Together they unleashed a range of improvised forms from peaceful movement explorations to wildly imaginative collective fantasies. This book delves into the "collective genius" of Grand Union and explores their process of deep play. Drawing on hours of archival videotapes, Wendy Perron seeks to understand the ebb and flow of the performances. Includes 65 photographs. 2. Free Download The Gouge!: How to Be Smarter Than the Situation You Are In by Robert Harward English | June 25th, 2024 | ISBN: 9798888453124 | 256 pages | True EPUB | 4.81 MB You are measured by what you do for others, not by what you have accomplished for yourself. The Gouge, in military parlance, is what you really need to know in order to be smarter than the situation you are in. As a US Navy SEAL, who became a Vice Admiral, Bob Harward lived by the Gouge and used it as a guiding principle for leadership and day-to-day life. More specifically, his success in his military and corporate careers was predicated on the people who worked with him, and for him. Their ability to meet their personal and professional objectives, ensured his success. The Gouge was a persistent and proactive focus on their success, to ensure they, and he, could succeed in all of their endeavors. Now, he is sharing it with the world. In this book, he uses life stories to illustrate how anyone can use the Gouge, not only for their own well-being but also for any organization or community. At its foundation, it is your personal contract with people and humanity. In this book, Harward boils all of this down into the Gouge philosophy and its key ingredients: on how to move yourself and the people around you forward, using the best information and experienced based knowledge, so that you too can live by the Gouge. 6. Free Download The Good Eater: A Vegan's Search for the Future of Food by Nina Guilbeault English | April 26th, 2024 | ISBN: 1635576997 | 256 pages | True EPUB | 2.83 MB An enlightening and delicious look at how vegans - and their critics - are redefining the way the world eats in the twenty-first century. For years, there has been no doubt that widespread consumption of meat is both environmentally destructive and morally dubious. A growing chorus of scientists, health experts, and activists champion the benefits of a plant-based diet. Nevertheless, change has been slow to arrive, and the chasm between our appetites and our collective well-being seems impossibly vast. We know we must transition to a more plant-based world. But what would such a world look like, and how do we realistically get there? One group of people has been grappling with this question for decades: vegans. Once mocked for its hempy puritanism, the vegan movement has grown from a fringe identity into a veritable cultural juggernaut. Yet visions of what our food system should look like continue to conflict. Is the healthful vegan lifestyle appealing-or alienating? Are high-tech meat alternatives merely a repeat performance of harmful fast-food values? Is modern veganism itself misguided-a wrong answer to the right questions? In The Good Eater, Harvard-trained sociologist (and vegan) Nina Guilbeault, PhD vividly explores the movement's history and its present-day tensions by grappling with the most fundamental question of all: Is there a truly ethical way to eat? What emerges is a fascinating portrait of how social change happens, with profound implications for our plates-and our planet. 7. Free Download The Good Chicken Cookbook: Over 100 Delicious and Sustainable Recipes by Marcus Bean English | July 9th, 2024 | ISBN: 1848994249 | 244 pages | True EPUB | 107.77 MB This is the go-to cookbook for sustainable chicken recipes, with advice on using the whole bird, preparation techniques and tips on chicken care. Chicken is a superb meat. Tender and full of flavour, it is fantastically versatile, as well as a cheaper and healthier alternative to pork, beef and lamb. However, because of its budget-friendly price tag, it has also become associated with the worst in modern farming: poor conditions, chickens being injected with salt-water and antibiotics, and meat contaminated with salmonella. But it doesn't have to be like this. This cookbook reclaims chicken, showing how it can be incorporated into good, sustainable cooking. Marcus Bean, a farm-based TV chef and presenter, has made it his mission to take a fresh look at the chicken, from coop to kitchen. Marcus gives you innovative and inspiring dishes that will also help you to reduce your impact on the planet, from lemongrass and thyme Scotch eggs to chicken tostada. Written with passion and verve' Spectator 'A more masterful and accessible survey ... would be hard to find ... Enthralling' Literary Review India is the forgotten heart of the ancient world For a millennium and a half, India was a confident exporter of its diverse civilisation, creating around it a vast empire of ideas. Indian art, religions, technology, astronomy, music, dance, literature, mathematics and mythology blazed a trail across the world, along a Golden Road that stretched from the Red Sea to the Pacific. William Dalrymple draws from a lifetime of scholarship to highlight India's oft-forgotten position as the heart of ancient Eurasia. For the first time, he gives a name to this spread of Indian ideas that transformed the world. From the largest Hindu temple in the world at Angkor Wat to the Buddhism of China, from the trade that helped fund the Roman Empire to the creation of the numerals we use today (including zero), India transformed the culture and technology of its ancient world - and our world today as we know it. 10. Free Download The Golden Gang: Bushranger Frank Gardiner and the biggest gold robbery in Australian history by Ian W. Shaw English | August 14th, 2024 | ISBN: 1761424726 | 288 pages | True EPUB | 2.61 MB The first comprehensive biography of the godfather of Australian bushranging - Frank Gardiner - leader of the Lachlan gang and mastermind of the largest gold heist in Australian history. Atop the hierarchy of Australian bushrangers sits Ned Kelly - the ultimate outlaw - and just below him, the tragic figure of Ben Hall, who joined a gang led by a man whose name today is less well known, but in his time was much more famous than any other: Frank Gardiner. Mastermind of the largest gold robbery in Australia's history, Gardiner led an extraordinary life, the full telling of which is long overdue. In a tough country and among a group of tough men, Gardiner was the toughest of them all. But while he engaged in gunfights with police to evade capture, he was always courteous and could lay claim to never killing anyone, and never stole from those who couldn't afford to be robbed. He went by three different surnames in his lifetime and spent almost half of it behind bars, including at some of the colonies' most notorious penal institutions: the Pentridge Stockade, Cockatoo Island and Darlinghurst Gaol. But if Gardiner was never quite the Robin Hood he sometimes imagined himself to be, he was nevertheless a natural leader, and a man capable of inspiring a motley bunch of stockmen and drifters to become the most effective and successful bushranging gang in the country's history. His Lachlan gang operated with a clockwork efficiency that culminated in the robbery of the Gold Escort at Eugowra Rocks, and from 1861 to 1863 it held reign over the roads of the Western Plains of New South Wales. Richly detailed, The Golden Gang shines a new light onto Gardiner's remarkable life - one that ended in shocking tragedy - and reinstates him in the pantheon of Australian outlaw heroes. 13. Free Download D. A. Carson, "The God Who Makes Himself Known: The Missionary Heart of the Book of Exodus" English | 2012 | ISBN: 0830826297 | PDF | pages: 243 | 1.5 mb The Lord's commitment to make himself known throughout the nations is the overarching missionary theme of the Bible and the central theological concern of Exodus.Countering scholarly tendencies to fragment the text over theological difficulties, Ross Blackburn contends that Exodus should be read as a unified whole, and that an appreciation of its missionary theme in its canonical context is of great help in dealing with the difficulties that the book poses. For example, how is Exodus 6:3 best understood? Is there a tension between law and gospel, or mercy and judgment? How should we understand the painstaking detail of the tabernacle chapters? From a careful examination of Exodus, this New Studies in Biblical Theology volume demonstrates that - the Lord humbled Pharaoh so the world would know that only God can save - the Lord gave Israel the law so that its people might display his goodness to the nations, living in a state of order and blessing - the Lord dealt with Israel's idolatry severely, yet mercifully, for his goodness cannot be known if his glory is compromised In the end, Exodus not only sheds important light on the church's mission, but also reveals what kind of God the Lord is, one who pursues his glory and our good, ultimately realizing both as he makes himself known in Christ Jesus.Addressing key issues in biblical theology, the works comprising New Studies in Biblical Theology are creative attempts to help Christians better understand their Bibles. The NSBT series is edited by D. A. Carson, aiming to simultaneously instruct and to edify, to interact with current scholarship and to point the way ahead. 18. Free Download Wannaporn Rienjang, "The Global Connections of Gandhāran Art: Proceedings of the Third International Workshop of the Gandhāra Connections Pro" English | ISBN: 178969695X | 2020 | 276 pages | PDF | 34 MB Gandhāran art is often regarded as the epitome of cultural exchange in antiquity. The ancient region of Gandhāra, centred on what is now the northern tip of Pakistan, has been called the 'crossroads of Asia'. The Buddhist art produced in and around this area in the first few centuries AD exhibits extraordinary connections with other traditions across Asia and as far as the Mediterranean. Since the nineteenth century, the Graeco-Roman associations of Gandhāran art have attracted particular attention. Classically educated soldiers and administrators of that era were astonished by the uncanny resemblance of many works of Gandhāran sculpture to Greek and Roman art made thousands of miles to the west. More than a century later we can recognize that the Gandhāran artists' appropriation of classical iconography and styles was diverse and extensive, but the explanation of this 'influence' remains puzzling and elusive. The Gandhāra Connections project at the University of Oxford's Classical Art Research Centre was initiated prin[beeep]lly to cast new light on this old problem. This volume is the third set of proceedings of the project's annual workshop, and the first to address directly the question of cross-cultural influence on and by Gandhāran art. The contributors wrestle with old controversies, particularly the notion that Gandhāran art is a legacy of Hellenistic Greek rule in Central Asia and the growing consensus around the important role of the Roman Empire in shaping it. But they also seek to present a more complex and expansive view of the networks in which Gandhāra was embedded. Adopting a global perspective on the subject, they examine aspects of Gandhāra's connections both within and beyond South Asia and Central Asia, including the profound influence which Gandhāran art itself had on the development of Buddhist art in China and India. 20. Free Download The Girl with the Golden Eyes (The Art of the Novella) by Honoré de Balzac, translated by Charlotte Mandell English | September 1, 2006 | ISBN: 0976658313 | True EPUB | 128 pages | 1.8 MB When the night came, he went to the meeting-place, and quietly let himself be blindfolded. Raw as Honoré de Balzac is famed to be, this daring novella-never before published as a stand-alone book-is perhaps the most outlandish thing he ever wrote. While still concerned with the depiction of the underside of Parisian life, as is most of Balzac's oeuvre, The Girl with the Golden Eyes considers not the working lives of the poor, but the sex lives of the upper crust. In a nearly boroque rendering with erotically charged details as well as lush and extravagant language, The Girl with the Golden Eyes tells the story of a rich and ruthless young man in nineteenth century Paris caught up in an amorous entanglement with a mysterious beauty. His control slipping, incest, homosexuality, sexual slavery, and violence combine in what was then, and still remains, a shocking and taboo-breaking work. 23. Free Download The Ghost Lake by Wendy Pratt English | 15 Aug. 2024 | ISBN: 0008637377, 0008637415 | True EPUB | 272 pages | 2.8 MB The Ghost Lake is a deeply personal, lyrical and stirring meditation on local history and changing landscapes that intertwines nature writing with an exploration of grief, belonging and the lives and legacies of rural working‐class people. I am setting out on a pilgrimage through an ancient landscape. I will begin at my daughter's grave. Paleolake Flixton is an extinct lake in North Yorkshire. Human occupation of the site dates back thousands of years to prehistoric times. Over the millennia, the vast lake disappeared, turning to wetland and peaty fields. Today all that is left of it is a watermark. Wendy Pratt brings the reader on a pilgrimage around the ghost lake, to locations that have acted as journey markers in her own life. While traversing forests and fenland, she reflects on the process of finding belonging in nature as a woman who exists in a series of liminal spaces - as a working-class writer, an infertile woman in a fertile world and a bereaved mother in a society focused on children. 24. Free Download The Gestation of German Biology: Philosophy and Physiology from Stahl to Schelling by John H. Zammito English | December 18, 2017 | ISBN: 022652079X | True EPUB | pages | 0.8 MB The emergence of biology as a distinct science in the eighteenth century has long been a subject of scholarly controversy. Michel Foucault, on the one hand, argued that its appearance only after 1800 represented a fundamental rupture with the natural history that preceded it, marking the beginnings of modernity. Ernst Mayr, on the other hand, insisted that even the word "biology" was unclear in its meaning as late as 1800, and that the field itself was essentially prospective well into the 1800s. In The Gestation of German Biology, historian of ideas John Zammito presents a different version of the emergence of the field, one that takes on both Foucault and Mayr and emphasizes the scientific progress throughout the eighteenth century that led to the recognition of the need for a special science. The embrace of the term biology around 1800, Zammito shows, was the culmination of a convergence between natural history and human physiology that led to the development of comparative physiology and morphology-the foundations of biology. Magisterial in scope, Zammito's book offers nothing less than a revisionist history of the field, with which anyone interested in the origins of biology will have to contend. 25. Free Download Ethan Mannon, "The Georgic Mode in Twentieth-Century American Literature: The Satisfactions of Soil and Sweat" English | ISBN: 1666944068 | 2024 | 248 pages | PDF | 2 MB The Georgic Mode in Twentieth-Century American Literature: The Satisfactions of Soil and Sweat explores environmental writing that foregrounds labor. Ethan Mannon argues that Virgil's Georgics, as well as the georgic mode in general, exerted considerable influence upon some of America's best-known writers-including Robert Frost, Willa Cather, and Wendell Berry-and that these and others worked to revise the mode to better fit their own contexts. This book also outlines the contemporary value of the georgic literary tradition-two thousand years of writing that begins with the premise that humans must use the world in order to survive and search for a balance between human needs and nature's productive capacity. In the georgic mode, authors found an adaptable discourse that enabled them to advocate for the protection and responsible use of productive lands, present rural places and people in all of their complexity, explore human relationships with laboring animals, and advertise the sensory pleasures of rooted work.
