Silent Night Growing up in Lafayette, Louisiana surrounded by gospel, zydeco, blues, and Cajun music, Christian praise & worship singer and songwriter Lauren Daigle was always singing around the house as a child, but it wasn't until a serious illness kept her out of school for nearly two years beginning when she was 15 years old that she turned completely to music as both solace and a profession. Home-schooled during that time, music became Daigle's hedge against social isolation, and she began singing at her local church as a praise & worship leader. Her five-song debut EP, How Can It Be, produced by Paul Mabury, was released in late 2014 and was an immediate success on the Christian charts. In the spring of 2015, How Can It Be was expanded into a full-length LP and became both a critical and commercial success, crossing over to reach number 30 on the Billboard Top 200 chart and eventually going gold. Gomes treats his listeners to a more stripped down experience, using acoustic instrumentation and focusing on vocals. Gomes says, "I wanted to capture the spirit of the field hollers and get back to where the music came from." And that's exactly what he did. The album has an intro and outro that capture the essence of spirituals, with an eclectic variety of songs sandwiched in between. The album kicks off with an up-tempo blues called "Blues is Good." This song is when the listener gets a first glimpse of the acoustic sound that is held throughout the album. It even features an acoustic guitar solo. Gomes quickly switches gears with "Lady Soul," a '50s inspired ballad. Gomes' vocals shine on this track and are highlighted by outstanding backing vocals that are consistent throughout the album. "Love is Everything" is a unique treasure on the album. An uplifting song, sounding like it could have been taken straight from Toy Story, shows a softer side to Gomes. Gomes hits the sweet spot once again with "Let's Fall in Love," an up-beat tune that will make anybody wish they were in love. This tune is a duet with Gomes and Minnie Murphy, whose angelic voice is perfection and a great contrast to Gomes. As usual, Gomes has put out an album full of different sounds. There's something for everybody, old and young, on Before the Beginning. It's a timeless piece of art. Inmigrantes, Ombu's latest release, is pitched in the image of Zanelli's French-Argentine heritage as a merger of tango and jazz. More accurately, it's a five piece ensemble (give or take one or two depending on the song) anchored by the piano and bandoneon that uses the idea of jazz (mostly) and tango (less so) as a queue to push beyond the boundaries of either genre. The band seems to take great pride in their brand of professional experimentation, but with mixed results. Some of the very twists and turns likely to catch the ear of previously initiated, jazz-savvy Ombu fans may initially go over the heads of the unacquainted. The more memorable songs accomplish more with less. "Inmigrantes" stands out not only because it's more distinct, cohesive, and steady than most other songs on the album. It also blends and sways like one would expect of Zenlli's self-described journey through "rock, jazz, Latin music, tango, and Argentine folklore," at least as much a timeless mood in its own right as it is a derivative of any genre. "Tres Rosas," a much softer, slower, and simpler tune, maintains the same sort of non-manufactured, unified consistency, with a soul that's easy to grasp and hard to forget. In other songs, bright gems get lost in murky waters. "Vamos" begins with an optimistic, marching piano. 15 seconds in, a rambling avant-garde saxophone- bandoneon duet turns an easy listen into a chore. The song doesn't come into its own until the clutter is ditched for a cooler, more unified ragtime-bop cum bass solo. "Lo Que Sea" starts as what sounds like an alternate theme song for a 1980's whodunit TV series, only finding distinction when it strays off course, building around recurring guitar solos whose "too cool to be this right" mood should have made for the song's heart. Of the five remaining songs on the album "Papillon" and "Huija" are the most universally palatable. Both keep things afloat by avoiding the temptation to do too much. "Papillon" in particular balances baring soul through song while still managing to serve the masses. Judging this work as good or bad partly seems beside the point. Even within the confines of jazz and tango, it's an album more about artistic ambition than mass consumption. If you find yourself as drawn to Inmigrantes for its intentions as you do turned off by its peculiarities, give a listen to Memoria Colectiva, the group's 2011 release. It has all the flair of their latest album, but fewer of the complicated diversions.
