He's such an earnest blue-collar worker that one almost expects him to carry his saxophone in a lunch pail instead of the standard instrument case. Any Second Impression would mirror the first: Alexander is a tireless craftsman who loves to play and, more to the point, always shows up ready to play. Nothing seems to impede him, even the severe back pain he was suffering as this latest recording was being made. As the premise behind Second Impression was bold spontaneity, Alexander gathered around him a trio of longtime friends and colleagues whose musical antennae reside on the same wavelength, thus assuring that whatever path he might choose would be firm and secure. Pianist Harold Mabern and drummer Joe Farnsworth have been mainstays on a number of Alexander's previous albums, while bassist Bob Cranshaw, the rhythm section's relative "newcomer" at age eighty-three, had worked alongside Mabern since their days in Chicago in the '50s and brought a wealth of experience to the task at hand. Needless to say, Alexander had no second thoughts about Cranshaw's inclusion on the team. Once the group was intact and ready, tunes were chosen and arrangements worked out in the studio. Mabern suggested Jimmy Smith's juicy "T-Bone Steak" and Wes Montgomery's boppish "Full House" to complement three originals by Alexander, Sergio Mendez' seductive "So Many Stars" and the standards "Secret Love" and Matt Dennis / Tom Adair's ode to despair, "Everything Happens to Me" (to these ears, the session's apex). Farnsworth contributed the funky "Jennie's Dance," on which Mabern plays Fender Rhodes and Cranshaw electric bass, as they do on "Secret Love" and "Full House." Alexander wrote the title song, which raises the album's curtain, as well as the upbeat "Blues for Mo" and even snappier "Frenzy." While Mabern, Cranshaw and Farnsworth play their roles with enthusiasm and assurance, and Mabern is an especially engaging and perceptive soloist, it's clear that they are essentially along for the ride, lending Alexander a broad canvas on which to paint his sharp and radiant sound-portraits. Alexander, for his part, is invariably eloquent and persuasive, reinforcing his stature as one of the jazz world's most astute and accomplished tenor saxophonists. Backed on this CD by the all-time great pianist Cedar Walton and young chums bassist Dwayne Burno and drummer Joe Farnsworth, Alexander has all the tools necessary to build a skyscraper of great jazz music, and he does. There are three Jazz Messengers-like cuts that stand above the rest, with trombonist Steve Davis and trumpeter Jim Rotundi jumpin' in. They, the leader, and Farnsworth are all in the excellent ensemble One for All, and if you like these, you should also pick up on their recordings. The larger ensemble numbers "GCCJ," Walton's famous "Midnight Waltz" (aka "Twilight Waltz"), and the Davis original "I Found You" all pop and burn. The first has a singsong boppin' melody, the waltz is fairly up and even-keeled, and the original has a slight bossa feel married to a lovely melody. All are outstanding. The rest of the material also stands tall -- a hip funk original of Alexander's "Unsung Hero" might be the highlight of the disc and Walton's "Fiesta Espanola" is supercharged and exciting, while Alexander's prowess on ballads is never more delicately executed than during "Stars Fell on Alabama." It should be noted that Walton's performance, as well as his influence on these proceedings, takes the music up several notches. Alexander has made some very solid CDs, and at a comparably young age (he was 28 during these sessions) is making a bid for being the very best young tenor saxophonist on the scene today. This CD is highly recommended for its content and for the excellent recording techniques that let Alexander and his buddies flourish. -- Michael G. Super Jet A defiant clatter of snare drum introduces this joyously retro live set from young Austrian drummer Bernd Reiter. Aided by the doyen of New York mainstream tenor saxophone, Illinois-born Eric Alexander, Reiter and his band swing through the kind of collection that might have been cut by Dexter Gordon when he too was on the Danish Steeplechase label in the mid-Seventies. And everyone's wearing suits on the cover, natch. Not that Alexander possesses the instantly identifiable Gordon tone (he uses vibrato only sparingly), but he does have that effortless authority and melodic style. The sleek Helmut Kagerer on guitar also has his ears fixed on the jazz of the Seventies mainstream in his case, Grant Green springs to mind, but also of course the immortal Wes Montgomery. And pianist Olivier Hutman takes on the Kenny Drew/Wynton Kelly role with terrific panache. One of the many enjoyable things about the album is the length of the tracks. Reiter's cavalier disregard for the likelihood of radio play makes a nice change there are only six tracks, none of them clocking in at under 8Â? minutes. So everyone gets to stretch out and blow. As the album's title suggests, several tunes are taken from Hank Mobley's catalogue: the title track and Uh Huh (from his 1962 Workout album) plus Getting' and Jettin' (from Another Workout, recorded in 1961 but not released until 1985). The other three tracks are an unrecognizable I Want To Hold Your Hand, Jimmy Van Heusen's All The Way and Tadd Dameron's Super Jet. The whole enterprise is suffused with energy and warmth. In fact there's nothing not to like here, apart from a bit of intrusive snare rattle triggered by Viktor Nyberg's double bass tough to avoid on a live recording. The musicians are all at the top of their game and locked in together in a way that only develops after a good spell on the road. Kids if you want to know how to swing, listen to this.
