Up & Down - Bonus Track 2 Dr Project Point Blank Blues Band have been playing the blues for 20 years this year. The line-up may have changed quite a bit along the way, but the style of music has remained the same. Along the way they have helped to firmly establish a blues scene in the former Yugoslavia, and the release of their seventh album "8 Blue Balls" shows that they are an outfit worth taking seriously. Things start way out in left field with a short waltz introduction, "By The Way (You Look Tonight)," which will have you wondering if you have come to the right place. This is soon displaced by the rocking guitar intro to "Johnny Passed Away" which provides a good indication of where the band are coming from. Although the sound is largely dominated by tasty guitar work (from the Dr: Dragoljub Crncevic, who also handles most of the vocals), there is also plenty of keyboards on offer too, courtesy of Darko Grujic. The band show that they are happy at slowing things down on the excellent "A Cross To Bear," with its soulful (and doleful) vocals. John O'Leary (ex Savoy Brown) contributes the very fine harp licks here, and elsewhere. All of the songs are originals, and they make the most of the guitar and organ which are laid over the rock steady beat from the rhythm section of Jovan Pejcinovic (drums) and Zoran Milenkovic (bass). It all works really well too, Even though there is a rocky edge to much of the guitar playing, it never really feels like a blues/rock album. The album has plenty of high spots, with the driving instrumental, "Blue Ball," "Some Other Place"--if Jarvis Cocker from Pulp sang the blues, this is what it would sound like--and the almost funky "Lazy Mama" all worthy of extra special mention. After the full version of "By The Way (You Look Tonight)," a waltz sounding like it is being played on an old wind-up gramophone, complete with Jim Reeves-like vocals, there are a couple of bonus tracks just to make the package complete. The first, "You Give Me A Reason" has an almost Doors-like keyboard sound to it, whilst "Up & Down" sounds like it would make a great encore on a live show. "8 Blue Balls" is a very good album indeed. DR Project Point Blank Blues Band are a fine outfit, and yes, they can definitely play the blues. They also write top quality songs, many of which have great hooklines to them. "8 Blue Balls" is an album that is well worth tracking down, especially if you like your blues to have a raw, rocky edge to it. The Leap O' Faith Canadian roots/blues artist and producer Linden hasn't made a bad or even lackluster album under his own name or with his occasional Blackie & the Rodeo Kings cohorts. This 1994 Juno award winner is an unqualified success as well as somewhat of a blueprint for his approach. His combination of subtle rock, blues, gospel, and folk played with acoustic and electric instruments was already perfected even on this early effort and his songwriting reflects that. The originals that dominate the set are fully realized slices of strummy blues, sung in an affable style by Linden who crafts terrific hooks that are never obvious or forced. A few obscure covers (from Sonny Terry, Blind Lemon Jefferson, and Willie Dixon) spice the proceedings, occasionally pushing the mood into a deeper blues groove and gospel direction. Linden's vibrant version of the standard "Keep Your Lamp Trimmed and Burning" adds female backing vocals to highlight the churchy feel, but it's his stunning acoustic guitar work that drives the performance. Some of Linden's lyrics flirt with the obtuse as on the opening to the folksy "Still Yesterday" where he is seated between two "cigar smoking infants, waiting on the runway." Fellow Canadians and members of the Band (Rick Danko and Garth Hudson along with American Levon Helm) are featured on a sticker adorning the disc but their contributions are minimal. Bruce Cockburn is more of a presence but this is all Linden's show. His guitar work, whether plugged in or not, is superb throughout and his dusky vocals, similar to those of Danko and to a lesser extent T Bone Burnett, are affecting yet understated. Comparisons to the Band are understandable, but Linden has crafted his own style for a set that remains an undiscovered gem. Preston was a prodigy on organ and piano, recording during the early '60s for Vee-Jay and touring with Little Richard. He was a loose-limbed regular on the mid-'60s ABC TV series Shindig, proving his talent as both a vocalist and pianist, and he built an enviable reputation as a session musician, even backing the Beatles on their Let It Be album. That impressive Beatles connection led to Preston's big break as a solo artist with his own Apple album, but it was his early-'70s soul smashes "Outa-Space" and the high-flying vocal "Will It Go Round in Circles" for A&M that put Preston on the permanent musical map. Sporting a humongous Afro and an omnipresent gap-toothed grin, Preston showed that his enduring gospel roots were never far removed from his joyous approach.
