Friday interviewed hundreds of women from every part of the country to learn their sexual private thoughts, and she listened like no one else. Free Download My Father Milorad, a Life in Letters: A Physician's Odyssey in Serbia and Russia (Audiobook) English | ASIN: B0D8MB1PWQ | 2024 | 6 hours and 32 minutes | M4B@128 kbps | 362 MB Author: Miloš Milorad Velimirović Narrator: Stefan Rudnicki A biography capturing the adult life of Dr. Milorad Velimirović, a Serb who studied and lived in Czarist Russia in the decades just before WWI and the Russian Revolution. His life is revealed through letters home which contain descriptions of concerts and plays, politics of the day and his attendance at social events; all of this is in addition to the expected personal and familial concerns of an eldest son for his parents and younger brothers and sisters. These writings from one present at the moment provide a fresh look at events that are now distant history. The letters are introduced and given context by the remembrances of his son Prof. Miloš Velimirović, who was also the translator. This audiobook also includes a brief genealogical register of the Velimirović family. Born early in the period between WWI and WWII, Miloš Velimirović grew up in a relatively well-to-do family in Belgrade. After university in Yugoslavia, he was fortunate to be sponsored to study at Harvard University, eventually earning a doctorate in musicology. He had a successful career as an academic in the U.S. and wrote this biography in 1996, in the earlier years of his retirement. The first child and only son of Miloš Velimirović and Norma Goodwin, Milo Velimirović inherited the unpublished manuscripts of his father. Early in his own retirement after a career supporting computing technology, and nearly, thirty years after the biography was written, he sought to have it published so that these life stories would be available to descendants, friends of the family, and interested listeners. Free Download Mom Rage: The Everyday Crisis of Modern Motherhood by Minna Dubin, Seal Press English | September 19, 2023 | ISBN: B0BWKD1YYY | 7 hours and 44 minutes | M4B 64 Kbps | 224 Mb A frank feminist examination of the hidden crisis of rage facing American mothers-and how we can fix it Mothers aren't supposed to be angry. Still, Minna Dubin was an angry mom: exhausted by the grueling, thankless work of full-time parenting and feeling her career slip away, she would find herself screaming at her child or exploding at her husband. When Dubin pushed past her shame and talked with other mothers about how she was feeling, she realized that she was far from alone. Mom Rage is Dubin's groundbreaking work of reportage about an unspoken crisis of anger sweeping the country-and the world. She finds that while a specific instance of rage might be triggered by something as simple as a child who won't tie her shoes, the roots of the anger go far deeper, from the unequal burden of childcare shouldered by moms to the flattening of women's identities once they have kids. Drawing on insights from moms across the spectrum of race, sexual orientation, and class, she offers practical tools to help listeners disarm their rage in the moment, while never losing sight of the broader social change we need to stop raging for good. Free Download Modern Germany: The History and Legacy of the German Nation from Unification to Reunification (Audiobook) English | ISBN: 9798882351884 | 2024 | 30 hours and 20 minutes | M4B@64 kbps | 868 MB Author: Charles River Editors Narrator: Bill Caufield The history of Germany and the German-speaking peoples is as complex and multifaceted as any in Europe. It is also one of the most difficult to pinpoint conceptually and historically, since every nation is a construct to some extent. Language is certainly important, and the German language is a unifying factor for any notion of a unified Germany, yet even today, many German-speakers live outside the borders of modern Germany. Shared customs and traditions gave Germans a common sense of identity to some extent, but these were often local in origin. Germans were also split between several versions of Christianity. Nevertheless, ideas of a German nation were present by the 19th century, leading up to the official unification in 1871. Neil MacGregor, a historian of modern Germany, has explained that the two defining events leading to the rise of German nationalism and the movement toward unification were the Thirty Years' War and the Napoleonic Wars. During the Thirty Years' War, more than 200 German states were part of the Holy Roman Empire's loose confederation, and that war was predominantly fought in German states by foreign powers, including France, Sweden, Denmark, Austria, and the Netherlands. MacGregor noted that "horrors were experienced across all Germany, and were never forgotten," to the extent that they were invoked during World War II. The religious basis of the Thirty Years' War saw the split between Catholicism and Protestantism, which was at the heart of the Reformation. Some foreign leaders even invoked defending "German freedoms" for their invasion. From the German point of view, the Thirty Years' War was proof of their vulnerability to foreign aggression. Atrocities such as the "sacking" of Magdeburg in 1631, where more than 30,000 people were killed, were embedded in the German consciousness. All told, 8 million people died during the Thirty Years' War. Free Download Mission Iran: Special Forces Berlin & Operation Eagle Claw, JTF 1-79 (Audiobook) English | ASIN: B0D98HXFKM | 2024 | 4 hours and 38 minutes | M4B@128 kbps | 241 MB Author: James Stejskal Narrator: Jim Seybert On November 4, 1979, "student" supporters of the Ayatollah seized the U.S. Embassy with over sixty hostages. Although the Cold War was in full swing, the Iran hostage crisis was a watershed for the United States. Detachment A had been established in Berlin early in the Cold War to harass and delay any Soviet military advance west. This Special unit trained relentlessly for every aspect of unconventional warfare, and was later assigned a second mission of counterterrorism. The plan for Operation Eagle Claw, as it became known, was extremely complex. The first stage was intelligence gathering-no mean feat as most of the CIA's capabilities in the country had been eliminated. With operatives trained in intelligence work, fluent in many languages, and adept at blending in, Det A took on the advanced recon of the targets. Then, when Delta Force admitted that it could only manage the assault of the Embassy, Det A volunteered to rescue the three Americans at the Foreign Ministry. Veteran and historian James Stejskal details Det A's unique and integral role in Operation Eagle Claw, based upon firsthand accounts of the operatives involved. Free Download Mind in the Making: The Seven Essential Life Skills Every Child Needs by Ellen Galinsky, Marguerite Gavin, HarperAudio English | June 09, 2020 | ISBN: B086VNNXZC | 11 hours and 49 minutes | MP3 128 Kbps | 460 Mb The president of the Families and Work Institute creates an audiobook of groundbreaking advice based on the latest research on child development. Ellen Galinsky has spent her entire career studying early childhood development, first at Vassar College, then for 25 years at the Bank Street College of Education, and for the past 20 years as the founder and now president of the Families and Work Institute. What she has found is that there is an enormous gap between what researchers have discovered and what parents have been told about those discoveries. Mind in the Making bridges this gap, bringing the work of more than 100 scientists into a form that parents everywhere can use. Galinsky has divided this information into the seven skills she believes all children should learn, showing parents not only what children are capable of, but specifically how to develop those capabilities in their children. Free Download Milk: The truth, the lies and the unbelievable story of the original superfood (Audiobook) English | ASIN: B0D7NZNXB1 | 2024 | 7 hours and 47 minutes | MP3@64 kbps | 214 MB Author: Matthew Evans Narrator: Matthew Evans A powerful, entertaining and, at times, eviscerating commentary on the most controversial of original superfoods. Milk. It's in our coffee, on our cereal. We see it in processed form-yoghurt, butter, cheese, skimmed and lactose free. It's there in almond form, or made from oats or soy, and is as lauded as the 'perfect' food or lambasted as not fit for human consumption and a toxic planet killer, depending on who you trust. Which type you drink, whether you were raised on breastmilk, what you think of it, is affected by culture, biology and fashion. How you view it is driven by your gender and your politics, as well as your geography. The miracle liquid has suffered an image problem. It has been used to keep people poor, to keep women subjugated, and to build corporate and medical careers. It's been blamed for climate change, the breakdown of human health, and an enabler of the industrial revolution. From perfect food to pariah, milk's role in life has often been debased. Milk celebrates the majesty of this noble liquid, and delves into the pretenders to its throne, from formula to Mylk. It looks at the transformation of what a milk-producer eats into one of the most nutrient dense foods available, and how that can be transformed again into the butter, cheese and clotted cream that we know and love today. It's an exploration of the science, history and politics of what makes mammals different from every other life form on earth. Free Download Midnight in Moscow: A Memoir from the Front Lines of Russia's War Against the West (Audiobook) English | ASIN: B0CJCQYJT4 | 2024 | 17 hours and 59 minutes | M4B@64 kbps | 518 MB Author: John J. Sullivan, General Jim Mattis Narrator: John J. Sullivan, Matt Godfrey A memoir of service by the American ambassador who was on the diplomatic front lines when Putin invaded Ukraine, Midnight in Moscow is the first behind-the-scenes account of how U.S.-Russia relations hit their nadir-and a playbook for our unfolding confrontation. For weeks before Russia's invasion of Ukraine, John J. Sullivan, the U.S. ambassador in Moscow, was warning that it would happen. When troops finally crossed the border, he was woken in the middle of the night with a prearranged code. The signal was even more bracing than the February cold: it meant that Sullivan needed to collect his bodyguards and get to the embassy as soon as possible. The war had begun, and the world would never be the same. In Midnight in Moscow, Sullivan leads listeners into the offices of the U.S. embassy and the halls of the Kremlin during this climactic period-among the most dangerous since World War II. He shows how the Putin regime repeatedly lied about its intentions to invade Ukraine in the weeks leading up to the attack, while also devoting huge numbers of personnel and vast resources to undermining the U.S. diplomatic mission in Russia. And he explains how, when Putin ultimately gave the order to launch a full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, he proved that Russia was not just at war with its neighbor: it was also at war, in a very real sense, with the United States, and with everything that it represents. But while Putin decided how this conflict started, its ending will be shaped by us. With his unique perspective on a pivotal moment in world history, Sullivan shows how our relationship with Russia has deteriorated, where it's headed, and how far we should be prepared to go in standing up to the menace in Moscow. Free Download Merkel's Law: Wisdom from the Woman Who Led the Free World (Audiobook) English | ASIN: B0CWMF7VJC | 2024 | 5 hours and 52 minutes | M4B@128 kbps | 328 MB Author: Melissa Eddy Narrator: Lisa Flanagan In the vein of Notorious RBG, a fun and inspiring biography filled with lessons from the most powerful woman in the world, based on more than a decade's worth of coverage of German Chancellor Angela Merkel from New York Times Berlin correspondent Melissa Eddy. Angela Merkel is a boss. A trailblazer. An icon of colorful suits. Formerly the new leader of the free world. With an entire hand gesture named after her (the "Merkel Diamond") and celebrated in a viral meme for sparring with Trump, Angela Merkel spent a decade economically and politically revitalizing her country. The first woman chancellor of Germany and one of the longest-serving European leaders ever, Merkel's quiet resolve, calculated confidence, and extreme privacy around her personal life have made her a feminist role model for the ages. Merkel's Law is a revelatory look at an unlikely vanguard, and at the country she led for sixteen years. No one is better positioned than New York Times Berlin correspondent Melissa Eddy to pull back the curtain on the woman who engineered Germany's rise to wealth, power, and an economy worth 3.8 trillion in USD. Drawing upon an unparalleled well of sources close to Merkel, Merkel's Law traces her childhood in East Germany as the daughter of a clergyman, her meteoric rise to power, and her more recent public acclaim-as well as the numerous setbacks she faced along the way both from political rivals and from men in her own party who scoffed at her ambition. Painting a portrait of a political genius, savvy businesswoman, and model for modern power, Merkel's Law is not only the story of her life, but the lessons we can learn from it. Free Download Meet the Neighbors: Animal Minds and Life in a More-than-Human World (Audiobook) English | ASIN: B0D9912394 | 2024 | 11 hours and 36 minutes | M4B@64 kbps | 310 MB Author: Brandon Keim Narrator: Paul Woodson Honeybees deliberate democratically. Rats reflect on the past. Snakes have friends. In recent decades, our understanding of animal cognition has exploded, making it indisputably clear that the cities and landscapes around us are filled with thinking, feeling individuals besides ourselves. But the way we relate to wild animals has yet to catch up. In Meet the Neighbors, science journalist Brandon Keim asks: what would it mean to take the minds of other animals seriously? In this wide-ranging exploration of animals' inner lives, Keim takes us into courtrooms and wildlife hospitals, under backyard decks and into deserts, to meet anew the wild creatures who populate our communities and the philosophers, rogue pest controllers, ecologists, wildlife doctors, and others who are reimagining our relationships to them. When we come to understand the depths of their pleasures and pains, the richness of their family lives and their histories, what do we owe so-called pests and predators, or animals who are sick or injured? Can thinking of nonhumans as our neighbors help chart a course to a kinder, gentler planet? As Keim suggests, the answers to these questions are central to how we understand not only the rest of the living world, but ourselves. Free Download Mathematics from the Visual World English | 2009 | ISBN: 1598035134 | 12 hours 24 minutes | MP3 128 Kbps | 687 Mb Geometry has long been recognized not only as a fascinating skill, but as a gateway to the highest realms of human thought. Mathematics from the Visual World , taught by distinguished Professor Michael Starbird, introduces you to the terms, concepts, and astonishing power of geometry, including topology, conic sections, non-Euclidian geometry, congruence, and much more. In 24 richly illustrated lectures, you discover the important role this profound mathematical field plays in everything from algebra and calculus to cosmology and chemistry to art and architecture. This delightful, invigorating, and enlightening journey will allow you to master one of the most glorious inventions of the human mind. Plato's Academy in Athens was the think tank of the ancient world and bore this motto over its door: "Let no one ignorant of geometry enter here." Ever since, geometry has been recognized as not only a useful and fascinating skill, but also as a gateway to the highest realms of human thought. Seemingly simple geometric ideas such as the Pythagorean theorem turn out to have profound implications in unexpected places, including our modern conception of space and time. Mathematics from the Visual World, taught by veteran Teaching Company Professor Michael Starbird of The University of Texas at Austin, takes Plato's dictum to heart and introduces you to the terms, concepts, and astonishing power of geometry. In 24 richly illustrated lectures, you learn that geometry is everywhere. It is the key to scientific disciplines from cosmology to chemistry. It is central to art and architecture. It provides deep insights into algebra, calculus, and other mathematical fields. And it is stunning to contemplate in its beauty. Consider these intriguing applications of geometry * Conic sections: Euclid and other ancient mathematicians investigated conic sections-the shapes produced by the intersection of a plane and a cone. Two thousand years later, Galileo, Kepler, and Newton discovered that these shapes describe the paths followed by free-falling objects in a gravitational field. * Non-Euclidean geometry: Euclidean geometry is simple and intuitive, and it appears to govern the world around us. But a nagging problem with Euclid's concept of parallel lines led to the discovery of new geometries in the 1800s. These non-Euclidean geometries accurately reflect phenomena in physics and other disciplines. * Topology: Under what conditions can a coffee cup and a doughnut be considered the same? When they are analyzed in topology-the branch of mathematics that deals with shapes that retain their identity after twisting and stretching. Topology captures fundamental geometric properties of objects, giving us a new perspective on reality. Intellect and Eye From the simplicity of the golden rectangle to the infinitely complex realm of fractals, no other area of mathematics is so richly endowed with interesting examples as geometry, which appeals to both the intellect and the eye. All of geometry's many applications make use of the bedrock concepts of axioms, theorems, and proofs. In Mathematics from the Visual World, you discover that these traditional techniques are not ends in themselves but tools for gaining new insights such as these * In exploring the surprisingly diverse ways of defining the center of a triangle, you learn that one type of center, and the associated circle that inscribes the triangle with that center, led to a breakthrough in skin-grafting techniques for surgeons. * The unusual shape of art galleries, with many nooks and crannies, raises the question of how many security cameras suffice to protect the room. You learn creative strategies for attacking this problem and reaching a solution. * The shape of the universe itself is subject to simple geometric analysis. The observations themselves may be tricky, but Dr. Starbird shows that distinguishing among three possible geometries is relatively straightforward once we have the data. On a more everyday level, you may be interested to know that the age-old problem of how to cut a square cake so that each piece has the same quantity of icing is easily solved. Famous Problems Geometry is also richly endowed with famous problems, some with life-or-death implications. Take the Delian Problem: Legend has it that in ancient Athens the citizens consulted the oracle at Delos for advice on how to stop a deadly plague. The oracle replied that the plague would end if the Athenians doubled the size of their cube-shaped altar to the god Apollo. So the Athenians doubled each side. But the plague continued unabated. The oracle had meant that they should double the altar's volume, not its linear dimensions. Doubling the cube in this way is a classic problem from antiquity, which Professor Starbird proves is impossible to solve with the traditional tools of a straightedge and compass. However, in the 17th century Isaac Newton showed that the construction can be done if one is allowed to make two marks on the straightedge. Dr. Starbird explains how this clever trick works. Here are some other famous problems that you investigate in Mathematics from the Visual World * How large is the Earth? The problem of measuring the Earth was solved around 200 B.C. by the Greek mathematician Eratosthenes. All he needed were observations of the shadow cast by the sun at two particular locations on a special date-plus a bit of geometry. * Why is it dark at night? A geometrical argument by 19th-century German astronomer Heinrich Wilhelm Olbers proved that the universe cannot be infinite in size, infinitely old, and compositionally the same in all directions. Otherwise, the night sky would be ablaze with light-which it isn't. * Königsberg bridges: Walkers in 18th-century Königsberg in Prussia amused themselves by seeing if they could cross all seven bridges in the central city without passing over the same bridge twice. Mathematician Leonhard Euler showed there is no solution, laying the foundation for the field of graph theory. A Delightful, Enlightening, and Invigorating Journey A specialist in geometry and topology, Dr. Starbird is not only Professor of Mathematics at The University of Texas at Austin but also University Distinguished Teaching Professor. He has won an impressive array of teaching awards, including most of the major teaching awards at UT, a prestigious statewide teaching award, and the national teaching award from the Mathematical Association of America. Professor Starbird believes that there is no excuse for a dull course on mathematics, a philosophy he pursues throughout Mathematics from the Visual World. In Lecture 1 he says, "To me, the satisfying aspect of a great proof occurs when the proof reveals some underlying, often surprising connection or relationship from which we see some truth that we previously could not fathom. When we see such a proof, we might say, 'Aha, that's why it's true.'" Although they don't always come easily, you have many such "aha" moments in this course. An old story recounts that King Ptolemy of Egypt asked Euclid, the father of geometry, whether there was a simpler way to understand the axioms, theorems, and proofs of the subject. Euclid's famous answer was, "There is no royal road to geometry." However, now there is Professor Starbird's road, which is a delightful, enlightening, and invigorating journey through one of the most glorious inventions of the human mind. Free Download Mastering AI: A Survival Guide to Our Superpowered Future (Audiobook) English | ASIN: B0CYJKCFLH | 2024 | 10 hours and 29 minutes | M4B@64 kbps | 306 MB Author: Jeremy Kahn Narrator: Kyle Tait A Fortune magazine journalist draws on his expertise and extensive contacts among the companies and scientists at the forefront of artificial intelligence to offer dramatic predictions of AI's impact over the next decade, from reshaping our economy and the way we work, learn, and create to unknitting our social fabric, jeopardizing our democracy, and fundamentally altering the way we think. Within the next five years, Jeremy Kahn predicts, AI will disrupt almost every industry and enterprise, with vastly increased efficiency and productivity. It will restructure the workforce, making AI copilots a must for every knowledge worker. It will revamp education, meaning children around the world can have personal, portable tutors. It will revolutionize health care, making individualized, targeted pharmaceuticals more affordable. It will compel us to reimagine how we make art, compose music, and write and publish books. The potential of generative AI to extend our skills, talents, and creativity as humans is undeniably exciting and promising. But while this new technology has a bright future, it also casts a dark and fearful shadow. AI will provoke pervasive, disruptive, potentially devastating knock-on effects. Leveraging his unrivaled access to the leaders, scientists, futurists, and others who are making AI a reality, Kahn will argue that if not carefully designed and vigilantly regulated AI will deepen income inequality, depressing wages while imposing winner-take-all markets across much of the economy. AI risks undermining democracy, as truth is overtaken by misinformation, racial bias, and harmful stereotypes. Continuing a process begun by the internet, AI will rewire our brains, likely inhibiting our ability to think critically, to remember, and even to get along with one another-unless we all take decisive action to prevent this from happening. Mastering AI delivers much-needed guidance for anyone eager to understand the AI boom-and what comes next.
