Golson came on the bop scene about a decade later and has been a force ever since, whether playing, composing, arranging, buttressing Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers or leading groups of various sizes. In 1956, Golson wrote "Whisper Not," the first of several of his works that may properly be labeled jazz standards. That list includes (but is not limited to) "I Remember Clifford," "Blues March," "Along Came Betty" and "Killer Joe." On tenor sax, Golson has his own voice, a husky, vibrato-laden dialect out of the Ben Webster / Coleman Hawkins school with an occasional nod to Lester Young and subtle permutations that set him apart from those and other forebears. If time has dulled Golson's razor-sharp mind or degraded his admirable technique, it's certainly not apparent on Horizon Ahead, on which Golson is in total command of a much-more-youthful rhythm section. To further press home the point, he composed four of the album's nine selections including the title song, (presumably) arranged the first eight tracks, and even wrote the elaborate liner notes. Aside from Golson's winning themes, the menu consists of Ellington's "Mood Indigo" and "Don't Get Around Much Anymore," the standards "Lulu's Back in Town" and "Three Little Words," and Carl Allen's solo drum piece, "Out of the Darkness, and Into the Light" (the last preceded by Golson's astute spoken introduction). There's a pleasing aura of self-assurance and self-control throughout, even when Golson and his mates are wailing, as on "Jump Start," "Domingo" or "Three Little Words." Pianist Mike LeDonne plays his role as accompanist / soloist with aplomb, as does bassist Buster Williams (who duets with Golson on a charming version of "Lulu's Back in Town"). Allen's timekeeping is up to its usual standards, so no more need be said about that. At an age that is far past retirement for most mortals, Benny Golson not only keeps working but showing a younger generation that when it comes to contemporary jazz, maturity and experience are dependable allies in the ongoing battle with Father Time. It was in Chicago that he first played professionally, working from the age of 15 with musicians such as Bunky Green and Larry Novak. In the mid- to late 70s LaSpina was a member of Chet Baker's band, worked with Red Norvo, and also appeared with Marian McPartland, a collaboration that extended into the mid-80s and included recordings such as Personal Choice. Based in New York City from the end of the 70s, LaSpina also played with Mel Lewis' big band, Stan Getz, and at different times with guitarists Jim Hall, Mary Osborne, Jack Wilkins, and Vic Juris. He also worked with Andy LaVerne, Dave Liebman, Al Cohn, Zoot Sims, Benny Carter, and Bob Brookmeyer, among many. LaSpina has worked with numerous singers over the years, among them Bill Henderson, Mark Murphy, Susannah McCorkle, Michael Feinstein, and Carol Sloane. For several years LaSpina taught bass and improvisation at New York University and other seats of learning. LaSpina is an accomplished composer and his recording sessions as leader feature much of his own relaxed and tuneful music. On these dates, the band is usually a quartet with regular members being Billy Drewes (saxophone), Marc Copland or Jim McNeely (piano), and Jeff Hirshfield (drums). In addition to playing the upright acoustic bass LaSpina also plays electric bass, both fretted and fretless. The search for the perfect producer to capture this new sound was a short one. With limited expectations of a returned phone call, the band first reached out to their dream producer, multi-grammy winner Jim Scott, who was personally responsible for some of their favorite records (Tedeschi Trucks Band, Wilco, Tom Petty, Rolling Stones, etc). They were overjoyed to hear back from Jim Scott's manager the following day saying that Jim was extremely interested in producing the band's next record. After months of planning, workshopping and writing songs, and rehearsing, the band flew to LA during the summer of 2015 to record the songs with Jim Scott that would soon come to be known as "From the Horizon." With a release in the Spring of 2015, The Broadcast has big expectations for "From the Horizon," and rightfully so. While still firmly rooted in the trademark soulful rock n' roll sound as heard on the leadoff track "Steamroller," their growth as a band is most evident in such tracks as "On the Edge" and "Eyes of a Woman." Atom Hub Toolshed v2 KONTAKT-HORiZON (11/12/14) Atom Hub Toolshed v2 KONTAKT-HORiZON HORiZON | December 7, 2014 | 565 MB MASSIVELY updated library from 2012. I had visited my toolshed already during recordings for the Cottage pack. I had sampled a few metal and iron tools, but had not dedicated as much time as I should. Whereas it deserved it, I decided to get back to stay a little longer and to record systematically and better all sounds, which acoustically characterized it. Already my grandfather packed it (with a different intention though) with - nowadays nicely rusty - various metal and iron tools and items, so I started with recording clinks, hits and impacts of wrenches, screwdrivers, clams, nails, screws, wires, rakes, tiny cans, spades and hoes. Then I proceeded to saw for a while, later turned a microphone to plastic and metal buckets. Recorded also banging against metal roof, small wooden wardrobe and floor and finally, picturesque squeakings of the door. I have hung items on wires, used their combinations to get some unusual sounds... then I took my time to play with the samples both in Kontakt and also outside of it to add more musical, tonal character to the library. The result is many drone and synth/pad patches, looped "soundscrapes" as well as a lot of multis consisting of the created patches (this is addictive). Whether you are scoring some dark fantasy or sci/horror PC game, or you just want to add some weird colours to your sound design, Toolshed offers you all you need to get lost in underground mines, abandoned factories, frozen spaceships and their dark corners... What's in? METALS - shovels, rakes, spades, tools, nails, buckets, bins, tins, tacks... WOOD - handles, barres, door hits, screeches, squeaks, knocks, beam hits, drawer rustles... LO-FI - The original Toolshed samples from the times it was firstly released. The Folder contains various metal, wood, plastic sounds caught on mic from another perspective. SOUNDSCRAPES - looped samples of mostly metalish nature, created using various metal objects. TONAL - category of standardly tuned samples.
