Coming out of the Boston club scene in the early '80s, the Butcher Axis (which also included members Chris Mann on bass and Derek Blevins on drums), issued such albums as 1983's self-titled debut, 1984's Stare at the Sun, and 1985's Along the Axis (Butcher dropped the Axis for such releases as 1986's Wishes and 1989's Pictures From the Front), opened for local Boston heroes the J. Geils Band in addition to other harder-edged bands, and issued a few singles that enjoyed some success on radio and MTV -- "Wishes," "Goodbye Saving Grace," and "Life Takes a Life." Butcher continued issuing solo albums in the '90s -- Positively the Blues (1995) and Electric Factory (1996) -- while a hits compilation (1998's The Best Of: Dreamers Would Ride) and an archival concert (1999's King Biscuit Flower Hour Presents) were also issued. The pair met in Nashville in 2005, instituting a songwriting partnership not long afterward. They clicked together musically and personally, beginning a romantic relationship along with their creative connection. Choosing the name Johnnyswim, they released their debut EP, 1-4, in 2008. The couple married in 2009 and relocated to Los Angeles. A second EP, called 5-8, appeared in 2010, supported by tours along with residencies in New York and Los Angeles. Home, Vol. 1, a third EP that emphasized their country roots, arrived in 2012. By this point they started getting attention from fashion quarters, including icons Tommy Hilfiger and Louis Vuitton, which in turn attracted the interest of labels. Johnny Smith may not be a musical household name, but his rural Missouri roots and Uncle Delaney and Aunt Bonnie Bramlett gave him some serious soul bona fides. Following a musical youth and a stint in the Marines, Smith returned to his second home of Southern California, skirting big fame, making smart and informed pop music. Now having relocated to the Bay Area, Smith has put together a vibrantly smart trio with guitarist Mark Holzinger and bassist Chris Justin. Smith contributes his acoustic Martin D35, harmonica, and the most expressive vocal capability this side of Joe Cocker. Smith sews all of these elements into a quilt with the Great American Songbook, and the results are beyond refreshing: they are elemental. Smith recasts several Sinatra warhorses, repackaging them for a new generation. The opener, "I've Got You Under My Skin, and "That Old Devil Moon kick things off in style. Add "Fly Me to the Moon, "There Will Never Be Another You and "Come Rain or Come Shine, and you have a mini-tribute to the Chairman of the Board. These songs are all dispatched with the primacy of folk blues and the rustic all-American vernacular of Smith, scrubbing them so fresh that the listener may gasp. But this Sinatra homage is merely the cream. Miles Davis' "All Blues is given a down-home treatment with Smith's rural harmonica and Midwestern delivery. I will bet few people have ever heard Miles covered like this. The pinnacle of the disc is the trifecta of soul jazz: Joe Zawinul's "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy, Bobby Timmons' "Moanin' and Horace Silver's "Song for my Father. Smith's densely expressive soul brogue sends these songs over the top. Instrumentally, San Francisco Bay Jazz sounds like a California version of Le Hot Club du France, coupling Smith's acoustic guitar with Holzinger's electric. Justin holds his own with a left-handed 4/4, keeping all the pieces skipping along. The tipple point is reached on "Moanin' for all three instumentalists. Recordings like San Francisco Bay Blues make writing about music a true pleasure. The stars are in line for Johnny Smith et al. and for us listeners also. Many great, talented musicians have been associated with the blues genre and Johnny Nicholas is one of those that will be included. His latest record, Fresh Air, is a collection of 13 tracks of differing subject matters of perfect blues for Johnny Nicholas. He creates a sold a blues song in "Kid Man Blues" while also incorporating other aspects of other genres like country and folk. An ode to blue collar work on the pipeline paired with a solid, nod-your-head, jammy sort of groove makes "Blues Time" a definite highlight of the record. The song "Red Light" may resonant with me the most out the 13-song set. It reminds me of all of the blues songs that I grew up listening to or overhearing my father listen to and loving. It has the elements of a classic blues song that I was taught and that have made this specific genre so special to me. The blues as a genre, to me, have always been one to touch on real life, but despite that sometimes sadness and negative disparity, they are able to create such an outgoing, upbeat personality (if you will) that other genres do not. Johnny Nicholas does a tremendous job illustrating this through his music. Nicholas taps in on the southern blues in "Bayou Blues" and does well incorporating instrumentation that represents that sub-genre of the blues. Jukes ', and it includes the 9 original tracks as well as 4 previously unreleased performances. b. 1938, Rolling Fork, Mississippi, USA. Dyer took up the harmonica when he was seven and as a teenager sat in with Smokey Wilson in a local club. He moved to Los Angeles in January 1958 and formed his own band, the Blue Notes, backing visitors such as J.B. Hutto, Jimmy Reed and Jimmy Rogers. He later formed a duo with George Smith, at that time still working as Little Walter Jnr. He recorded a couple of singles for Shakey Jake's Good Time label before cutting an album, Johnny Dyer And The LA Dukes, for Murray Brothers in 1983. Some of the tracks were later issued in Japan by Mina Records. In 1991, William Clarke included him on Hard Times, an anthology of contemporary LA bluesmen. Soon afterwards, he formed the Houserockers with guitarist Rick Homlstrom, who had previously recorded with Clarke, Billy Boy Arnold, Rod Piazza and Smokey Wilson. Listen Up managed to combine Holstrom's Pee Wee Crayton -influenced technique with Dyer's more down-home harmonica playing, including an effective version of Little Walter's 'Blue Midnight'. Hill's music is quite original, building from a hard bop foundation and moving into uncharted harmonic and rhythmic territory. His compositions and technique take chances; he often sounds restless, searching relentlessly for provocative voicings, rhythms, and phrases. Black Fire borrows from the avant-garde, but it's not part of it -- the structures remain quite similar to bop, and there are distinct melodies. Nevertheless, Hill and his band -- comprised of tenor saxophonist Joe Henderson, bassist Richard Davis, and drummer Roy Haynes -- are not content with the limitations of hard bop. Much of the music is informed by implied Afro-Cuban rhythms and modal harmonics, resulting in continually challenging and very rewarding music. Hill's complex chording is thoroughly impressive, and Henderson's bold solos are more adventurous than his previous bop outings would have suggested. Their expertise, along with the nimble, unpredictable rhythm section, help make Black Fire a modern jazz classic. To date, we have recorded 2 albums, Boogie With The John Frick Blues Band (2011) and Urban Crossroads, which will be released by Blueshine Records in January 2014. The band members are: John Frick (vocals, guitar, slide guitar), Leo Birza (vocals, keyboards), Michel De Man (drums) Tom Moerenhout (sax) and Nico Hart (bass guitar, backing vocals). Our music is heavily influenced by classic blues legends such as Elmore James, Muddy Waters, Bo Diddley, Freddy King and many more. The modern American and British blues guitar masters, like Peter Green, Rory Gallagher, Jimmie Vaughan, Sean Costello, and others, have also influenced our sound. Although comparisons can be made between our band and bands such as these, we have our own sound and an original approach to presenting our blues. We do however strive to recapture the energy and passion we hear in the music of the artists who inspire us. Having returned to The Netherlands from a four-year stay in Belgium in August 2009, I put together the final line-up of John Frick and the Blues Hombres, a band that had been performing in various guises in Holland and Belgium for a period of 10 years. Within 2 years however it evolved into the 3-piece John Frick Blues Band, which was established in January 2011, together with drummer, Michel de Man, and seasoned rockabilly guitarist, Roel Loen, stepping in temporarily on bass guitar. Later in 2011, after seeing performances on YouTube, I contacted keyboard player, Leo Birza, and asked him if he would join us. It turned out to be a perfect match and thus our joint adventures through Bluesville continued deftly. By November 2013 however, after having made a significant contribution to the development of the band, Roel was ready to leave the band to focus on his guitar playing. In stepped Nico Hart, who had been playing in Mak Wolven's band, The Insiders. Inspired by new and fresh prospects and the upcoming release of our album, Urban Crossroads, we decided to turn things up a few notches in order to raise the band's profile in the live music scene. Since our inception, we've played a number of venues in and around The Netherlands. A highlight for us was our tour to South Africa in 2012, during which we performed at Africa's most prestigious blues festival, The Table Mountain Blues Summit. Since then the band has continued along an exciting path of growth, development and expanding our blues horizons. Sippin' Cider [8:43] Saxophonist John Ellis recorded his latest CD in New Orleans, and three of its tunes are exactly the sort of greasy jazz-funk tunes you'd expect from a recording named One Foot in the Swamp. Two songs feature guest guitarist John Scofield in the sort of lazy-hazy funk settings he can sleep through, but, man, they really do sound good-especially the opening track "Happy," which is the hands-down best thing on the disc. While his New Orleans foot is obvious, Ellis is less forthcoming about the other, which-if you'll pardon the strained metaphor-he apparently keeps in the '70s. The rest of the CD features the sort of hard bop-to-jazz fusion that Miles Davis used to kick off that decade. Ellis also unearths some cheesy period-synth effects that should have probably stayed buried. With Aaron Goldberg on keys, Gregoire Maret on harmonica and guest trumpeter Nicholas Payton, Ellis works up some nice ensemble passages, but the band loses significant energy on the fusiony pieces. Readjust (3:58) 09. One Plus One (4:29) 10. Even Up The Score (3:12) I just received the newest release, Mustang Blues, from John Earl Walker and it digs in deep. Opening with Hey Baby, a cool 12 bar jam with a Allstars flare. John Earl Walker has been playing his guitar for some time and he lays on it early showing he knows his way around. Joined by Peter Harris on bass, Frank Diorio on drums and Gene Cordew on keys, this track is a great opener! Solid down, The Devil Follows Me, sounds like it's straight from Chicago and Walker slings his guitar with comfort. His riffs roll off of his fingertips like water pushed along nicely by Cordew on piano. Title track, Mustang Blues, has a funky R&B feel along the lines of Mustang Sally or Poke Salad Annie. This is a cool track with Steve Ress adding some real nice slide guitar work on the mix. Funkify is a guitar led instrumental with a funky beat and extended guitar soloing. I'm Already Gone is a modern blues style take on a soul feel. It has the blues basis with strong bass by Harris and keys by Cordew with Savoy Brown like guitar and vocals giving it a very cool bluesy sound. One of my favorite track on the release. My Mama Told Me is a nicely paced shuffle track with stinging guitar riffs. Slower drag blues, Superstorm Sandy Blues plays into any blues guitar's hand with a great tempo and plenty of space to improvise. Walker really breaks loose on this track with some great trem bends. Excellent! Readjust falls more into a rock feel with R&B anchor. Tandem guitar leads and one flat out solo near the end of the track cap it off. Another nice shuffle track, One Plus One, finds Walker using some real nice double stop techniques on his solos giving them a grittier feel and George Thorogood like vocals makes this another top track. Wrapping the release is Even Up The Score, a driving shuffle backed track with Walker on vocal and lead guitar.
