West Coast Is The Best Coast (Reprise) (3:07) Mel Torm??'s California Suite originated in 1949 and was the first blossom of his interest in composing and expanding the palette of traditional pop beyond crooning. Recorded while he was at Capitol, the original conception was a 20-minute piece recorded with the help of arrangers Billy May and Neal Hefti plus Peggy Lee on vocals. In response to support from fans and his next label, Bethlehem, Torm?? expanded California Suite to a full LP eight years later. His new friend, Marty Paich, gave the arrangements an upbeat feel, splendidly evoking the go-go '50s. Though many tracks border on that cagey territory between a pep rally and a tourism commercial, the music is bright and bouncy, with Torm?? gliding over the arrangements with sheer grace and even finding time to get in an occasional dig at Californian sensibilities ("That's not smog/It's just heavy dew"). Though the titles are a bit silly -- he had lately been inspired by Johnny Mercer -- Torm?? saves the album with some of the best compositions of his career. He flirts with song structure (sounds inspired more by musical comedy than traditional pop) and writes clever lyrics that reveal a layer beneath the superficiality of the song titles. He also sounds in what could be the best voice of his entire career, rivaled only by Mel Torm?? Sings Fred Astaire or Swings Shubert Alley. On the strength of the spiritual pop songs that appeared on September Sun (1997), Every Step of the Way (1998), and Sellout (2002), he began landing work as a songwriter for hire. West also drew interest from Universal South Records, who signed the artist and released his major-label debut, the Dove Award-winning Happy, in 2003. History followed in 2005, and West supported the album's release with the first headlining tour of his career. Excessive use of his voice led to severe medical problems, though, forcing West to undergo throat surgery in 2007 to remove multiple polyps. Following a period of vocal rest, he returned in 2008 with Something to Say. The album's lead single, "You Are Everything," became the most-played song on Christian radio in 2008, and West -- now fully healed and singing comfortably -- quickly returned to the studio to record 2010's The Story of Your Life, which also charted well. Wide River To Cross (4:03) I was born in Oklahoma, a son of a mechanic / country singer and school teacher. My father's band traveled throughout Oklahoma, Texas, and Louisiana during the sweeping urban cowboy times of the 70's and 80's. In 2001 I moved to Nashville to write songs for a living, after some hard broke years I landed a job writing for Tom Collins who published and produced alot of acts from Ronnie Milsap to Steve Wariner. I didn't land any big cuts there but learned the art of writing from a true "old school" hard nosed mentor. I shortly thereafter started a band with my brother and a few other friends, THE DIRT DRIFTERS, we travelled the old school way from honky-tonk to honky-tonk for some years and landed a home at Warner Brothers to cut a record. It was right on the cusp of the internet buggering into business models of record labels and looking back the contracts they make you sign are highway robbery. Not long after I signed with EMI publishing as a songwriter and honed my craft even more. My favorites have always been the ones who did things their way, and even more the ones who looked at a song like a painting to give to the world. During this time we toured with the likes of Dierks Bentley, Eric Church, Jason Aldean, Lynrd Skynrd, etc. We got to record a song with Willie Nelson, play the Opry, Buck's Crystal Palace and every dive that would have us from coast to coast. I love the people in the places throughout this Great Divide, they all have a story to tell and I love hearing them. What a land... We eventually cut a record thru a couple regime changes and corporate musical chairs events, and came out with a hell of a album, THIS IS MY BLOOD. We got a few singles that charted, but during that time the Nashville sound was changing to more of an electronic party sound mixed with lacking lyrics. I did end up getting some songs recorded by artists like Dierks Bentley, Chris Stapleton, Casey Donahue Band, Willie Nelson, Dean Brody to name a few. But something still wasn't right. Resting on my core I eventually came to the realization that there were a lot of folks with their hands in my pockets that didn't belong there, and the song that I wanted to sing just wouldn't be heard on mainstream threads, nor was the current paradigm a healthy world to be in to reach who wanted to be as a man. So I packed up my guitar and my family and moved to the hill country of Texas. I come from a long line of pioneers, and the dream of living off the land has been just as strong as my love of the craft of songwriting. So here I am, on a seven acre homestead with my amazing family and all that entails. I love the song that the land sings when you walk with it in the art of regeneration. The new growth and the lessons waiting to be spoken. There is a song under every stone. You may see me driving to a gig here in the beautiful Hill Country, or hear me playing one of my paintings for the great folks of Texas. Great Soul was recorded in Matt's new studio called Drum Shak. Chris Marshak's dry snare and Tablas introduce into and accompany Matt's guitar lead. Mike Dimeo sets the fire with his shouts on fire, while the humming along the guitar melody reminds me of the legendary Jimi Hendrix. Seduction is one of the songs on this album which were recorded without editing. On Gas Lamp Groove Matt excels with a superb guitar modulation perfectly underlined by Franklin Brown's bass and drum programming. Better known under his pseudonym Stix Bones (De La Soul) he released his albums Groove Like This (Smooth Jazz) and Bones Beats Volume 1 (Hip Hop). Mellow guitar tones caresses your ears on Gratitude, a song by keyboardist Rodney Williams. The song also features David Mann on sax. Yes, you can also find on this album vocals. Real Good Time presents charming singer Deadra Aziza. Really, Deadra deserves more merits. A good start was her contribution on Matt's album Groovosphere. The easy going We Gonna' Make It is a perfect good-morning-sunshine-song. Benjie Porecki supports with precise key strokes Matt's guitar riffs. Benjie is in recent times preparing the release of his new album. The title says it all, Funkology is a tutorial about Funk in particular and good music in general. Get To Know U is featuring singer and bass player Kenny Harris, who wrote the song as well. Kenny was also guest musician on Matt's album This Time Around. Long Island is Matt's homage to his native soil. Matt comments: "Just 1.5 hours outside of the capital of the world (NYC), there are beautiful fields, farms, a taste of the past, and a blossoming vineyard scene producing some amazing wines." You can follow Matt's impressions of his hometown on this tune. What Would Have Been (JH's Song) seems to be a sad reverberation to Matt's lost favorite radio station CD101.9, although it's conceived as reminiscence to the late Jimi Hendrix.
