Flynn's Place Harmonica player and keyboardist Mike Markowitz, born in Queens, NY, and raised in New York City's burgeoning 1980s blues club scene, has made his mark in the blues world through a lot of hard touring and a bit of good, old-fashioned New York salesmanship, or "chutzpah." Born November 23, 1955, Markowitz cites his earliest influences as John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, and Little Walter Jacobs. In 1978, he formed his first blues band and began playing the blues bars around lower Manhattan, but his reputation began to grow when he began backing up legendary musicians like pianist Pinetop Perkins, Hubert Sumlin, and Jimmy Rogers when they came to New York or New Jersey to perform. Markowitz's passion for blues, as a fan and as a performer, is legendary, and he carried it over into the producer's chair in 1988, when he recorded albums for Perkins and later for Sumlin. In 1990, Little Mike & the Tornadoes got their own recording contract with Blind Pig, a San Francisco-based label, and his output has been quite prolific since then. The group's first album, Heart Attack, includes guest performances by Perkins, Paul Butterfield, and Sumlin. Two years later, he recorded Payday, also for Blind Pig, before recording his debut for Flying Fish Records (a label that has since been acquired by Rounder Records), Flynn's Place. Markowitz is an extremely hard working, level-headed blues musician who will no doubt surface again and again on records, whether for Rounder or for some other label. This 2CD set from Jasmine features the A and B side of every single he released up to 1962 and includes the hits "Nest Time You See Me", "Annie Get Your Yo Yo" and "Driving Wheel". Also included is his original version of "Mystery Train" which was later revised by Elvis Presley. As well as being one of the great blues vocalist he was also a significant harmonica player too. Fans of James Cotton. Despite his young age of only 16, Andreas quickly made a name for himself as a talented singer and guitarist. During the winter of 1999 he was invited to tour all over Florida with the famous blues master David C. York, better known as Rock Bottom. Being an American with a thick southern accent, Rock found it hard to pronounce Andreas' name, so he came up with the nickname Little Andrew. Andreas returned to Norway seething with inspiration and energy, and formed a group of his own: Little Andrew & The Blue Masters. They won the Union Blues Cup in 2000 and toured all over Norway throughout the millenium. Some highlights included Notodden Blues Festival, ??m??l Blues Festival, Dr?¸bak Blues Festival, Oslo Jazz Festival and many others. The rest, as they say, is history. To back him, Little Andrew has picked among the best musicians from the Norwegian blues scene. P??l M. Dahl?¸ on bass, Robert Schei on the drums and now with pianolayer. Known as "The finest blues & rock n´roll band of Norway" Little Andrew and his band are yet again ready to rumble the road. In summer 2007, Little Andrew released his debut album "Rock Back To Bottom" which was well received both in Norway and in the US. Now he is back with the brand new album "Loadstone". It seems like the last years touring, has made Little Andrew and his band even more hungry, something you definitely will hear if you go see them playing live. Born in 1970 in Toronto, Canada, to a Portuguese father and a Canadian mother, he began playing guitar in his early teens and moved to Chicago, IL, in the late '90s with hopes of establishing himself as a musician. After honing his craft on the Windy City club circuit, he moved to Nashville, TN, where he found a home for himself amid the city's renowned music scene. Gomes made his recording debut in 1998 on the Urban Electric label with Blues in Technicolor, followed by Sweet Stringin' Soul in 2000. In 2002 he switched to 33rd Street Records for Unity and proceeded to win the 2003 BluesWax Artist of the Year award. This accolade elevated Gomes to the top of the blues field, and consequently he was able to draw increasingly larger crowds to his live performances, which increased in frequency and scope. Though he didn't release another album until 2006, Gomes' endless touring kept him atop the blues field, as he continued to be nominated for BluesWax Artist of the Year awards several years in a row. Gomes' fourth album, Music Is the Medicine (2006), released on the Adrenaline Music label, was his first to chart, peaking at number four on the Billboard Top Blues Albums chart. During his supporting tour of the album, the February 27, 2007, show at the Triple Door in Seattle, WA, was recorded and subsequently released in 2008 as the album Live. It features his band, the New Soul Cowboys, comprised of David Karns (bass, vocals), Peter Lang (drums), and Dylan St. John (keyboards, vocals). That's a shame, because this concert captures Lightnin' at his beguiling best, spinning tales and blues magic with every track. His introductions are half the show, making even shopworn staples like "Baby Please Don't Go" and "My Babe" sound fresh. His guitar work is astounding, pulling off inventive leads while maintaining a constant boogie rhythm that makes other instruments superfluous. At age 15, when she taught herself how to play the guitar, she wrote her first song. Libby wrote at least 50 songs that summer, and continued to write throughout her time at Brush High School. When she was 16, Libby made her performance debut at a school function, embarking on her journey as a musician who loves being in the spotlight. When she was in her junior year in high school, Libby was featured on an all student-recorded and produced CD released by her high school's AV club. The CD, titled "I Was Here" featured two of her original songs. Libby also began to perform at local coffee shop open-mic nights, where she gained a lot of experience and comfort with the act of performing. People at Brush High School began to notice Libby's passion for music and she was invited to perform at various school functions and talent shows. When she moved onto the University of Dayton's campus in August 2011, she wasted no time. Right away, she dove into the music scene there by performing the second week of school at Thursday Night Live, a weekly showcase of student talent put on by the ArtStreet Caf??. By performing on a regular basis at Thursday Night Live, Libby was able to gain exposure around campus. In early 2012, Libby's original song, "Hurricane," was featured on "Thursday Night Live at ArtStreet Vol. 3," an annually released CD featuring some of the most talented artists on campus. By this point, Libby had drawn the attention of Only WonderUS Records, an independent label based in Dayton, OH. They started a working relationship to expand on Libby's performance opportunities, and to record and release her music. Meanwhile, Libby was soon getting asked to perform at larger shows, such as Rocktoberfest, an annual concert of favorite UD artists in the fall of her sophomore year. At this concert, Libby handed out free 5-song acoustic demos of original music, which helped to expand campus awareness of her music. The next two years were devoted toward performing as much as possible. Libby began performing with a band on and off campus. In the Spring of 2014, she officially began the process of recording her original song material for widespread release. In the Winter of 2015, she signed with Only WonderUS Records. The man who once recorded an album called The Great Fatsby is back, slimmed down and kicking as hard as ever on tracks like "Palace of the King" and "Allergic." West comes out jamming, backed by some pretty familiar names from the lexicon of classic rock, including Joe Lynn Turner, Kim Simmonds of Savoy Brown, Popa Chubby, and a little band called the Destroyers, who take time away from their day job playing with a fella named George Thorogood. When West rips into the old blues standard "Stormy Monday," it's take-no-prisoners electric blues, and his covers of "Tequila" and Otis Redding's "Respect" are Mountain-ized. (Speaking of "Respect," it's a little-known fact that West's first group, the Vagrants, had a version of that very same song out on a single in 1969 that was meant to be their key to the big time, but when Atco issued Aretha Franklin's now-legendary version, the Vagrants' record was blasted into obscurity.) "Raw Nerve" rocks with a real Billy Gibbons influence, and "The Cell" is an infectious life-in-prison tune that's meant to be played loud. Actually, the whole album sounds best with the volume knob set at 11. Oh, and if you're looking for blues, there's a ripsnorter penned by Leon Russell called "Me and My Guitar." "As Phat as It Gets" mixes the best elements of Frank Zappa, Black Sabbath, and Mountain into one smoldering tune about weight loss. Blues in Technicolor has some of the hottest blues guitar work you'll ever hear. One of the strongest tracks, "Misery for Company," has a B.B.King feel to it, with powerful emotional vocals and vibrant guitar work. "Bad Luck Child" conjures up memories of some of the great Texas blues bands with its forceful power chords and strong, driving lead guitar. Variety is not a key word in describing this album, and should not be the reason for choosing it. If you want really hardcore blues music, this fits the bill. An amazing guitarist who truly has a feel for blues arrangements is what you'll find in Gomes. His bandmates are equally as talented and certainly as focused. The other guitarist, Dan "King" Kahn, appears as a powerful entity in every tune. Drummer Brian "B.J." Jones and Junior Fuller on bass are the tightest rhythm section that you'll have the pleasure to listen to. For a bit of color, there are Roosevelt "Mad Hatter" Purifoy on the keyboards and three great background vocalists, Jim Hudson, Joan Collaso, and Jim Peterik. Blues in Technicolor would make a fine addition to anyone's blues collection. If you're a blues guitarist, this is a must have; the chops you'll pick up from the Anthony Gomes Band could be the cheapest guitar lesson you'll ever find.
