  2. Free Download Vanessa Theme Ament, "Divergent Tracks: How Three Film Communities Revolutionized Digital Film Sound" English | ISBN: 1501359223 | 2021 | 176 pages | AZW3 | 3 MB By examining three case studies of award-winning soundtracks from cult films-Barton Fink (1991), Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992), and The English Patient (1996)-it becomes clear that major American film communities, when confronted with the initial technological changes of the 1990s, experienced similar challenges with the inelegant transition from analogue to digital. However, their cultural and structural labor differences governed different results. Vanessa Ament, author of The Foley Grail (2009), rather than defining the 1990s as an era of technological determinism-a superficial reading-it is best understood as one in which sound professionals became more viable as artists, collaborated in sound design authorship, and influenced this digital transition to better accommodate their needs and desires in their work. 3. Free Download Dive!: Australian Submariners at War by Mike Carlton English | August 6, 2024 | ISBN: 1761342894 | 648 pages | EPUB | 7.38 Mb Submariners are a special breed. Not for them a life on the ocean wave, the fresh air and sunshine of other naval sailors. With stealth and daring they go deep and dark, alone and unseen, in often dangerous waters. They sometimes call themselves the Silent Service, with good reason. Australian submariners have done extraordinary deeds in the First and Second World Wars and, more recently, the Cold War. In April 1915 the Australian submarine AE2 penetrated the Dardanelles Strait to 'run amuck', a historic feat that was a turning point in the Gallipoli campaign. Eventually captured, her crew spent three harrowing years as prisoners-of-war in Turkey. In the Second World War Australian naval volunteers made their name serving in midget submarines, attacking Hitler's mightiest battleship, the Tirpitz, in the icy waters of a Norwegian fjord. Later, they fought the Japanese in the South China Sea. And in the last half of the twentieth century, RAN submarines played a vital role tracking the Soviet navy in the Pacific Ocean. One wrong move could have led to outright war. The risks they ran, the perils they met and the intelligence they gathered are still classified Top Secret. Submarines and the sailors who serve in them have been and remain the tip of the spear of Australia's defences. For the first time, this is their unique story. 4. Free Download Lt.-Cmdr. Robert A. Winston, "Dive Bomber: Learning To Fly The Navy's Fighting Planes" English | 2015 | ASIN: B06XG4MQ58 | EPUB | pages: 220 | 1.2 mb Seized by an urge to learn flying Robert Alexander Winston would not be put off by the high fees charged by the private firms; he decided to join the nascent Naval Air Service in 1935. In this fast paced, witty and engaging memoir he describes his time spent as a Naval Cadet in learning to fly at the NAS Pensacola. He passed his carrier qualification aboard USS Saratoga, before being assigned to Fighting Squadron 6 flying off the USS Enterprise. His four term hitch in the Navy ended in 1939 and he entered the Naval Reserve. Robert A. Winston was born in Washington, Indiana, in 1907 and graduated from Indiana University. He worked for The New York Times and The New York News for five years before starting flight training with the navy in 1935. He flew in fighting squadrons on both coasts and as an instructor at Pensacola, and he wrote about his initial aviation training in Dive Bomber, published in 1939 when Winston held the rank of lieutenant. In his second book, Aces Wild, he chronicled his experiences in Europe during 1939-40 as a test pilot accompanying a consignment of fighters destined for Finland. Back on active duty in the United States, he served as a flight instructor, then in the public relations office in Washington, D.C. After the attack on Pearl Harbor he was assigned to combat duty in the Pacific, which he recounts in Fighting Squadron, published in 1946 when Winston was a commander. At the end of the war he was serving on Admiral Nimitz's staff on Guam. From there he moved to Stockholm, where he served as the naval air attaché. He subsequently determines the type of cases over which each institution had jurisdiction and studies the procedures by which each functioned. 10. Free Download Catherine Kevin, "Dispossession and the Making of Jedda: Hollywood in Ngunnawal Country" English | 2020 | ISBN: 1785273507 | EPUB | pages: 130 | 1.4 mb 'Dispossession and the Making of Jedda (1955)' newly locates the story of the genesis of the iconic 1955 film 'Jedda' (dir. Chauvel) and, in turn, 'Jedda' becomes a cultural context and point of reference for the history of race relations it tells. It spans the period 1930-1960 but is focused on the 1950s, the decade when Charles Chauvel looked to the ample resources of his friends in the rich pastoral Ngunnawal country of the Yass Valley to make his film. This book has four locations. The homesteads of the wealthy graziers in the Yass Valley and the Hollywood Mission in Yass town are its primary sites. Also relevant are the Sydney of the cultural and moneyed elites, and the Northern Territory where 'Jedda' was made. Its narrative weaves together stories of race relations at these four sites, illuminating the film's motifs as they are played out in the Yass Valley, against a backdrop of Sydney and looking North towards the Territory. It is a reflection on family history and the ways in which the intricacies of race relations can be revealed and concealed by family memory, identity and myth-making. The story of the author, as the great granddaughter, great-niece and cousin of some of those who poured resources into the film, both disrupts and elaborates previously ingrained versions of her family history. 11. Free Download Maureen E. Montgomery, "Displaying Women: Spectacles of Leisure in Edith Wharton's New York" English | 1998 | ISBN: 0415905664 | EPUB | pages: 226 | 2.6 mb Displaying Women explores the role of women in the representation of leisure in turn-of-the-century New York. To see and be seen-on Fifth Avenue and Broadway, in Central Park, and in the fashionable uptown hotels and restaurants-was one of the fundamental principles in the display aesthetic of New York's fashionable society. Maureen E. Montgomery argues for a reconsideration of the role of women in the bourgeois elite in turn-of-the-century America. By contrasting multiple images of women drawn from newspapers, magazines, private correspondence, etiquette manuals and the New York fiction of Edith Wharton, Henry James and others, she offers a convincing antidote to the long-standing tendency in women's history to overlook women whose class affiliations have put them in a position of power. 12. Free Download Displaced: Civilians in the Russia-Ukraine War by Valery Panyushkin, Brian James Baer, Ellen Vayner English | August 20, 2024 | ISBN: 8889660597 | 251 pages | EPUB | 1.21 Mb A Russian journalist's first-hand account of the heartbreak and resilience of ordinary Ukrainians faced with Putin's aggression. Unique among books about Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Displaced tells the stories of ordinary and extraordinary civilians whose lives have been upended in the conflict. Russian dissident and journalist Valery Panyushkin gives readers an immersive and humanizing account of what it means to wake up one day and find yourself a refugee, or to feel compelled to devote your life to helping refugees. Panyushkin's achievement in this singular book is the proximity he creates between his readers and his subjects. All the small annoyances, the major catastrophes, the special occasions, quiet rewards, challenges, joys, and triumphs that constitute a life-how do these play out when you have been forced to leave your home with only a few possessions and no guarantee you'll ever be back? What does it mean to be HIV positive, to have a toothache that needs attention, to be midway through gender reassignment therapy, to be pregnant, seeking an abortion, out of work, close to retirement, suffering from addiction, caring for a neighbor's pets, when you are a refugee? How do you keep up the insurance payments, celebrate birthdays and anniversaries, conclude a business deal, stay healthy, find a purpose? Above all, Panyushkin asks, how long will it be before all of us-even those who today feel most shielded from such a fate-know the answers to these questions from direct experience of forced displacement? In the tradition of Ryszard Kapuściński and Nobel Prize winner Svetlana Alexievich, Panyushkin brings us directly into the daily lives of people who have been forcibly displaced by war. 15. Free Download Frederika Elizabeth Bain, "Dismemberment in the Medieval and Early Modern English Imaginary: The Performance of Difference" English | 2020 | ISBN: 1501517864 | EPUB | pages: 313 | 0.8 mb The medieval and early modern English imaginary encompasses a broad range of negative and positive dismemberments, from the castration anxieties of Turk plays to the elite practices of distributive burial. This study argues that representations and instances of bodily fragmentation illustrated and performed acts of exclusion and inclusion, detaching not only limbs from bodies but individuals from identity groups. Within this context it examines questions of legitimate and illegitimate violence, showing that such distinctions largely rested upon particular acts' assumed symbolic meanings. Specific chapters address ways dismemberments manifested gender, human versus animal nature, religious and ethnic identity, and social rank. The book concludes by examining the afterlives of body parts, including relics and specimens exhibited for entertainment and education, contextualized by discussion of the resurrection body and its promise of bodily reintegration. Grounded in dramatic works, the study also incorporates a variety of genres from midwifery manuals to broadside ballads. 16. Free Download Georgia Lee Tatum, "Disloyalty in the Confederacy" English | 2016 | ISBN: 1258166615 | EPUB | pages: 188 | 0.7 mb Until recently, many historians, as well as people in general, have commonly accepted the idea that every man, woman, and child in the South stood loyally behind Jefferson Davis and the Stars and Bars in support of the Confederacy. Despite the fact that out of a population of about eight million whites, six hundred thousand offered their services to the Confederacy in 1861, and also the fact that the staunch, unswerving loyalty of Southerners during the war will continue to rouse admiration, there was, in 1861, a small number, which by 1865 had increased to a potent minority, that did nothing to aid the Confederacy and much to injure it. While many showed their disaffection only by refusing to fight, many others organized not only for self-protection but also for the destruction of the Confederacy. Before the end of the war, there was much disaffection in every state, and many of the disloyal had formed into bands-in some states into well organized, active societies, with signs, oaths, grips, and passwords. In the present study, an attempt has been made to discover the causes for this movement, the classes that parti[beeep]ted in it, and the purpose and work of the organizations. Many consider the effects of this shift inevitable. In Disintegrating Democracy at Work, Virginia Doellgast contends that high pay and good working conditions are possible even for marginal service jobs. This outcome, however, depends on strong unions and encompassing collective bargaining institutions, which are necessary to give workers a voice in the decisions that affect the design of their jobs and the distribution of productivity gains. Doellgast's conclusions are based on a comparative study of the changes that occurred in the organization of call center jobs in the United States and Germany following the liberalization of telecommunications markets. Based on survey data and interviews with workers, managers, and union representatives, she found that German managers more often took the "high road" than those in the United States, investing in skills and giving employees more control over their work. Doellgast traces the difference to stronger institutional supports for workplace democracy in Germany. However, these democratic structures were increasingly precarious, as managers in both countries used outsourcing strategies to move jobs to workplaces with lower pay and weaker or no union representation. Doellgast's comparative findings show the importance of policy choices in closing off these escape routes, promoting broad access to good jobs in expanding service industries. 18. Free Download Dale T. Graden, "Disease, Resistance, and Lies: The Demise of the Transatlantic Slave Trade to Brazil and Cuba" English | 2014 | ISBN: 0807155292 | EPUB | pages: 304 | 1.5 mb In the early nineteenth century the major economic players of the Atlantic trade lanes - the United States, Brazil, and Cuba - witnessed explosive commercial growth. Commodities like cotton, coffee, and sugar contributed to the fantastic wealth of an elite few and the enslavement of many. As a result of an increased population and concurrent economic expansion, the United States widened its trade relationship with Cuba and Brazil, importing half of Brazil's coffee exports and 82 percent of Cuba's total exports by 1877. Disease, Resistance, and Lies examines the impact of these burgeoning markets on the Atlantic slave trade between these countries from 1808 - when the U.S. government outlawed American involvement in the slave trade to Cuba and Brazil - to 1867, when slave traffic to Cuba ceased. In his comparative study, Dale Graden engages several important historiographic debates, including the extent to which U.S. merchants and capital facilitated the slave trade to Brazil and Cuba, the role of infectious disease in ending the trade to those countries, and the effect of slave revolts in helping to bring the transatlantic slave trade to an end. Graden situates the transatlantic slave trade within the expanding and rapidly changing international economy of the first half of the nineteenth century, offering a fresh analysis of the "Southern Triangle Trade" that linked Cuba, Brazil, and Africa. Disease, Resistance, and Lies challenges more conservative interpretations of the waning decades of the transatlantic slave trade by arguing that the threats of infectious disease and slave resistance both influenced policymakers to suppress slave traffic to Brazil and Cuba and also made American merchants increasingly unwilling to risk their capital in the transport of slaves. 19. Free Download Discrete Diversity and Dispersion Maximization: A Tutorial on Metaheuristic Optimization by Rafael Martiacute English | November 17, 2023 | ISBN: 3031383095 | 365 pages | MOBI | 22 Mb This book demonstrates the metaheuristic methodologies that apply to maximum diversity problems to solve them. Maximum diversity problems arise in many practical settings from facility location to social network analysis and constitute an important class of NP-hard problems in combinatorial optimization. In fact, this volume presents a "missing link" in the combinatorial optimization-related literature. In providing the basic principles and fundamental ideas of the most successful methodologies for discrete optimization, this book allows readers to create their own applications for other discrete optimization problems. Additionally, the book is designed to be useful and accessible to researchers and practitioners in management science, industrial engineering, economics, and computer science, while also extending value to non-experts in combinatorial optimization. Owed to the tutorials presented in each chapter, this book may be used in a master course, a doctoral seminar, or as supplementary to a primary text in upper undergraduate courses. The chapters are divided into three main sections. The first section describes a metaheuristic methodology in a tutorial style, offering generic descriptions that, when applied, create an implementation of the methodology for any optimization problem. The second section presents the customization of the methodology to a given diversity problem, showing how to go from theory to application in creating a heuristic. The final part of the chapters is devoted to experimentation, describing the results obtained with the heuristic when solving the diversity problem. Experiments in the book target the so-called MDPLIB set of instances as a benchmark to evaluate the performance of the methods. 24. Free Download Alun Munslow, "Discourse and Culture: The Creation of America, 1870-1920" English | 2009 | ISBN: 0415553032, 1138176184 | EPUB | pages: 236 | 0.3 mb Written history is literary artifact: taking this as its starting point, Discourse and Culture argues that the Foucauldian concept of the shifting scale of linguistic and historic values must be the central focus for a new interpretation of American culture and ideology. Six major American historical figures are evaluated as products of the conflict between subordinate and dominant influences in American society: steelmaster Andrew Carnegie; labour leader Terence V. Powderly; historian of the West Frederick J. Turner; social reconstructionist Jane Addams; race leader Booker T. Washington; and black nationalist W.E.B. du Bois. Discourse and Culture re-assesses the relationship between ideology and cultural formation by asking if cultural change can be explained as a function of discourse. The book draws upon the ideas of Althusser, Gramsci and Hayden to address this issue, which lies at the very heart of contemporary debate on the character of cultural history. Liliana Doganova's book sheds new light on this anxious query. It argues that our relationship to the future has been trapped in the gears of a device called discounting. While its incidence remains little known, discounting has long been entrenched in market and policy practices, shaping the ways firms and governments look to the future and make decisions accordingly. Thus, a sociological account of discounting formulas has become urgent. Discounting means valuing things through the flows of costs and benefits that they are likely to generate in the future, with these future flows being literally Read more Rapidgator https://rg.to/file/2d0180d1a7116ab8007e2c0fb36109de/6ybgt.rar.html TakeFile https://takefile.link/wr53lcdjb0zz/6ybgt.rar.html Links are Interchangeable - Single Extraction
