  1. Lex Paulson, "Cicero and the People's Will: Philosophy and Power at the End of the Roman Republic" English | 2022 | ISBN: 1316514110, 1009077384 | PDF | pages: 287 | 1.6 mb This book tells an overlooked story in the history of ideas, a drama of cut-throat politics and philosophy of mind. For it is Cicero, statesman and philosopher, who gives shape to the notion of will in Western thought, from criminal will to moral willpower and 'the will of the people'. In a single word - voluntas - he brings Roman law in contact with Greek ideas, chief among them Plato's claim that a rational elite must rule. When the republic falls to Caesarism, Cicero turns his political argument inward: Will is a force in the soul to win the virtue lost on the battlefield, the mark of inner freedom in an unfree age. Though this constitutional vision failed in his own time, Cicero's ideals of popular sovereignty and rational elitism have shaped and fractured the modern world - and Ciceronian creativity may yet save it. 3. Churchill's Citadel: Chartwell and the Gatherings Before the Storm by Katherine Carter English | November 5th, 2024 | ISBN: 0300270194 | 432 pages | True EPUB | 13.64 MB A major new history of Churchill in the 1930s, showing how his meetings at Chartwell, his country home, strengthened his fight against the Nazis In the 1930s, amidst an impending crisis in Europe, Winston Churchill found himself out of government and with little power. In these years, Chartwell, his country home in Kent, became the headquarters of his campaign against Nazi Germany. He invited trusted advisors and informants, including Albert Einstein and T. E. Lawrence, who could strengthen his hand as he worked tirelessly to sound the alarm at the prospect of war. Katherine Carter tells the extraordinary story of the remarkable but little known meetings that took place behind closed doors at Chartwell. From household names to political leaders, diplomats to spies, Carter reveals a fascinating cast of characters, each of whom made their mark on Churchill's thinking and political strategy. With Chartwell as his base, Churchill gathered intelligence about Germany's preparations for war-and, in doing so, put himself in a position to change the course of history. 4. Barry Singer, "Churchill Style: The Art of Being Winston Churchill Ed 2" English | ISBN: 081099643X | 2012 | 240 pages | AZW3 | 6 MB One of the most iconic and endlessly fascinating figures of the 20th century, Winston Churchill has been the subject of any number of books, but none of them have analyzed his lifestyle as a way to really understand the man. This book features a vivid and entertaining timeline of his public history, but also focuses on the more personal, nonwork aspects of his day-to-day life, covering topics such as autos, books, cigars, dining, fashion, home, libations, and pastimes. Churchill lived an extravagant life, but in reality did not have much money. His ability to live well beyond his means is a lesson that will intrigue many. Praise for Churchill Style: "Despite the hundreds of books written on the wartime leader, there has been surprisingly little compiled on his lifestyle. Barry Singer-a writer, self-described Churchill fanatic and proprietor of Manhattan's Chartwell Booksellers (which touts itself as "the world's only Winston Churchill bookshop")-has corrected the deficit." - Read more Download Links RapidGator https://rg.to/file/80a20362eb538865425b104982577f6f/jsmgd.7z.html TakeFile https://takefile.link/q1jjxvnz5jvs/jsmgd.7z.html Fileaxa https://fileaxa.com/qxahmvhw6517/jsmgd.7z Fikper https://fikper.com/qoCnBrYKtw/jsmgd.7z.html
  5. David Dilks, "Churchill and Company: Allies and Rivals in War and Peace" English | ISBN: 1848857187 | 2012 | 336 pages | AZW3 | 850 KB Winston Churchill is one of the dominating figures of the 20th century. In this stimulating and original book, David Dilks presents Churchill, not only as a war leader and international statesman, but also as a private person with a rich variety of friendships and rivalries. New and penetrating light is directed on Churchill during World War II. This was a period of dramatic relationships: conflicts with General de Gaulle in contrast with respect and affection for Roosevelt (feelings not entirely reciprocated by the American president). In the post-war era, relations with Stalin, and preoccupation with the Soviet Union and the Cold War all dominated Churchill's subsequent career, a time when he was able to renew his working relationship with his wartime colleague General â€" now President - Eisenhower. Whether in or out of office, Churchill's influence was felt in all areas of British politics. David Dilks brings Churchill vividly to life for all those interested in modern British, military and international history. 8. Christians in Caesar's Household: The Emperors' Slaves in the Makings of Christianity (Inventing Christianity) by Michael Flexsenhar III English | February 21, 2019 | ISBN: 027108233X | 208 pages | MOBI | 5.84 Mb In this volume, Michael Flexsenhar III advances the argument that imperial slaves and freedpersons in the Roman Empire were essential to early Christians' self-conception as a distinct people in the Mediterranean and played a multifaceted role in the making of early Christianity. Scholarship in early Christianity has for centuries viewed Roman emperors' slaves and freedmen as responsible for ushering Christianity onto the world stage, traditionally using Paul's allusion to "the saints from Caesar's household" in Philippians 4:22 as a core literary lens. Merging textual and material evidence with diaspora and memory studies, Flexsenhar expands on this narrative to explore new and more nuanced representations of this group, showing how the long-accepted stories of Christian slaves and freepersons in Caesar's household should not be taken at face value but should instead be understood within the context of Christian myth- and meaning-making. Flexsenhar analyzes textual and material evidence from the first to the sixth century, spanning Roman Asia, the Aegean rim, Gaul, and the coast of North Africa as well as the imperial capital itself. As a result, this book shows how stories of the emperor's slaves were integral to key developments in the spread of Christianity, generating origin myths in Rome and establishing a shared history and geography there, differentiating and negotiating assimilation with other groups, and expressing commemorative language, ritual acts, and a material culture. With its thoughtful critical readings of literary and material sources and its fresh analysis of the lived experiences of imperial slaves and freedpersons, Christians in Caesar's Household is indispensable reading for scholars of early Christianity, the origins of religion, and the Roman Empire. 9. Christian Supremacy: Reckoning with the Roots of Antisemitism and Racism by Magda Teter English | May 16, 2023 | ISBN: 0691242585 | 408 pages | MOBI | 29 Mb A panoramic cultural and legal history that traces the roots of antisemitism and racism to early Christian theology Since the earliest days of Christianity, theologians expressed pervasive anxiety about Jews as equal members of society, and, with European expansion in the early modern period, that anxiety extended to people of color. This troubling legacy still haunts us today. Christian Supremacy demonstrates how theological and legal frameworks created by the church centuries ago laid the seeds of antisemitism and anti-Black racism and reveals why Christian identity lies at the heart of the world's violent white supremacy movements. In a powerful historical narrative spanning nearly two millennia, Magda Teter describes how Christian theology of late antiquity cast Jews as "children born to slavery," and how the supposed theological inferiority of Jews became inscribed into law, creating tangible structures that reinforced a sense of Christian domination and superiority. With the dawn of European colonialism, a distinct brand of European Christian supremacy found expression in the legally sanctioned enslavement and exploitation of people of color, later taking the form of white Christian supremacy in the New World. Drawing on a wealth of primary evidence ranging from the theological and legal to the philosophical and artistic, Christian Supremacy is a profound reckoning with history that traces the roots of the modern rejection of Jewish and Black equality to an enduring Christian heritage of exclusion, intolerance, and persecution. 10. Christian Identity, Piety, and Politics in Early Modern England (ReFormations: Medieval and Early Modern) by Robert E. Stillman English | July 15, 2021 | ISBN: 0268200416 | 488 pages | PDF | 4.22 Mb This book challenges the adequacy of identifying religious identity with confessional identity. Stillman argues that questions of religious identity have dominated historical and literary studies of the early modern period for over a decade. But his aim is not to resolve the controversies about early modern religious identity by negotiating new definitions of English Protestants, Catholics, or "moderate" and "radical" Puritans. Instead, he provides an understanding of the culture that produced such a heterogeneous range of believers by attending to particular figures, such as Antonio del Corro, John Harington, Henry Constable, and Aemilia Lanyer, who defined their pious identity by refusing to assume a partisan label for themselves. All of the figures in this study attempted as Christians to situate themselves beyond, between, or against particular confessions for reasons that both foreground pious motivations and inspire critical scrutiny. The desire to move beyond confessions enabled the birth of new political rhetorics promising inclusivity for the full range of England's Christians and gained special prominence in the pursuit of a still-imaginary Great Britain. Christian Identity, Piety, and Politics in Early Modern England is a book that early modern literary scholars need to read. It will also interest students and scholars of history and religion. 16. James McGilvray, "Chomsky: Language, Mind and Politics Ed 2" English | ISBN: 0745649890 | 2013 | 288 pages | MOBI | 1000 KB Noam Chomsky has made major contributions to three fields: political history and analysis, linguistics, and the philosophies of mind, language, and human nature. In this thoroughly revised and updated volume, James McGilvray provides a critical introduction to Chomsky's work in these three key areas and assesses their continuing importance and relevance for today. In an incisive and comprehensive analysis, McGilvray argues that Chomsky's work can be seen as a unified intellectual project. He shows how Chomsky adapts the tools of natural science to the study of mind and of language in particular and explains why Chomsky's "rationalist" approach to the mind continues to be opposed by the majority of contemporary cognitive scientists. The book also discusses some of Chomsky's central political themes in depth, examining how Chomsky's view of the good life and the ideal form of social organization is related to and in part dependent on his biologically based account of human nature and the place of language within it. As in the first edition, McGilvray emphasizes the distinction between common sense and science and the difference between rationalist and empiricist approaches to the mind, making clear the importance of these themes for understanding Chomsky's work and showing that they are based on elementary observations that are accessible to everyone. This edition has been extensively re-written to emphasize Chomsky's recent work, which increasingly 'biologizes' the study of language and mind and - by implication - the study of human nature. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of philosophy, linguistics, and politics, as well as to all those keen to develop a critical understanding of one of the most controversial and important thinkers writing today. 19. China's Urbanization in the New Round of Technological Revolution, 2020-2050 (Routledge Studies on the Chinese Economy) by Wang Wei, Deng Yusong, Wang Ruimin English | April 16, 2024 | ISBN: 1032663146 | 232 pages | PDF | 5.51 Mb Based on a major research project undertaken by a team at the Institute of Market Economy, Development Research Center of the State Council of China, a project which included extensive survey research, and involved also many international scholars including researchers at the World Economic Forum Research Center and OECD, this book explores the possible future trajectories for urbanization in China. The book goes on to assess how current technological advances are likely to affect future urbanization and concludes by setting out how China should seize the opportunities from new technological advances and the associated transformation and upgrading of economic and social structures, and coordinate the development of "technology, factors of production, industry and institutions" as an integrated engine for high quality future urbanization. 20. China's Professional Employer Association Law by Wu Wenfang English | June 14, 2024 | ISBN: 1032560916 | 222 pages | PDF | 2.77 Mb This book studies the coordination mechanism of labor relations from the perspective of China's law on employer association. The first part of the book examines the definition, functions, and institutional basis of employer associations in different types of labor relations, focusing on the complementarity between the law and the coordination mechanism of labor relations in the context of different social environments, institutional frameworks, and their different responses to deregulated labor policies. It then reviews the legislation, responsibilities, and institutional guarantees of employer associations in modern China. The second part outlines the current limitations of legal resources in terms of subject matter, parti[beeep]tion mechanisms, and parti[beeep]tion channels that constrain the coordination of industrial relations by China's employer associations. 21. Kathryn Hellerstein, "China and Ashkenazic Jewry: Transcultural Encounters" English | ISBN: 3110683776 | 2022 | 370 pages | EPUB | 6 MB In the past thirty years, the Sino-Jewish encounter in modern China has increasingly garnered scholarly and popular attention. This volume will be the first to focus on the transcultural exchange between Ashkenazic Jewry and China. The essays here investigate how this exchange of texts and translations, images and ideas, has enriched both Jewish and Chinese cultures and prepared for a global, inclusive world literature. The book breaks new ground in the field, covering such new topics as the images of China in Yiddish and German Jewish letters, the intersectionality of the Jewish and Chinese literature in illuminating the implications for a truly global and inclusive world literature, the biographies of prominent figures in Chinese-Jewish connections, the Chabad engagement in contemporary China. Some of the fundamental debates in the current scholarship will also be addressed, with a special emphasis on how many Jewish refugees arrived in Shanghai and how much interaction occurred between the Jewish refugees and the resident Chinese population during the wartime and its aftermath. 22. Robin C. Moore, "Childhood's Domain" English | 2017 | ISBN: 1138563587 | PDF | pages: 341 | 379.1 mb Where do children go and what do they do outdoors? How do they evaluate their own environment? What are their likes and dislikes? What would they like to see added or changed? How can the outdoor environment support healthy child development? How is the impact of the environment affected by its social and physical characteristics? How can its developmental impact be strengthened through public policy? These are some of the questions addressed by Childhood's Domain, originally published in 1986, in which children, as 'expert' research collaborators, describe their largely unseen life outdoors. On field trips to secret play places around their homes, in streets, in parks, and in places laid waste and abandoned by adult society, they reveal both the pleasure and difficulties of play in the city. A central concept of the book is a new term, terra ludens, which represents the accumulated developmental support that each child receives from her or his personal play spaces. Terra ludens reflects the degree to which each child acquires an intuitive sense of how the world is by playing with it. Field research for the book was conducted in London, Stevenage New Town and Stoke-on-Trent. Neighbourhood sites were deliberately chosen to contrast and compare children's reactions to the characteristics of 'big city', 'new town' and 'old industrial city' environments. The most interesting experiences were encountered with children in Stoke-on-Trent. Here, in former mineral workings functioning as 'playgrounds' equipped with relics from the heyday of the industrial revolution, in new open spaces reclaimed from industrial 'wastelands', and in older parks dating from Victorian times, children demonstrated the creative possibilities of a landscape of opportunities lacking in the other two sites. Even so, children in all three sites revealed great ingenuity in making do with whatever resources they could find to create viable play environments for themselves. Chequered Past, Uncertain Future uncovers influences from Turkey, Persia, Arabia, and Britain that have shaped Pakistan, as well as showcases the region's diverse and rich tapestry of peoples, and its pluralistic, multicultural society. The book also describes the post-1947 shift-following the partition of India and the establishment of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan-as the country became more religiously conservative and autocratic, intensifying sectarian and ethnic divisions. For most of their history, the people of Pakistan have found themselves under the control of military dictators who suppress civil liberties and freedom of speech and action-a trend that persists today.
