The Ending (3:23) Singer/songwriter/producer Steve Kipner's career spans over three decades, from Olivia Newton-John's mega-selling 1981 hit "Physical" to the 1999 hits "The Hardest Thing" by 98 Degrees and Christina Aguilera's "Genie in a Bottle." Another Kipner song, "Anyway," is included on the 1999 RCA solo debut for singer Kevan Edmonds, formerly of the group After 7 ("Ready or Not," "Can't Stop"), produced by Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds. Born in Cincinnati, OH, Kipner has musical talent in his genes. His father, Nat Kipner, co-wrote with Johnny Vallins the gold single "Too Much, Too Little, Too Late" by Johnny Mathis & Deniece Williams (number one R&B for four weeks, number one pop, spring/summer 1978). While still a child, Steve Kipner moved with his parents to Brisbane, Australia, where his father was stationed as a member of the U.S. Air Force. At 16, he had a number one 1965 Aussie hit with "Giggle Eyed Google Eyegoo" with his band Steve and the Board for Spin Records. Later in England, Kipner, as part of the duo Tin Tin with Steve Groves scored a hit on Atco Records with "Toast and Marmalade for Tea." Produced by his old friend Maurice Gibb of the Bee Gees, the tune went to number 20 pop, spring 1971. Spending some time in London, he was introduced to Peter Beckett. Later, Kipner co-wrote two songs for Beckett's band Player, who later hit with the 1978 gold single "Baby Come Back." Producers Mike Curb and Michael Lloyd invited Kipner to the United States to work on a band project, Friends, for MGM Records during Christmas 1973. Settling in the Los Angeles area, Kipner started doing background vocals for various recording artists and writing songs. He began singing in coffee bars to expose his original tunes. To make ends meet, Kipner began selling house plants out of a Volkswagen van with a friend around Hollywood. He scraped together $600 to buy a 4-track Teac tape recorder. Coming across a band that practiced in a garage in his neighborhood, Kipner struck a barter deal: he'd loan them his Teac in exchange for them backing him on his song demos. The partnership proved successful. One day while selling plants and handing out his cassette demos, Kipner met RSO record executive Al Coury's secretary, who invited him upstairs. The meeting got Kipner a singles deal with the label. Kipner's major songwriting success started when he played the demo of "Let's Get Physical" to his manager Roger Davies and it was overheard by Olivia Newton-John's manager Lee Kramer who was in the next-door office. Kramer originally wanted the song to help promote one of his other clients, Mr. Universe. Produced by John Farrar and co-written by Kipner and Terry Shaddick, "Physical" pumped its way up to number one pop, staying in place for an astounding ten weeks beginning November 21, 1981. The song received airplay on all kinds of radio stations including urban radio. Another Kipner hit, "Heart Attack," co-written with Paul Bliss, peaked at number three pop, spending 21 weeks on the charts after its debut on September 4, 1982. In 1998, Kipner hooked up with keyboardist David Frank of the pioneering synth duo the System. The two began collaborating on songs and scored a summer 1999 Top Five pop hit for vocal group 98 Degrees with "The Hardest Thing" from the platinum LP 98 Degrees and Rising (Motown). The duo followed that up with "Genie in a Bottle" by Christina Aguilera who had been featured in the Disney animated feature Mulan. Kipner was also involved in an recording project for the Chicago-based National Committee to Prevent Child Abuse through songwriter/producer Jack Kugel. Others involved included Stephen Stills, Ann Wilson of Heart, Olivia Newton-John, All 4 One, Michael Bolton, and Timia. During 1999, Kipner had product coming out on the self-titled debut CD for LFO (Arista) which included the single "Summer Girls" and four tracks for singer T'gana (Hollywood): "Pain," "Give Me," "All the Love," and "There Is a Love." Other songs in Kipner's catalog are Chicago's Grammy-nominated "If She Would Have Been Faithful" and "Hard Habit to Break" (number three pop, summer 1984), Changing Faces' "My Heart Can't Take Much More (All Day All Night)," Color Me Badd's "The Last to Know," Janet Jackson's "Two to the Power of Love," Joe Cocker's "Take Me Home," Cher's "I Paralyze," and George Benson's "20/20" (number 15 R&B, late 1984). Allegro assai Pianist Simone Dinnerstein is one of the fastest rising classical performers of the early 21st century, with a flourishing international career as a soloist and a number of popular and award-winning recordings to her credit. Although her repertoire is broad, ranging from the Baroque to contemporary premieres, she has gained a reputation as a musician with a special affinity of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach. Born in New York City, she studied at the Manhattan School of Music, graduated from the Juilliard School, where she was a student of Peter Serkin, and was a fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center. Her breakthrough came with her 2005 New York debut at Carnegie Hall debut, where she played Bach's Goldberg Variations. Her 2007 recording of the piece on the Telarc label went to the top of the U.S. Billboard Classical Chart in the first week of its commercial release. It received numerous critical accolades including a Diapason d'Or Award and a place on many prestigious "Best of the Year" lists. Her second recording, of a live 2007 recital in Berlin featuring works by J.S. Bach, Beethoven, and American composer Philip Lasser, was released in 2008 and also shot to the number one spot on the U.S. Billboard Classical Chart in its first week. Her third recording, Bach: A Strange Beauty, was released on Sony Classical in 2011; it not only topped the classical chart, but became one of the top sellers of the year in any genre. A follow-up appeared one year later, Something Almost Being Said: Music of Bach and Schubert. Early in 2013, Dinnerstein collaborated with singer/songwriter Tift Merrit on a song cycle titled Night. That same year, she also released a purely classical album, Bach: Inventions & Sinfonias. In her performance career, Dinnerstein has developed an impressive international r??sum?? both as a recitalist and concerto soloist. She has performed recitals at London's Wigmore Hall, Lincoln Center's Mostly Mozart Festival, the Kennedy Center, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Aspen and Ravinia Festivals, and in Paris, Vienna, Cologne, Stuttgart, and Rome, among others. Allegro On close to 40 discs, flautist Sharon Bezaly has impressed and delighted critics and listeners worldwide, earning the description 'God's gift to the flute'. Her wide-ranging discography naturally includes core repertoire, such as the concertos by Mozart, Nielsen, Rodrigo and Reinecke, but also a large number of works written especially for her. The works on the present disc owe their existence to two other flautists, however: Jean-Pierre Rampal, who transcribed Aram Khachaturian's violin concerto for his own instrument, and Gunilla von Bahr, for whom Einojuhani Rautavaara composed his 'Dances with the Winds' in 1974. Khachaturian wrote his concerto in 1940, dedicating it to David Oistrakh, who also gave the first performance. The composer always had a particular liking for the work, and when Rampal in 1968 asked him to compose a concerto for the flute, Khachaturian instead suggested that he should transcribe it. Rampal was given carte blanche when it came to making the necessary changes, and thus reworked the solo part completely. The orchestral score here performed by the Sao Paulo Symphony Orchestra conducted by Enrique Diemecke was left unaltered, however. In a manner of speaking, Rautavaara's concerto is not a solo concerto, as it is written for all four instruments of the flute family. In the first and the last of the four movements the soloist plays the normal 'flauto grande' and the bass flute, while the second movement is written for piccolo and the third for alto flute. After completing the work, the composer made a revised version in which the most unusual of these instruments, the bass flute, was replaced by the alto flute. Remco Campert) (2:46) In August 2006, while finishing work on the London Session, I was invited to lay down a soundtrack for a documentary on legendary Dutch Writer Remco Campert. An interesting challenge. Apart from being one of Holland's most respected authors Campert is also a big jazz fan. He has often featured music and musicians in his work over the last fifty years. As a popular columnist on one of Holland's leading dailies he would occasionaly refer to concerts and records he likes. He even came to a few of my gigs- so naturally I was excited about taking part in the film. Campert is one of a group of Dutch writers known as the Vijftigers, basically because they came onto the scene in the 1950s. That seemed like an appropiate starting point. How about doing a session connected to the postwar music scene here in Holland? There are some incredible Dutch players from that era whow I'd love to record. When the rushes of the documentary came in, a whole new dimension emerged. Obviously this was no lighthearted jaunt down memory lane; this was a highly personal film in which Campert looked back on his life as a child, a husband and a father, revealing a side of the writer most people have never before. A nostalgic soundtrack would have seemed shallow: the film needed something more dynamic. With Gideon van Gelder, Sean Fasciani and Joost Kroon, three of Holland's finest young jazz musicians, we soon found ourselves in a totally different musical world. There's a poem by Campert in which he describes how jazz musicians encouraged him to write poetry. He wrote it in 1962. Over the years, he has inspired many people in his own right. Not least our band. Recording this soundtrack led us into fascinating new directions. The original music was fifteen minutes long. We went back to the studio in July 2007 to extend the material and record some extra tracks. I love the way the whole thing fits together and hope the feel of Campert's poetry comes across. Maria Callas's outstanding assumption of the title role was recognised as such by Opera magazine's important recorded performances series in the 1970s. She was placed alongside Eva Turner as its pre-eminent interpreter to date in a list already including Gina Cigna, Birgit Nilsson and Inge Borkh. Callas had sung the role 'live' in Italy (Venice, Rome, Verona, Genoa and Naples) and South America (Buenos Aires) 24 times in 18 months in 1948-9 but then dropped it from her repertoire. So when Columbia's Walter Legge-produced set was made at La Scala in July 1957, she had not sung a complete Turandot for eight years or recorded even excerpts from it since 1954 ('In questa reggia' and the two Li?? arias). Parts of Act III from her last run of performances (at the Teatro Col??n) have survived. The voice may have been more forceful - Callas was then a dramatic soprano whose repertoire was based on Turandot, Aida, Leonora (Forza), Norma, Abigaille and Kundry. The commanding presence of a dangerous virgin Empress who will kill for the sake of a centuries-old vendetta is certainly there. But the interpretation lacks the detail that Callas would mine from the motivation of her gradual sexual awakening after Li??'s death or the ecstatic, resolving announcement in Act III ('Padre augusto, conosco il nome dello straniero! Il suo nome ?¨. Amor!'). Here Callas found the personal psychological colouring that so fascinated her in the parts of Violetta, Lucia or in Act III of Aida, layers often lacking in Puccini performances. The conducting of Tullio Serafin, Callas's mentor in this role as in so many others, is a contributing factor to her enhanced view of the title role. Serafin, rather than exploring the relative modernity of Puccini's harmonies or the 'oriental' colouring of his orchestration (as, say, Stokowski would in his Metropolitan performances a few years later), takes an almost Wagnerian, symphonic approach to the score. Line and narrative outrank local colour. Of interest also in the cast are Legge's wife Elisabeth Schwarzkopf (a close friend of Callas) as Li?? and Giuseppe Nessi, who created the role of Pang in 1926, as the Emperor.
