Skin And Bone 'Babajack Live' starts out as a blues album - all wailing harp, rough-hewn slide and hypnotic rhythms on homemade instruments - but quickly develops organically into a body of music with more depth. The background to the album is that it was originally meant to be recorded at the Albert Hall, but circumstances dictated otherwise, leading to a last minute change of venue. In that context both the band and producer Paul Long have done remarkably well to nail an essential live album full of Becky's edgy vocals, the ensemble's rip-roaring percussive style and their inspired interplay. The band explores layers of expansive Afro-rhythmic textures with a Delta blues feel, shot through with a rocky edge. The kick ass rhythm section of drummer Tosh Murase and Adam Bertenshaw push vocalist and percussionist Becky Tate and the harp playing guitarist to the limit. It helps of course that their material is an amalgamation of roots-rock, blues and folk that some might call tribal fusion. It's a musical hybrid that readily lends itself to their intense version of 'Gallows Pole', a number that runs the full gamut of styles from folk to blues and rock. It's easy to identify Babajack as a jam band who eschew structure for feel and spontaneity. But that would be to overlook their musical complexity, comprising sudden tempo changes and a subtle use of dynamics that gives tracks like the extended 'Coming Home' its impact. The song's break-down pairs Julia Palmer Price's gently bowed cello with Becky's emotive vocal. An if there are moments when you are not sure where the band is going, it gives them a definable edge. Julia returns later to add some ethereal sounds on the beautifully crafted 'Breathe', which is a perfect title for a short atmospheric piece full of poise and presence 'Bababajack Live', shifts from acoustic blues roots through moments of rocking intensity to ride roughshod over expectations. On 'Falling hard', the emphasis is on Becky's tremulous phrasing and Trevor's sonorous harp. The duo stretch the song over a rock solid backbeat, as the track ebbs and flows from quiet emotive moments to polar opposite explosive dynamics. The pregnant pause at the end of the song is that of an audience collectively catching its breath! Becky tells the crowd that: 'some people say we're not really blues' , and then they offer the perfect musical riposte with groundbreaking music that draws on several musical traditions and fuses it all together in their own inimitable style. And having established a rhythmic template for their music, the band strips things down on 'Hammer & Tongs' to just the voice and lyrical harp on an arrangement in which Becky's phrasing is everything. If there's a downside its simply that a surfeit of mid-tempo rhythms is in danger of overloading the senses, though the band seems to be aware of this in the way they explore different dynamics and a variety of vocal attacks. On 'Rock & Roll Star' they build a brusque groove on the back of a big rock drum figure, tempered by funky bass licks. A mid-number Steger rap gives the effect of layered vocals on a track that comes closest to capturing their unique style. 'Back Door' features Trevor on harp, slide and feverish rhythm as the band stretches out, while the sheer intensity of 'Gallows Pole' earns them a deserved raucous reception. Tracks #5-12, from the Lem Winchester-Ramsey Lewis Trio LP "Perform a Tribute to Clifford Brown" (Argo LP(S) 642); Recorded in Chicago, on October 8, 1958. Active for some years as a semi-professional jazz vibist, Lem Winchester, a police officer in Wilmington, Del., was largely unknown when jazz critic Leonard Feather first heard him in 1958 and brought him to the Newport Jazz festival that year. There, his stellar performance astounded audiences, musicians and critics alike. Issued as part of the album New Faces at Newport, it opened up for him the prospect of a career in jazz. Backed by Ramsey Lewiss well integrated trio, he made his first record as leader a few months later, working beautifully with Lewis on the tribute album to the late trumpeter, Clifford Brown, a boyhood friend of the vibist, included here. As a cop, however, Winchester was violating police regulations by working as a weekend musician in his home town and in Philadelphia jazz spots. So, having recorded few highly praised albums, after eleven years of trying to decide between pounding a beat and keeping one, he turned in his badge and gun in the summer of 1960 and joined the jazz fraternity full time. Patrick's voice is a solid soul-blues instrument, and as you might expect from his gig, he hits all the obvious highlights-"Crossroads," "Little Wing," "Rock Me Baby," "Pride & Joy." (If you need further ID on those classics, this is not the band for you.) And aside from putting a little extra get-up in Howlin' Wolf's deathless "Killing Floor" and accenting the funk in Freddie King's "Big Leg Woman," the Xpress doesn't do anything startling with the material. The real news here is guitarist Ryan Hall, another native who's been doing time with Texas alt-blues trio Woody's Rampage. Barely out of his teens, Hall can wring necks with anyone on the Austin scene, and almost certainly cut the heads of any Crescent City native to whom blues is their first language-he's got plenty of fireworks, and yet he's already smart enough to save them for when they'll do the most damage. The whole band handles the Texas-Chicago electric blues nexus with a local's sense of rhythm, but Hall can play on Bourbon Street anytime, as well as Sixth Street, Beale Street. he can take over any town he wants, really. Missing [5:20] Patricia Barber is a crack jazz pianist, an innovative composer, a singular vocal stylist, and among the most original lyricists/song-poets to come down the pipe in 40 years. Her use of metaphor and metonymy is woven inextricably into her trademark melodies, which create mental and sonic images that evoke insight and emotion. Smash, Barber's debut for Concord, is comprised of original material performed by an excellent band that includes guitarist John Kregor, bassist Larry Kohut, and drummer Jon Deitemyer. The predominant subject matter of these songs is love's loss: the frustrated desire, grief, acceptance, longing, and healing its aftermath brings. Barber is as empathic and insightful as a depth psychologist. Her language is rich, precise, and devoid of trite sentimentality. Lyrically, these songs are wound with the elastic imagery of poetry, but their rhyme schemes are taut, given air by the fluidity of her jazz. Opener "Code Cool" is introduced by Deitemyer's snare and hi-hat in a constant thrum that emulates the pulse of electronic dance music. It's underscored by a one-note vamp from Kohut. Barber's piano illustrates with a series of glissando chords as Kregor fills the space expressionistically, highlighting the well of images and urgency in lyrics which reference science, Keats, and medical treatment before concluding she is "...Michaelangelo's David/Tested and worn..." Barber employs space between sections, stilling the proceeding with a single chord, before that pulse returns to her protagonist's realization that she needs to fake it until she makes it: "I will live/As if/I were loving." "The Wind Song" is a brooding, mysterious ballad, whose lyric drama is spacious, highlighted by brushed symbols, acoustic guitar, nearly gossamer pianism, and a physical bassline to bind it to earth. In the title track's first half, the piano and bass offer the tender illustration of "the sound of a heart breaking..." But at the halfway point, the physical fury of that emotion is laid bare by Kregor's screaming electric guitar solo, which allows for the held, breathless emotional power in this and all the previous songs, release. The companion piece is "Scream," where a jazz piano ballad opens into a nearly full-blown rocker. "Redshift" is a crystalline bossa nova; its lyrics unite love's loss with physics in clever, hip associations punctuated by a syncopated groove. "Bashful" is a swinging post-bop instrumental that features great soloing by everyone. "Missing" is introduced by Kregor's acoustic and Barber's sparse piano. It's a musically metaphorical illustration of the tune's subject matter: waiting in vain, hoping against hope that the truth of loss isn't, in fact, true. It's raw, vulnerable, and fearful. Kregor's gorgeous solo and Kohut's economical bassline offer room for Barber's piano to illuminate the lyric with tenderness. Smash is an extraordinary achievement. Here, jazz is popular music without being anything other than itself. It can seem serene and be flowing smoothly and in a blink erupt with a power and energy you never saw sneaking up on you. It is folky and then goes to almost violent tribal rhythms that display the sheer power of the music being generated. There are gypsy rhythms intertwined with African beats, drone, blues, and folk music. BabaJack is comprised of Trevor Steger on acoustic Dobro and wine box guitars, harmonica and vocals; Becky Tate vocals, drum, and stomp, with Aron Attwood on drums, bass, percussion and vocals (he also produced the disc) and they are joined by about five of their cohorts on various tracks on various instruments. The songs they unleash on the unsuspecting-they did write all of them-are well written and show the versatility of this group with their friends. The singing, mostly done by Becky, is always full of emotion and very evocative and expressive. Though her voice comes very close to the level of surrender to the song, it is the musical rhythms that carry them. It is as much as what they don't play, the spaces they create and don't play into, as what they do play that creates the tension in the songs. Becky's voice has a gritty edge to it that gives it added texture along with Trevor's percussive guitar playing, particularly when he is using his slide. While Rush has tackled some of this material on other outings, never has it been served up so passionately as it is here.
