  1. Free Download Everywhere (The Collected Short Stories and Novellas of Ian R. MacLeod) by Ian R. MacLeod English | May 29, 2019 | ISBN: 9781625674418, ASIN: B07SKC16XM | True EPUB | 426 pages | 0.6 MB Welcome to the first half of the collected worlds of one of fiction's great myth-makers. Blending naturalistic settings with real-and unreal-histories, dark presents, strange pasts and star-flung futures, Ian R. MacLeod's multi award-winning stories defy easy classification, but are always vividly elegant, compelling, and filled with wonder. In Grownups, a young boy discovers the strange facts of life in a very different-yet also alarmingly recognizable-world, whilst New Light on the Drake Equation focusses on one man's quest to prove there is still a chance of intelligent life existing beyond Earth, and in Ephemera a very strange librarian has final charge of all the world's knowledge and culture, and The Master Miller's Tale tells of obsessive love as a bucolic past dissolves into the magics of industry, iron and steam. Nothing in MacLeod's visions is ever quite what it seems, yet they remain deeply real and involving. If you haven't read MacLeod before, you can expect to be moved and surprised. If you have, then you need no further introduction other than to say that Everywhere-and its companion volume Nowhere, which features many of his best shorter stories-represent a generous and wide-ranging summary of his work, along with many insights into the creative process which are provided by the fresh introductions and afterwords. 3. Free Download Everything You Need to Know About the Pill (but were too afraid to ask) by Kate Muir English | ISBN: 1398529516 | PDF | 3.58 Mb An eye-opening, no-holds-barred guide to contraception, written by campaigner, journalist and documentary-maker Kate MuirEverything You Need to Know About the Pill (but were too afraid to ask) is the thinking-woman's guide to contraception, bringing you answers to all those questions that have been hidden behind a veneer of misplaced shame, bad science and centuries of patriarchy. What's happening to my body - and my mind? Which method of contraception is best for me? Do I really need to take a pill break every three weeks? What about men - where's their pill?! Muir draws on interviews with the leading medical experts in the field, interlaced with her own tumultuous journey with different types of contraception and the personal stories of women from all walks of life, sharing their varied experiences and hard-earned wisdom. Muir also questions why the current medical establishment is getting contraception so wrong, as she debunks the myths and exposes the sloppy science and hysterical headlines that have had a negative impact on women's health for the last twenty years. This ground-breaking guide is a social, cultural and scientific exploration into a criminally overlooked and under-discussed part of women's lives. It is a manifesto for change, calling for equality in healthcare and an entirely new - and long overdue - approach to women's health. *Praise for Everything You Need to Know About the Menopause (But Were Too Afraid to Ask):* 'I have huge respect for Kate. Then she hears a woman screaming for help, and the taste of saltwater overwhelms her. Just as Lexi's throat begins to close, the man leaves the room and the sensation of drowning abruptly stops. Later that night, the man dies of an overdose, and Lexi learns about the traumatic boating accident that killed his sons and tore his family apart. Lexi wants to believe it's a bizarre coincidence. Any other explanation would disrupt the normal, comfortable life she's worked so hard to build. Lexi is an expert at denial, a pro at fitting in. But as more strange events unfold, Lexi can't deny the truth: something is changing inside her. She feels other people's emotions, sometimes even glimpses their private memories. By embracing her new abilities, Lexi can help heal people―though not until she confronts the past she's spent a lifetime burying. But when a vision reveals her husband is in danger, Lexi must decide: face her inner demons or lose the person she loves most. Atmospheric and emotional, Everything We Never Knew is the gripping story of one woman embracing her power, no matter what the world thinks. 6. Free Download UNIV PLYMOUTH, "Everything Gardens and Other Stories: Growing Transition Culture" English | 2015 | ASIN: B011C6COH2 | EPUB | pages: 560 | 1.1 mb The Transition movement is more than an instrumental strategy to address climate change and fossil fuel shortage. It is a collective form of life. Against the tendency to reduce social movements to mission statements and policy solutions, this book insists on de-strategising the development of Transition. It argues that the flourishing of its distinctive culture is open to both uncertainty and paradox, and resistant to prediction and mapping. Everything Gardens and Other Storiesfocuses instead on the body as the site where politics begins, engaging with the disquiets and anxieties that instigate the development of Transition practices: from Inner Transition, to food and currency activism, down to the REconomy project. Borne out of a sociologist's accompaniment of Transition in Totnes, Everything Gardens and Other Stories inaugurates a new mode of accessing the everyday politics and ethical dilemmas that surface in the process of cultural innovation. So why when it arrives does she find herself sprawled on her hallway floor, crying uncontrollably? Why, instead of a sense of triumph, does a crippling depression threaten to overwhelm her? Why does the support and stability of her family and friends feel so suffocating? And why, torn between her flatmate George - good, kind, reliable George - and cold, indifferent Patrick, does she only seem capable of making choices that cause her pain? The euro, a currency just over a decade old, was under severe pressure and there was growing speculation about Greece leaving the Eurozone and thereby fracturing the common currency, leading potentially to an unraveling of the euro. Against this backdrop, urgent negotiations were launched to pull Greece and Europe back from the brink of disaster. This is the inside story of those negotiations. This authoritative and accessible survey, written by a group of the leading experts in the field, provides a reliable, in-depth, up-to-date account of the resistance in each region and country along with an assessment of its effectiveness and of the Axis reaction to it. An extensive introduction by the editors Philip Cooke and Ben H. Shepherd draws the threads of the varied movements and groups together, highlighting the many differences and similarities between them. The book will be a significant contribution to the frequently heated debates about the importance of individual resistance movements. Kiernan, Tariq Ali English | April 9, 2024 | ISBN: 1804291072 | 304 pages | PDF | 3.27 Mb New edition of a trail-blazing history of imperial warfare European Empires from Conquest to Collapse is a vivid anticolonial reckoning with the history of imperial warfare. Global in scope, it deftly surveys the fighting forces and military engagements of the Great Powers, from the British in India to the scramble for Africa. Victor Kiernan lays bare the doctrines and realities of colonial fighting, dispelling official legends. Europe often boasted that coloni- alism was 'civilised', but the facts show it could be barbaric. Kiernan traces how guerrilla insurgency against colonial oppression developed into one of the most sophisticated branches of the art of war. 22. Free Download Antje Wiener, "European Citizenship Practice: Building Institutions Of A Non-state" English | 2018 | ISBN: 081333358X, 0813336899 | EPUB | pages: 360 | 1.1 mb Although great efforts have been made to understand citizenship, it has remained a contested concept, largely because of the problem of the changing relationship between citizens and their community of membership or belonging. The European Union poses the most recent and dramatic change to this definition of citizenship. Arguing that citizenship must be explored from a perspective that takes this continual change into account, Antje Wiener develops the concept of citizenship practice-the process of policymaking and/or political parti[beeep]tion which contributes to creating the terms of citizenship. The approach draws on both comparative social-historical literature on the state and the new historical institutionalism in European integration theories. "European" Citizenship Practice advances a discursive analysis of citizenship practice based on these related bodies of literature, which lie at the heart of this important contribution to citizenship studies. 23. Free Download European Cities and Towns: 400-2000 by Peter Clark English | April 15, 2009 | ISBN: 0199562733, 0198700547 | True PDF | 432 pages | 1.7 MB Since the Middle Ages Europe has been one of the most urbanized continents on the planet and Europe's cities have firmly stamped their imprint on the continent's economic, social, political, and cultural life. This study of European cities and towns from the fall of the Roman Empire to the present day looks both at regional trends from across Europe and also at the widely differing fortunes of individual communities on the roller coaster of European urbanization. Taking a wide-angled view of the continent that embraces northern and eastern Europe as well as the city systems of the Mediterranean and western Europe, it addresses important debates ranging from the nature of urban survival in the post-Roman era to the position of the European city in a globalizing world. The book is divided into three parts, dealing with the middle ages, the early modern period, and the nineteenth and twentieth centuries - with each part containing chapters on urban trends, the urban economy, social developments, cultural life and landscape, and governance. Throughout, the book addresses key questions such as the role of migration, including that of women and ethnic minorities; the functioning of competition and emulation between cities, as well as issues of inter-urban cooperation; the different ways civic leaders have sought to promote urban identity and visibility; the significance of urban autonomy in enabling cities to protect their interests against the state; and not least why European cities and towns over the period have been such pressure cookers for new ideas and creativity, whether economic, political, or cultural. 24. Free Download Brigid Laffan, "Europe's Union in Crisis: Tested and Contested" English | 2019 | ISBN: 0367229765, 1138040037 | EPUB | pages: 208 | 1.1 mb The European Union faces a set of inter-related crises that it struggles to contain and address. By exploring how the EU responds to crises and conflict, this volume addresses both its resilience and vulnerability. The EU faces significant challenges: European integration is increasingly politicised; democratic politics within member states are increasingly volatile; challenger parties threaten the status quo; and party systems are shifting throughout Europe. These crises test both the EU and individual states, especially those that had to exchange interdependence in the Union for dependence on the Troika. Despite the tension of hard times, this volume points to patterns of continuity and change as the single market, somewhat side-lined and forgotten in the heat of crises, retains its role as the hard core of the Union and the EU's most significant achievement. This book was originally published as a special issue of West European Politics. 25. Free Download Wade Jacoby, "Europe and the Management of Globalization" English | 2013 | ISBN: 0415847494, 0415592135 | EPUB | pages: 170 | 1.1 mb European politicians often speak of their efforts to 'manage globalization.' At one level, this is merely a rhetorical device to make globalization more palatable to citizens and prove that policy-makers are still firmly in control of their country's fate. This volume argues that the advocacy of managed globalization goes beyond rhetoric and actually has been a primary driver of major European Union (EU) policies in the past twenty years. The EU has indeed tried to manage globalization through the use of five major mechanisms: 1) expanding policy scope 2) exercising regulatory influence 3) empowering international institutions 4) enlarging the territorial sphere of EU influence, and 5) redistributing the costs of globalization. These mechanisms are neither entirely novel, nor are they always effective but they provide the contours of an approach to globalization that is neither ad hoc deregulation, nor old-style economic protectionism. The recent financial crisis may have seemed initially to vindicate the European efforts to manage globalization, but it also represented the limits of such efforts without the full parti[beeep]tion of the US and China. The EU cannot rig the game of globalization, but it can try to provide predictability, oversight, and regularity with rules that accommodate European interests. This book was based on a special issue of Journal of European Public Policy.
