  3. Free Download Reflections of Prague: Journeys through the 20th Century by Ivan Margolius English | August 6, 2012 (2006) | ASIN: B008VDV5KM, ISBN: 0470022191 | True AZW3 | 318 pages | 2.8 MB Reflections of Prague is the story of how a Czech Jewish family become embroiled in the most tragic and tumultuous episodes of the twentieth century. Through their eyes we see the history of their beloved Prague, a unique European city, and the wider, political forces that tear their lives apart. Their moving story traces the major events, turmoil, oppression and triumphs of Europe through the last hundred years - from the Austro-Hungarian Empire to the First World War; from the vibrant artistic and intellectual life of Prague in the times of Kafka, the Capek Brothers and Masaryk to years of hunger in a Polish ghetto and the concentration camps of Hitler; from the tyrannous rule of Stalin to the rekindled hopes of Dubcek and the subsequent Soviet occupation to liberation under Havel. Told from Ivan's perspective, it is a poignant but uplifting tale that tells of life lived with purpose and conviction, in the face of personal suffering and sacrifice. 'A remarkable book. This archetypical story of the twentieth century is intertwined with an almost stream-of-consciousness narrative of the history of the Czechs, of Prague, interspersed with samples of exquisite poetry by great contemporary poets. So the narrative flows like Eliot's sweet Thames full of the debris of tragic lives, of horrors, of moments of beauty and testimonies of love - all against the backdrop of man's inhumanity.' Josef Škvorecký 'A poignant and vivid mémoire of a child searching for traces of his father, lost in the murky ideologies of post war Central Europe. An engrossing book.' 7. Free Download M. Watkins, "Rediscovering Colors: A Study in Pollyanna Realism " English | ISBN: 140200737X | 2002 | 223 pages | AZW3 | 332 KB In Rediscovering Colors: A Study in Pollyanna Realism, Michael Watkins endorses the Moorean view that colors are simple, non-reducible, properties of objects. Consequently, Watkins breaks from what has become the received view that either colors are reducible to certain properties of interest to science, or else nothing is really colored. What is novel about the work is that Watkins, unlike other Mooreans, takes seriously the metaphysics of colors. Consequently, Watkins provides an account of what colors are, how they are related to the physical properties on which they supervene, and how colors can be causally efficacious without the threat of causal overdetermination. Along the way, he provides novel accounts of normal conditions and non-human color properties. The book will be of interest to any metaphysician and philosopher of mind interested in colors and color perception. The American Left played a significant part in the origins of that movement, whose history has traditionally been focused on the later 1940's and early 1950's. This approach needs serious re-thinking in light of what took place in the later 1930's with the organization and activity of groups like the Southern Negro Youth Congress that brought both African-American and white workers and students together in the fight for economic and social justice. Thanks to the post-World War II Red Scare such groups as well as Left African-American leaders like Esther and James Jackson have been overlooked or excised from an exciting, controversial, and important story. With all due credit to the churches which played such a pivotal role in finally winning Blacks their civil rights, the early history involving the Left, workers of both races, and the labor unions must be assimilated into America's memory, for there were important continuities between what they did and the later church-based struggle. 13. Free Download Reconstruction of the Poet: Uncollected Works of Zbigniew Herbert edited and translated by Alissa Valles English | August 13, 2024 | ISBN: 0062883194 | True EPUB | 288 pages | 2.3 MB From one of Poland's most acclaimed poets comes a new collection of poems and plays spanning almost five decades and translated for the first time. Encapsulating the prolific work of the poet and playwright Zbigniew Herbert, Reconstruction of the Poet is both a celebration of a profound life of letters and a wide-ranging collection of never-before-published work that casts new light on a much-loved poet. Spanning from 1950 to 1998, this volume of work contains three plays-The Philosophers' Cave, The Other Room, and Reconstruction of the Poet-and over fifty poems. This collection takes readers through the mind of a man attempting to look at the ruins of a postwar world while seeking living sources of European culture, with poems commemorating contemporaries fallen in wartime, elevating erotic experience and friendship, and exploring political and metaphysical passions. A rich expansion of previously published works by Herbert, Reconstruction of the Poet is both an introduction for readers who might still be unfamiliar with this important poet's work and a fresh invitation for reflection for his longtime readers. Although historical reality clearly played a part in the way slaves were represented, Reconstructing the Slave stresses that this was not the primary purpose of these images, which reveal more about how slave-owners perceived or wanted to perceive slaves than the reality of slavery. Through an examination of lexical, visual and literary representations of slaves, the book considers how the image of the slave was used to justify, reinforce and naturalize slavery in ancient Greece. 15. Free Download Michael David Cohen, "Reconstructing the Campus: Higher Education and the American Civil War" English | 2012 | ISBN: 081393317X | EPUB | pages: 288 | 2.0 mb The Civil War transformed American life. Not only did thousands of men die on battlefields and millions of slaves become free; cultural institutions reshaped themselves in the context of the war and its aftermath. The first book to examine the Civil War's immediate and long-term impact on higher education, Reconstructing the Campus begins by tracing college communities' responses to the secession crisis and the outbreak of war. Students made supplies for the armies or left campus to fight. Professors joined the war effort or struggled to keep colleges open. The Union and Confederacy even took over some campuses for military use. Then moving beyond 1865, the book explores the war's long-term effects on colleges. Michael David Cohen argues that the Civil War and the political and social conditions the war created prompted major reforms, including the establishment of a new federal role in education. Reminded by the war of the importance of a well-trained military, Congress began providing resources to colleges that offered military courses and other practical curricula. Congress also, as part of a general expansion of the federal bureaucracy that accompanied the war, created the Department of Education to collect and publish data on education. For the first time, the U.S. government both influenced curricula and monitored institutions. The war posed special challenges to Southern colleges. Often bereft of students and sometimes physically damaged, they needed to rebuild. Some took the opportunity to redesign themselves into the first Southern universities. They also admitted new types of students, including the poor, women, and, sometimes, formerly enslaved blacks. Thus, while the Civil War did great harm, it also stimulated growth, helping, especially in the South, to create our modern system of higher education. Nichols Emerita Professor of Political Science at Baylor University, "Reconstructing Woody" English | ISBN: 0847689905 | 2000 | 272 pages | PDF | 7 MB For too long, the films of Woody Allen have been interpreted as expressions of deconstructionism, nihilism, and postmodern angst. In this pathbreaking new book, distinguished writer Mary P. Nichols challenges these assumptions by arguing that Allen's entire body of work, from Play It Again, Sam to Mighty Aphrodite, is actually an attempt to explore and reconcile the tension between art and life. As witty and complex as its subject, Reconstructing Woody shows why Allen, despite his recent personal turmoil, is immensely concerned with human ethics, goodness, and virtue. Ardent fans and strident detractors will view Woody Allen's films from an entirely new perspective. 17. Free Download Leon Cremonini, "Reconfiguring National, Institutional and Human Strategies for the 21st Century: Converging Internationalizations " English | ISBN: 303105105X | 2022 | 299 pages | PDF | 4 MB This book addresses policies and strategies on internationalization across very different higher education systems globally, including inter alia from South America, Asia and Africa. The volume zooms in on the interplay between the national, institutional and "human" levels of internationalization. The latter is especially novel in that it pays particular attention to how internationalization shapes individuals - rather than only to the effects on student learning or research productivity. The work expounds on (a) the role of internationalization in fostering ethical forms of integration and preparing citizens to engage in dialogue across those differences, (b) the possible trade-offs between private benefits and negative social effects, and © the contribution of internationalization to a "global community of minds". By discussing the human dimension, it becomes clear how internationalization can contribute to defining unique ways to confront today's societal challenges. Moreover, as the world is facing unprecedented challenges in the wake of the coronavirus, a specific chapter examines how the pandemic has made diversity among different student groups more explicit and what implications this holds for the globalisation of higher education. A range of methodologies was adopted, including qualitative (case studies and interviews) and quantitative (e.g. surveys). The book draws on both strategic frameworks and research projects to provide new perspectives on how internationalization plays out, especially linking strategies with human impacts. In the past twenty years, both arms technologies and various practices aimed at their control have continued to develop, but scholarly thinking has not kept up. This volume seeks to redress this scholarly neglect of the range of issues associated with the control of the means of violence, by asking the question: what does arms control mean in the 21st Century? In asking this question, the volume examines issues surrounding sovereignty, geopolitics, nuclear disarmament, securitization of space, technological developments, human rights, the clearance of landmines, the regulation of small arms and the control of the black market for arms and nuclear secrets. The book discusses terrorism with reference to the case of the suicide attacks in Beirut in 1983 and how the Obama administration is orientating its posture on nuclear arms. 19. Free Download Moyle Sherer, "Recollections of the Peninsula" English | 2011 | ISBN: 0554800845 | EPUB | pages: 206 | 0.3 mb Captain Sherer's record of service in the Peninsular War is second to none. A hard campaigner, he served with the 34th Foot at Busaco, Badajoz, Albuera, Arroyo Molinos, Vittoria and the Pyrenees, during which he was taken prisoner by the advancing French. In this, his service was no different to huge numbers of officers, a good number of whom left their memoirs to posterity. What marks out Sherer and his recollections is their quality. His descriptions of himself, his men and, above all, the actions that he took part in are of the first order, quoted with great frequency by historians - an example of which is below (from his description of the hard fighting at Albuera): 'The French grenadier caps, their arms, and the whole aspect of their frowning masses. It was a momentary, but grand sight: a heavy atmosphere of smoke again enveloped us, and few objects could be discerned at all, none distinctly... This murderous contest of musketry lasted long. We were the whole time progressively advancing and shaking the enemy. 'At a distance of about twenty yards from them we received orders to charge; we had ceased firing, cheered, and had our bayonets in the charging position, when a body of the enemy's horse was discovered under the rising ground, ready to take advantage of our impetuosity. Already, however, the French infantry, alarmed by our preparatory cheers, which always indicate the charge, had broke and fled.' A fantastic memoir that deserves reading and re-reading. The author, Joshua Duke, was a British officer in the Bengal Medical Service, attached to "our native army in India." The war began in Nov. 1878 when Great Britain, fearful of what it saw as growing Russian influence in Afghanistan, invaded the country from British India. The first phase of the conflict ended in May 1879 with the Treaty of Gandamak, which permitted the Afghans to maintain internal sovereignty but forced them to cede control over their foreign policy to the British. Fighting resumed in Sept. 1879 after an anti-British uprising in Kabul that resulted in the death of Sir Louis Cavagnari, the British resident in Kabul and a negotiator of the Treaty of Gandamak, and of nearly all the British soldiers at the residency. The Kabul Field Force, commanded by General Sir Frederick Roberts and composed of British and Indian army regiments, was sent to Kabul to restore order and take revenge. This book offers a vivid eye-witness account of the main incidents of the war, including the bloody siege of the Sherpur Cantonment of Dec. 1879, in which Afghan forces mounted a nearly successful attack on the Anglo-Indian forces, the relief march from Kabul to Kandahar in Aug. 1880, and the climactic Battle of Kandahar in Sept. 1880 that ended the war. In addition to his account of the military operations, Duke provides insights from his perspective as a medical officer, for example, on the treatment of wounds by traditional methods by the Afghan forces. The book is illustrated with a frontispiece photograph of Roberts and maps and drawings of important battles and fortresses. The appendix contains a summary explanation of the causes of both Anglo-Afghan wars, the full text of the Treaty of Gandamak, and copies of correspondence between Russian and Afghan authorities that were found by the British when they occupied Kabul. This book covers the early part of the author's life and relates Donaldson's deprived Glasgow childhood, his enlistment in the army, and his experiences in Iberia. After leaving the army in 1814, he wrote up his recollections in 1817 while attempting to study medicine. Dire necessity - including the burden of supporting ten children - forced him to resume military life as a recruiting officer. Tragically, he died in 1830 of lung disease while studying anatomy in Paris, at the early age of just thirty-seven. As such they hold a charm of their own apart from a number of the more swashbuckling accounts of soldier's adventures in the British army during the Napoleonic and Victorian periods. That is not to say that they are staid in any way but written from a more modest view-point than some. Joining the British army at the tender age of fifteen as an ensign in the 78th Regiment of Foot, he took part on the clash at Maida in which an out-numbered British force decisively defeated the French division of General Reynier. Posted to the main Peninsular theatre of war, he took part on the battles of Talavera, Busaco and Fuentes d'Oñoro. A humane and reasonable man capable of great bravery, such as going into French lines to recover the body of his dead friend, Anderson's memoirs have deserved a greater audience than the circle of his family and were duly published after his death. 25. Free Download Professor Thomas Morris, "Recollections of Military Service in 1813, 1814, and 1815, through Germany, Holland, and France: including some Details of the Battles of Quatre Bras and Waterloo" English | 2017 | ISBN: 134074189X | EPUB | pages: 244 | 1.0 mb This account of military service during the Peninsular War penned by the late sergeant of the 2nd Battalion of the 73rd Regiment of Foot, Thomas Morris, who was not even born by the time of the outbreak of the French Revolution in 1789. At the tender age of 16 in 1812 he became a substitute volunteer in the British Army, enticed by the tales of derring-do and the £60 bounty paid to each man. Even at that young age he had a fine eye for detail and anecdote which he took to Belgium to join the forces pressing Napoleon back into France. He served at the battle of Waterloo in which his regiment was heavily engaged in some of the fiercest fighting charged by French Cavalry no less than 11 times during the battle and bombarded by French artillery. It remained in square without breaking. The 2nd/73rd lost 6 officers and 225 men killed and wounded, the second heaviest casualties suffered by a line infantry regiment.
