Brady, "Eisenhower and Adenauer: Alliance Maintenance under Pressure, 1953-1960" English | 2009 | pages: 291 | ISBN: 0739142259 | PDF | 2,2 mb In the early years of the Atlantic Alliance, no bilateral relationship was more important than that between the Federal Republic of Germany and the United States. Even so, the West German-American alliance was taxing for both sides during much of the first two decades of the Cold War. Ultimately, despite frequent, significant challenges to the alliance from without and within, the two allies managed to achieve a positive and productive relationship - Eisenhower and Adenauer explains how they did so. In both capitals, the top foreign policy makers were deeply involved in the conduct of what they viewed as a vital bilateral alliance, with both President Dwight Eisenhower and Chancellor Konrad Adenauer taking the lead in his own government. For the Americans, a rearmed FRG tightly bound to the West was the bedrock of any European security policy that could contain the Soviet Union for the long-term. For the West German government, their relationship with the United States was the bedrock of rehabilitation and, indeed, survival as an independent country. In this book, their alliance is closely analyzed to form new knowledge on the West German-American relationship during the Cold War. 5. Free Download Effective Interventions in the Lives of Criminal Offenders By Byron R. Johnson Ph.D. (auth.), John A. Humphrey, Peter Cordella (eds.) 2014 | 149 Pages | ISBN: 1461489296 | PDF | 2 MB This book provides the most current thinking on effective interventions in the lives of criminal offenders. Original articles by leading criminologists provide in-depth analyses of "turning points" in the desistance process experienced by criminal offenders. An understanding of the sources of turning points (or interventions) across the life course is vital to assessing their impact on criminal behavior. Three sources of interventions in criminal careers are identified in the literature: structural location, human agency and situated choice. Structural location refers to the social place occupied by an individual in the social structure: including marital and occupational status, education and income, and so on. Human agency means the active will of an individual to change his or her behavior, that is, the decision to stop engaging in criminal activities. In addition, situated choice coordinates the offender's willingness to end a life of crime with the social structural supports that increase the odds of criminal desistance. This comprehensive book considers all three sources of turning points-structural location, human agency, and situated choice-across the life course of criminal offenders. The book also provides a section on cross-cultural perspectives on the effectiveness of interventions in the careers of criminal offenders. The policy implications of each intervention are considered in individual chapters. In addition, the authors suggest a research agenda to further the understanding of the interplay among the key interventions across the life course. This book will be of interest to researchers studying criminology from a life course perspective, as well as crime prevention, and public policy. 6. Free Download Effective Group Work in Primary School Classrooms: The SPRinG Approach By Peter Kutnick, Peter Blatchford (auth.) 2014 | 212 Pages | ISBN: 9400769903 | PDF | 2 MB This book offers a challenge to traditional approaches to classroom teaching and pedagogy. The SPRinG (Social Pedagogic Research into Groupwork) project, part of a larger research programme on teaching and learning funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), was developed to enhance the learning potential of pupils working in classroom groups by actively involving teachers in a programme designed to raise levels of group work during typical classroom learning activities. Internationally, the SPRinG project is the largest evaluation of effective group working methods in comparison to traditional teaching, with findings that show raised levels of pupil achievement and a doubling of sustained, active engagement in learning. The opening chapters present arguments regarding the relationship of social interaction and children's cognitive development and examine theories that explain why social interactional processes should be integrated into primary school pedagogic practices. Next, the book describes the conceptual and methodological basis for the SPRinG studies, especially its focus on the relational approach, the type of involvement of teachers and classroom planning. Further chapters present key results and describe the background and methods used to establish SPRinG-based effects on pupil progress in mathematics, literacy and science, including both macro and micro assessments; how the SPRinG approach affected pupil-pupil interactions and teacher-pupil interactions, as measured by systematic on-the-spot observations and analyses of videotapes of groups working on specially designed tasks work; and effects on pupil self-completed measures of motivation and attitudes to group work. The book also analyses reflections of teachers who have worked with SPRinG: moving from theory to practice as well as adding insights associated with implementing SPRinG principles in schools. Drawing upon developmental psychological, social psychological and classroom research, it develops a new and ambitious social pedagogic approach to classroom learning, with a stress on group work, which will be of interest to researchers, teachers and policy-makers.This book includes contributions from Andrew Tolmie and Ed Baines, who were also involved in the ScotSPRinG and SPRinG projects. 8. Free Download Maria Bruquetas Callejo, "Educational Reception in Rotterdam and Barcelona: Policies, Practices and Gaps " English | ISBN: 9089646442 | 2014 | 324 pages | PDF | 2 MB The reception of newcomer youngsters by schools constitutes a policy issue in Europe already for decades. This book deals with how practitioners in Rotterdam and Barcelona apply existing policies for the reception of immigrant students, the dilemmas they face and the strategies they design as a response. Using a combination of discursive, organizational, and ethnographic research techniques, the author studies to what extent practices conform to policies, and to what extent they diverge from them in basic principles. This book analyzes the influence of institutional frameworks on the practices of policy implementers by comparing Netherlands and Spain -specifically Barcelona and Rotterdam-, two cases which are very different in terms of their national policies of integration, their educational systems and their programs for educational reception. Much can be learned over the reception practices of secondary schools, but above all over how policy gaps work, and the common and specific features that they present across different countries. In short, this is an indispensable reading for scholars, policymakers and practitioners alike, which offers new insights about the policy-practice gap and the role of policy practitioners in it. 10. Free Download Educational Delusions?: Why Choice Can Deepen Inequality and How to Make Schools Fair By Gary Orfield, Erica Frankenberg 2013 | 330 Pages | ISBN: 0520274733 | PDF | 5 MB The first major battle over school choice came out of struggles over equalizing and integrating schools in the civil rights era, when it became apparent that choice could be either a serious barrier or a significant tool for reaching these goals. The second large and continuing movement for choice was part of the very different anti-government, individualistic, market-based movement of a more conservative period in which many of the lessons of that earlier period were forgotten, though choice was once again presented as the answer to racial inequality. This book brings civil rights back into the center of the debate and tries to move from doctrine to empirical research in exploring the many forms of choice and their very different consequences for equity in U.S. schools. Leading researchers conclude that although helping minority children remains a central justification for choice proponents, ignoring the essential civil rights dimensions of choice plans risks compounding rather than remedying racial inequality. Eadie 2011 | 90 Pages | ISBN: 3642168132 | PDF | 4 MB This book deals with the role of education in improving animal welfare and reducing animal suffering inflicted by humans. It embraces situations in which humans have direct control over animals or interfere directly with them, but it considers also indirect animal suffering resulting from human activities. Education is regarded in the broad sense of creating awareness and facilitating change. First, consideration is given to a number of specific themes in which education can make an important contribution towards reducing animal suffering, and subsequently an examination is made of a number of interrelated contexts in which education can address the various themes. 15. Free Download Tony Armstrong Ph.D, "Educating Angels: Teaching for the Pursuit of Happiness (Volume 9) " English | ISBN: 1624910130 | 2013 | 288 pages | EPUB | 565 KB What sort of education would be worthy of angels? Tony Armstrong argues it would be an education focused on helping them achieve their deepest aspiration: happiness. Contemporary education ignores the question of children's happiness. Schools aren't in the happiness business. For the most part, they're in the preparing-workers business. Children are treated more as means to economic ends than as ends in themselves in today's schools. Armstrong doesn't think this moral lapse is due to not caring enough about our children. He says it has more to do with people being unaware that schools could do far more than they do to improve kids' chances for realizing happiness. If parents understood schools could do more for the happiness of their children, he believes they would insist on it. Armstrong offers a practical understanding of happiness as a feeling you want to keep feeling and sees the pursuit of happiness as the steps you take to feel better than you do at present. Seen in this light, empowering students' lifelong pursuit of happiness involves helping them gain the insights and skills that allow them to feel as they choose from moment to moment as well as in the long-term. He points to classroom-tested methods that have proven quite effective in helping kids feel better. And also behave better, learn better, relate better, and treat others more kindly. Dr. Armstrong presents a kindergarten-through-college pedagogy that would result in happier people and better societies. He paints an inspiring picture of an education worthy of angels and a future worthy of humanity. 16. Free Download Edith Cavell By Souhami, Diana Souhami 2010 | 404 Pages | ISBN: 1849163596 | EPUB | 7 MB Edith Cavell was born on 4th December 1865, daughter of the vicar of Swardeston in Norfolk, and shot in Brussels on 12th October 1915 by the Germans for sheltering British and French soldiers and helping them escape over the Belgian border. Following a traditional village childhood in 19th century England, Edith worked as a governess in the UK and abroad, before training as a nurse in London in 1895. To Edith, nursing was a duty, a vocation, but above all a service. By 1907, she had travelled most of Europe and become matron of her own hospital in Belgium, where, under her leadership, a ramshackle hospital with few staff and little organization became a model nursing school. When war broke out, Edith helped soldiers to escape the war by giving them jobs in her hospital, finding clothing and organizing safe passage into Holland. In all, she assisted over two hundred men. When her secret work was discovered, Edith was put on trial and sentenced to death by firing squad. She uttered only 130 words in her defence. A devout Christian, the evening before her death, she asked to be remembered as a nurse, not a hero or a martyr, and prayed to be fit for heaven. When news of Edith's death reached Britain, army recruitment doubled. After the war, Edith's body was returned to the UK by train and every station through which the coffin passed was crowded with mourners. Diana Souhami brings one of the Great War's finest heroes to life in this biography of a hardworking, courageous and independent woman. Free Download Economics and World History: Myths and Paradoxes By Paul Bairoch 1995 | 200 Pages | ISBN: 0226034631 | PDF | 5 MB Paul Bairoch sets the record straight on twenty commonly held myths about economic history. Among these are that free trade and population growth have historically led to periods of economic growth; that a move away from free trade caused the Great Depression; and that colonial powers in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries became rich through the exploitation of the Third World. Bairoch argues that these beliefs are based on insufficient knowledge and misguided interpretations of the economic history of the United States, Europe, and the Third World."A challenging and readable introduction to some major controversial themes in modern international economic history."-Peter J. Free Download Economics Ethics and Religion: Jewish, Christian and Muslim Economic Thought By Rodney Wilson 1997 | 244 Pages | ISBN: 0333626427 | PDF | 15 MB There is a revival of interest by economists in ethical issues and beliefs, and by moral philosophers and theologians in economics. This book is intended to make a contribution to this cross-fertilisation of ideas. Rodney Wilson has undertaken an extensive survey of Jewish, Christian and Muslim views on economics, and reviewed the rapidly expanding business ethics literature from a religious perspective. The juxtaposition of the work of theologians and moral philosophers with that of economists results in some interesting comparisons. 21. Free Download Economic Adjustments in New Democracies: Lessons from Southern Europe By Diane Ethier 1997 | 180 Pages | ISBN: 0333695569 | PDF | 10 MB Many recent books deal with the politics of economic adjustment in new democracies. However, none of them provides a thorough comparative analysis of Southern European cases. This book fills this lacuna. The first part compares the orientations and the outcomes of the economic policies carried out by the Greek, Spanish and Portuguese governments during the post-authoritarian period (1975-95). It reveals that economic adjustment has been achieved with a mitigated success in Spain and Portugal while it failed in Greece. The second part analyses the causes of these unequal performances. It shows that the latter have been decisively influenced by two factors: the government's commitment to undertaking reforms: the autonomy of the executive toward the main political actors or its capacity to rally their support. On the whole, this work challenges various preconceived ideas about Southern Europe while confirming and complementing the main findings of similar studies devoted to Eastern European, Latin American, Asian and African new democracies. 22. Free Download Ecological Psychology in Context: James Gibson, Roger Barker, and the Legacy of William James's Radical Empiricism By Harry Heft 2001 | 476 Pages | ISBN: 0805823506 | EPUB | 4 MB In this book Harry Heft examines the historical and theoretical foundations of James J. Gibson's ecological psychology in 20th century thought, and in turn, integrates ecological psychology and analyses of sociocultural processes. A thesis of the book is that knowing is rooted in the direct experience of meaningful environmental objects and events present in individual-environment processes and at the level of collective, social settings. Ecological Psychology in Context: *traces the primary lineage of Gibson's ecological approach to William James's philosophy of radical empiricism; *illuminates how the work of James's student and Gibson's mentor, E.B. Holt, served as a catalyst for the development of Gibson's framework and as a bridge to James's work; *reveals how ecological psychology reciprocally can advance Jamesian studies by resolving some of the theoretical difficulties that kept James from fully realizing a realist philosophy; *broadens the scope of Gibson's framework by proposing a synthesis between it and the ecological program of Roger Barker, who discovered complex systems operating at the level of collective, social processes; *demonstrates ways in which the psychological domain can be extended to properties of the environment rendering its features meaningful, publicly accessible, and distributed across person-environment processes; and *shows how Gibson's work points the way toward overcoming the gap between experimental psychology and the humanities. Intended for scholars and students in the areas of ecological and environmental psychology, theoretical and historical psychology, cognitive science, developmental psychology, anthropology, and philosophy.
