His sensibility is right out of the heyday of '50s and '60s bop. His confident, intense style, and his trio with bassist Gregg August and drummer Rudy Royston will - and - should inspire comparisons to Sonny Rollins' groups. Yet despite all this, Allen's approach feels thoroughly modern and fresh. Why? Well, because no one else is doing this today. Above all else, Allen economizes. The songs on Shine!, his trio's second album for Sunnyside, run two to five minutes. Every bar is precious; every note counts. The 36-year-old plays with the adventure-some spirit of a free-jazzer but the melodic and rhythmic grounding of a bebopper. On tunes like the openers "Esre!" and "Sonhouse," vigorous workouts that segue into each other, the trio's elastic nature evinces itself. Tunes are built on simple melodic underpinnings, but the music is anything but simple. For one thing, no one keeps the time - August and Royston are improvising as much as Allen. In fact, the drummer may be improvising most of all, because we rarely hear the actual rhythm; instead, we feel it below the surface, as each member of the trio surely does. They do this to varying degrees; Royston's drums swing gently , while August patiently builds a bass solo. The Breakers Though they had been collaborating on music together for awhile, the Montreal-based duo Valleys made their debut with 2009's Sometimes Water Kills People on Semprini Records. Multi-instrumentalists Matilda Perks (keys, guitar, sequencer) & Marc St. Louis (guitar, keyboards, drums) both write and sing, crafting dreamily atmospheric electronic pop with guitars that's filled with melancholy emotion, but is also unfailingly melodic and sweet. They followed up the album with a couple of EPs (2010's Stoner and 2011's River Phoenix) as they played gigs and honed their sound. The duo signed with New York's Kanine Records and began working on an album with producer Alec Dippie from British post-punk group the Monochrome Set. Are You Just Going to Stand There and Talk Weird All Night? is filled with loss (for Perks it was the passing of family members, for St. Louis it was the ending of a relationship) and different ways of dealing with it (Perks' Shambhala Buddhist beliefs, St. Louis' maturation process). The Cutter [alternate version] 4:06 The answer is a resounding yes -- Echo & the Bunnymen's Crystal Days: 1979-1999, a four-disc set boasting a great built-in book with a biography and track-by-track commentary, is worth every penny. Through 71 tracks, it does an excellent job by catering to the longtime fan and merely curious, running through all the hits and selecting standout album tracks, rarities, and unreleased curiosities, all worthwhile. The very fact that compilation producer Andy Zax was driven to put this project into motion after realizing he just had to find a way to get stellar B-sides like the Velvets-meets-Byrds heaven of "Angels and Devils" and the Peel Session version of the experimental "No Hands" into circulation tells you right off that you're in good hands. If this great-sounding box proves anything, it's that the Bunnymen don't deserve to be merely regarded as an excellent '80s band; sure, they've had some bumps along the road, but despite having thrived in a decade known for plasticity and fad crazes, this collection establishes that their legacy exists apart from the negative connotations the "'80s band" tag carries. And by carefully selecting songs from their '90s incarnation, they throw a pie in the face of those who believe all reunions are artistic no-nos. The first three discs run chronologically through the band's first 20 years, occasionally throwing surprises into the mix with alternative versions and outtakes. The only gripe one might have is the favoring of the "All Night Version" of "The Killing Moon" over the original, which would be nitpicky. The final disc is chiefly occupied by live covers, including a great set-closing combo of the Velvets' "Heroin" and their own "Do It Clean." By Daniel Hope) - Daniel Hope Described in his publicity materials as "the British violinist," as if he were the only one, Daniel Hope is at least the most versatile British violinist of the early twenty-first century. An advocate of contemporary music, he has also performed Beethoven and Schumann with the period-instrument ensemble Concerto K??ln, recorded music inspired by Indian classical composer-performer Ravi Shankar, and partnered with actor Klaus Maria Brandauer in conceptual projects involving music and the spoken word. Hope's father, poet and novelist Christopher Hope, was persecuted in South Africa for his anti-government views, so the family fled to England when Daniel was six months old. His mother, Eleanor, got a job as secretary to Yehudi Menuhin. Daniel became a playmate of Menuhin's grandchildren, and although the old master was not a significant figure in the boy's life, he did inspire Daniel to take up the violin under the supervision of neighbor Sheila Nelson, one of England's top violin teachers to children. Hope went on to study with several Russian instructors at the Royal College of Music, then traveled to Hamburg to study from 1992 to 1998 with another Russian, Zakhar Bron. He also took degrees from the Royal Academy of Music in London. As a student in Hamburg, Hope developed a friendship with composer Alfred Schnittke (in 2003 he was entrusted with the premiere of the composer's recently discovered violin sonata from 1955), and would soon devote himself largely though never exclusively to the music of Schnittke and other living composers. He has commissioned works from the likes of Jan M??ller-Wieland, Huw Watkins, and Roxanna Panufnik. Hope's career began to take off in his mid-twenties, and in 2002 he was recruited on one week's notice to perform on tour with the Beaux Arts Trio. Almost immediately he was accepted as a permanent member of the ensemble and worked to spice up the group's fairly conservative repertoire with commissioned works by such composers as Gy??rgy Kurt??g and Mark-Anthony Turnage to celebrate the trio's 50th anniversary. Hope continued to perform and record as a soloist; in 2004 he won three major awards for his recording of the Berg (in its original version) and Britten concertos. He also serves as associate artistic director of the eclectic Savannah (Georgia) Music Festival, and since 2010 as Artistic Partner at Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. In 2004 he married double bassist Annika Pigorsch, a player in the Radio Symphony Orchestra in Amsterdam, the city where Hope has made his home base. Hope has also written three books, as of 2011, about his life and about music, and has hosted radio and television programs about music. West Side Baby 12. Cheeta When they referred to consistently amazing guitarist Snooks Eaglin as a human jukebox in his New Orleans hometown, they weren't dissing him in the slightest. The blind Eaglin was a beloved figure in the Crescent City, not only for his gritty, Ray Charles-inspired vocal delivery and wholly imaginative approach to the guitar, but for the seemingly infinite storehouse of oldies that he was liable to pull out on-stage at any second -- often confounding his bemused band in the process! His earliest recordings in 1958 for Folkways presented Eaglin as a solo acoustic folk-blues artist with an extremely eclectic repertoire. His dazzling fingerpicking was nothing short of astonishing, but he really wanted to be making R&B with a band. Imperial Records producer Dave Bartholomew granted him the opportunity in 1960, and the results were sensational. Eaglin's fluid, twisting lead guitar on the utterly infectious "Yours Truly" (a Bartholomew composition first waxed by Pee Wee Crayton) and its sequel, "Cover Girl," was unique on the New Orleans R&B front, while his brokenhearted cries on "Don't Slam That Door" and "That Certain Door" were positively mesmerizing. Out of NowhereEaglin stuck with Imperial through 1963, when the firm closed up shop in New Orleans, without ever gaining national exposure. Eaglin found a home with Black Top Records in the 1980s, releasing four albums with the label, including 1988's Out of Nowhere (re-released on CD by P-Vine in 2007) and 1995's Soul's Edge. In 2003 P-Vine put out Soul Train from Nawlins, an album drawn from a live set Eaglin did at 1995's Park Tower Blues Festival. A collection of Eaglin's earliest recordings, all done on acoustic guitar, was released in 2005 by Smithsonian Folkways as New Orleans Street Singer. 'Songs From My Funeral' could well be described as a concept album in that the themes for the songs are murder ballads, songs about death and the consequences of the opening up of the American Midwest through the building of railways; sometimes more than one motif is included in a song. Even the lullaby sung at the end is distinctly unsettling. All the songs are reinterpretations of traditional American folk ballads. An interesting, if somewhat academic, discussion on the resurgent interest of these American folk classics and the relation between them and the psyche of present day post-millennium America can be found in Anat Pick's essay: 'Death and Democracy: Snakefarm's Songs from my Funeral and the New World Gothic'. Now all this sounds quite gloomy and depressing, but it's not. Thanks to Snakefarm's reworking of these folk classics, the results whilst dark and atmospheric are actually surprisingly up-tempo. The darkness comes from Anna Domino's vocals, which through the use of filters and other effects sounds cool, sultry but at times also detached and remote. There are distinct similarities here to the voices of Laurie Anderson and of Margo Timmins (singer with the Cowboy Junkies). Little Water (1:07) Releasing her new album The Water, Sam Buckingham has distilled an ambitious pilgrimage into songs that confront fear, convey heartache and celebrate adventure, desire and devotion. With the majority of songs written over an eighteen month sojourn throughout Latin America, Buckingham immersed herself in new cultures and varied pursuits; volunteering alongside Sea Shepherd on a turtle conservation project; working on a permaculture farm in a remote Costa Rican village, studying Spanish and acrylic painting in a Nicaraguan township and completing formal yoga teacher training in the south of Mexico. Arriving at each new place, Buckingam sought local musicians, street performers and creative collaborations, as songs were written in hotel rooms, on top of dense jungle mountains and every conceivable place in-between. "It was a time of intense exploration and growth - I was affected by so many people and experiences that I was quite certain they needed to be written about. I'd pick up my guitar already knowing, in a way, what I wanted to say." The Water became somewhat of an audio journal where subtle rhythms and the emotive language of Latin America sit beside fragile folk music, rousing Americana and pop-inflected hooks. There are fascinating surprises scattered throughout the record, while Buckingham explores the marriage of Australian folk with Latino influence - like a distorted steel pan bursting out from underneath a crunching electric guitar and heartbreaking harmonies - with the core of each song solidified by Buckingham's intricate storytelling and timeless voice. "Her songwriting and astounding voice gripped me" - Timber & Steel Multi-instrumentalist and long-time collaborator Kent Eastwood lent his hand to the piano, organ, keyboard, acoustic & electric guitars, banjo, mandolin and some perfectly placed backing vocals on Jolene and Elephant Man. Recent Golden Guitar winner Fanny Lumsden and CMT's 'Nashville' songwriter Timothy James Bowen feature on a pair of stunning duets and Dan Stanley Freeman commanded the upright and electric bass. Renowned for his raw approach and location recording, producer, engineer and drummer Syd Green sourced a converted horse stable on the outskirts of Jervis Bay for the band to bunker down for a week and record - immersing themselves in the natural surrounds without metropolitan distraction. "I sent everyone the rough demos with strict instructions not to learn the songs. It was just about knowing the stories and really feeling that before we came together - so where to take each song was a very spontaneous and natural collaboration from the beginning" Buckingham released the title track and first single late January 2017 with the accompanying, self directed and edited video seeing Brisbane artist Lauren De Luca transform Buckingham's face into a gorgeously sombre water scene.
