Free Download Susanne Bregnbaek, "Fragile Elite: The Dilemmas of China's Top University Students" English | 2016 | ISBN: 0804797781, 0804796076 | PDF | pages: 185 | 4.6 mb China's One Child Policy and its rigorous national focus on educational testing are well known. But what happens to those "lucky" few at the very top of the pyramid: elite university students in China who grew up under the One Child Policy and now attend the nation's most prestigious universities? How do they feel about having made it to the top of an extremely competitive educational system-as their parents' only child? What pressures do they face, and how do they cope with the expectations associated with being the best? Fragile Elite explores the contradictions and perplexities of being an elite student through immersive ethnographic research conducted at two top universities in China. Susanne Bregnbæk uncovers the intimate psychological strains students suffer under the pressure imposed on them by parents and state, where the state acts as a parent and the parents reinforce the state. Fragile Elite offers fascinating insights into the intergenerational tensions at work in relation to the ongoing shift in educational policy and definition of what a "quality" student, child, and citizen is in contemporary China. 3. Free Download Four Ways of Thinking: A Journey into Human Complexity by David Sumpter English | August 27th, 2024 | ISBN: 1250806267 | 320 pages | True EPUB | 12.16 MB Acclaimed mathematician David Sumpter shares practical and insightful solutions for navigating the chaos and complexity of our lives What is the best way to think about the world? How often do we consider how our own thinking might impact the way we approach our daily decisions? Could it help or hinder our relationships, our careers, or even our health? As acclaimed mathematician David Sumpter shows, thinking about thinking is something we rarely do, yet it is something science questions all the time. He has spent decades studying what we could all learn from the mindsets of scientists, and Four Ways of Thinking is the result. Here he reveals the four easily applied approaches to our problems: statistical, interactive, chaotic, and complex. Combining engaging personal experience with practical advice and inspiring tales of groundbreaking scientific pioneers (with a tiny bit of number crunching along the way), Sumpter shows how these tried and tested methods can help us with every conundrum, from how to bicker less with our partners to pitching to a tough crowd-and in doing so, change our lives. 4. Free Download Martin Heidegger, "Four Seminars " English | ISBN: 0253343631 | 2003 | 144 pages | AZW3 | 2 MB In Four Seminars, Heidegger reviews the entire trajectory of his thought and offers unique perspectives on fundamental aspects of his work. First published in French in 1976, these seminars were translated into German with Heidegger's approval and reissued in 1986 as part of his Gesamtausgabe, volume 15. Topics considered include the Greek understanding of presence, the ontological difference, the notion of system in German Idealism, the power of naming, the problem of technology, danger, and the event. Heidegger's engagements with his philosophical forebears―Parmenides, Heraclitus, Kant, and Hegel―continue in surprising dialogues with his contemporaries―Husserl, Marx, and Wittgenstein. While providing important insights into how Heidegger conducted his lectures, these seminars show him in his maturity reflecting back on his philosophical path. Free Download Michael Lambek, Veena Das, Didier Fassin, "Four Lectures on Ethics: Anthropological Perspectives" English | 2015 | ISBN: 0990505073 | PDF | pages: 232 | 1.2 mb Anthropology has recently seen a lively interest in the subject of ethics and comparative notions of morality and freedom. This masterclass brings together four of the most eminent anthropologists working in this field-Michael Lambek, Veena Das, Didier Fassin, and Webb Keane-to discuss, via lectures and responses, important topics facing anthropological ethics and the theoretical debates that surround it. The authors explore the ways we understand morality across many different cultural settings, asking questions such as: How do we recognize the ethical in different ethnographic worlds? What constitutes agency and awareness in everyday life? What might an anthropology of ordinary ethics look like? And what happens when ethics approaches the political in both Western and non-Western societies. Contrasting perspectives and methods-and yet in complimentary ways-this masterclass will serve as an essential guide for how an anthropology of ethics can be formulated in the twenty-first century. 11. Free Download Benda Hofmeyr Professor of Philosophy, "Foucault and Governmentality: Living to Work in the Age of Control " English | ISBN: 1786611724 | 2022 | 192 pages | PDF | 932 KB Using empirical research, this book critically analyses the dynamics, culture and forms of subjectivity of neo-liberalism. It draws upon existing historical, sociological and cultural studies to excavate the geneaology of the capitalist subject with specific emphasis on the neo-liberal govern-mental context of the last four decades. Michel Foucault's notion of governmentality, which he developed in his Collège de France lectures of 1978 and 1979, is employed as an hermeneutic key to historically situate and critically analyse the regimes of subject-formation characteristic of neo-liberal capitalism. The current crisis in capitalism is surveyed, along with earlier forms of capitalism, and the transition in power from discipline to control is explored. The study concludes by tracing the changing face of Homo Economicus in relation to resistance levelled against neo-liberal capitalism and the resultant metamorphises it has undergone. World War II was a conflict over land and resources but also democracy and freedom. The 1920s and '30s had seen liberal democracy losing the fight against challengers from the Left and Right. By the end of the 1930s, Hitler had destroyed the few functioning democracies in Europe, and at the end of 1941, the future looked bleak, even as the US entered the war after the attack on Pearl Harbour. But the year that began in such fear ended with the Allies winning victories everywhere-on land, on the sea and in the air. 15. Free Download Jay A. Stout, "Fortress Ploesti: The Campaign to Destroy Hitler's Oil" English | 2003 | ISBN: 1932033181, 1935149393 | EPUB | pages: 224 | 3.6 mb Unlike previous books on Ploesti, Jay Stout goes well beyond the famous big and bloody raid of August 1943 and depicts the entire 1944 strategic campaign of twenty-plus missions that all but knocked Ploesti out of the war and denied the German war machine the fuel and lubricants it so desperately needed. While Fortress Ploesti is the narrative history of the entire air campaign to deny the Ploesti oil complex to the Axis powers, it is also a launching point for the author's inquiries into many aspects of the American strategic bombing effort in World War II. It delivers across the board. Stout, who served as a Marine F/A-18 pilot in the First Gulf War, asks questions about aviation combat history and technique that any modern combat pilot would be dying to ask. He carries the ball far beyond the goal post set by all other Ploesti historians. He has gone out of his way to describe the defenses throughout the campaign, and he brings in the voices of Ploesti's defenders to complement the tales of Allied airmen who brought Ploesti to ruin. He describes the role of the bombers, as well as that of the fighters, the ant-aircraft defenses, even the technique of obscuring the Ploesti complex with smoke. In the end, Stout's narrative describes the entire Ploesti effort for the very first time in print, and, by proxy, guides the reader through the intricacies of the entire Allied strategic bombing campaign in Europe, and all the weapons and techniques the Axis powers used to parry it. His lucid presentation of complex issues at the tactical and strategic levels is impressive. 16. Free Download Diane Glancy, "Fort Marion Prisoners and the Trauma of Native Education" English | ISBN: 0803249675 | 2014 | 136 pages | AZW3 | 873 KB At the end of the Southern Plains Indian wars in 1875, the War Department shipped seventy-two Kiowa, Cheyenne, Arapaho, Comanche, and Caddo prisoners from Fort Sill, Oklahoma, to Fort Marion in St. Augustine, Florida. These most resistant Native people, referred to as "trouble causers," arrived to curious, boisterous crowds eager to see the Indian warriors they knew only from imagination. Fort Marion Prisoners and the Trauma of Native Education is an evocative work of creative nonfiction, weaving together history, oral traditions, and personal experience to tell the story of these Indian prisoners. Resurrecting the voices and experiences of the prisoners who underwent a painful regimen of assimilation, Diane Glancy's work is part history, part documentation of personal accounts, and a search for imaginative openings into the lives of the prisoners who left few of their own records other than carvings in their cellblocks and the famous ledger books. They learned English, mathematics, geography, civics, and penmanship with the knowledge that acquiring the same education as those in the U.S. government would be their best tool for petitioning for freedom. Glancy reveals stories of survival and an intimate understanding of the Fort Marion prisoners' predicament. 18. Free Download Forgotten Island: The WWII Story of One Sailor's Survival on Japanese-Occupied Guam by John J. Domagalski English | July 16, 2024 | ISBN: 888845280X | 336 pages | EPUB | 4.76 Mb Forgotten Island is the story of Navy radioman George Tweed, who was trapped on Japanese-occupied Guam during World War II, and the American liberation of the island. The opening days of World War II in the Pacific found the island of Guam in the Mariana Islands to be an isolated American possession that was nearly surrounded by Japanese territory. The island came under immediate attack with the start of hostilities. The small garrison of marines, navy personnel, and Guamanians surrendered to Japanese invaders after offering only token resistance. However, not all of the American servicemen capitulated. Navy radioman George Ray Tweed was one of six sailors who disappeared into the thick interior jungle. The Japanese occupiers quickly solidified control over the island and began a ruthless search for the missing sailors. Five of the Americans were eventually found and mercilessly killed. The sole survivor, Tweed spent the next thirty-one months on the run-sometimes literally running for his life-staying just one step ahead of his hunters. He continually eluded his pursuers through the use of his survival skills, some good luck, and the generous help of Guamanian civilians, often at great risk to their own safety. During the two and a half years the sailor remained in hiding, American forces were fighting their way across the Pacific. The events reached a crescendo in the summer of 1944 with the arrival of the American fleet in Guam. A major naval battle, an amphibious invasion, the rescue of George Tweed, and a brutal fight to liberate Guam all combine to bring this epic story to a close. Blustein, "Forgiveness and Remembrance: Remembering Wrongdoing in Personal and Public Life" English | 2014 | ISBN: 0199329400, 0199329397 | PDF | pages: 353 | 19.9 mb Forgiveness and Remembrance examines the complex moral psychology of forgiving, remembering, and forgetting in personal and political contexts. It challenges a number of entrenched ideas that pervade standard philosophical approaches to interpersonal forgiveness and offers an original account of its moral psychology and the emotions involved in it. The volume also uses this account to illuminate the relationship of forgiveness to political reconciliation and restorative political practices in post-conflict societies. Memory is another central concern that flows from this, since forgiveness is tied to memory and to emotions associated with the memory of injury and injustice. In its political function, memory of wrongdoing - and of its victims - is embodied in processes of memorialization, such as the creation of monuments, commemorative ceremonies, and museums. The book casts light on the underexplored relationship of memorialization to transitional justice and politically consequential interpersonal forgiveness. It examines the symbolism and the symbolic moral significance of memorialization as a political practice, reflects on its relationship to forgiveness, and, finally, argues that there are moral responsibilities associated with memorialization that belong to international actors as well as to states. Free Download Ian Klaus, "Forging Capitalism: Rogues, Swindlers, Frauds, and the Rise of Modern Finance " English | ISBN: 0300181949 | 2014 | 287 pages | AZW3 | 726 KB A riveting history of raw capitalism that exposes the unscrupulousness at its heart Vice is endemic to Western capitalism, according to this fascinating, wildly entertaining, often startling history of modern finance. Ian Klaus's Forging Capitalism demonstrates how international financial affairs in the nineteenth century were conducted not only by gentlemen as a noble pursuit but also by connivers, thieves, swindlers, and frauds who believed that no risk was too great and no scheme too outrageous if the monetary reward was substantial enough. Taken together, the grand deceptions of the ambitious schemers and the determined efforts to guard against them have been instrumental in creating the financial establishments of today. In a story teeming with playboys and scoundrels and rich in colorful and amazing events, Klaus chronicles the evolution of trust through three distinct epochs: the age of values, the age of networks and reputations, and, ultimately, in a world of increased technology and wealth, the age of skepticism and verification. In today's world, where the questionable dealings of large international financial institutions are continually in the spotlight, this extraordinary history has great relevance, offering essential lessons in both the importance and the limitations of trust. Free Download Guy Beiner, "Forgetful Remembrance: Social Forgetting and Vernacular Historiography of a Rebellion in Ulster" English | 2018 | ISBN: 019874935X, 0198864191 | PDF | pages: 728 | 133.3 mb Forgetful Remembrance examines the paradoxes of what actually happens when communities persistently endeavour to forget inconvenient events. The question of how a society attempts to obscure problematic historical episodes is addressed through a detailed case study grounded in the north-eastern counties of the Irish province of Ulster, where loyalist and unionist Protestants - and in particular Presbyterians - repeatedly tried to repress over two centuries discomfiting recollections of parti[beeep]tion, alongside Catholics, in a republican rebellion in 1798. By exploring a rich variety of sources, Beiner makes it possible to closely follow the dynamics of social forgetting. His particular focus on vernacular historiography, rarely noted in official histories, reveals the tensions between professed oblivion in public and more subtle rituals of remembrance that facilitated muted traditions of forgetful remembrance, which were masked by a local culture of reticence and silencing. Throughout Forgetful Remembrance, comparative references demonstrate the wider relevance of the study of social forgetting in Northern Ireland to numerous other cases where troublesome memories have been concealed behind a veil of supposed oblivion. Ancient and wise, trees and plants watch over us-sheltering us and guiding us. At the same time, it is our calling to cherish and honor them, as we work together in eternal reciprocity. It is a sacred-magical-exchange that we can honor with rituals, spell work, and intention. Readers will explore the magic of the forest first by learning to create their own sacred grove, whether they live deep within nature or in the very center of a city. From there, Forest Magicexplores the year in two parts-The Oak King, for the first half of the year, and The Holly King, for the second half. Each section explores pagan holidays and celebrations associated with nature's rhythms, rituals and practices for communing with and tending to the plants that thrive during these times, discussion of the magical properties associated with each tree and shrub, and plant-based healing.
