le Cid', which enjoyed great popularity for years after its 1637 premi?¨re in Paris). The bucolic character of Charpentier s other airs is complemented by a pair of airs de cour from an earlier master of the genre, Michael Lambert, and the expressive flavour of the music of ancien r??gime. France is suitably represented on this recording also by instrumental interludes taken from Fran?§ois Couperin s trio sonatas 'Les Nations', deftly handled by L Yriade.
