But this outing finds him doing a great job of leading the band. Three songs come from Burnside ("Miss Maybelle," the frantic shuffle "Goin' Down South," and "Shake 'Em on Down"), while most of the rest are traditional, including the roaring "France Chance" and "Cocaine Bill," where the bass does a perfect imitation of a cakewalk tuba. Brown lets his trademark slide sing throughout, with a wonderfully raw tone, while his voice carries the weight of years heavily -- he doesn't just sing the blues, he lives them. To hear him on the goodbye of "Fare Thee Well Blues" is to experience loneliness. With a tight band of Cedric Burnside and Takeeshi Imura, he can handle anything, put the grease on it, and take it down home. Back to You R&B singer Ketara "Keke" Wyatt was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, where she grew up listening to a variety of R&B and gospel and came from a very musical family. Both of her parents sang in church; her mother was a vocalist, her father an organist. Wyatt's parents had her singing in church as a child but did not discourage her from pursuing a career in secular music. In fact, they exposed her to a lot of secular R&B at home. When Wyatt was in her early teens, she sang in various female groups -- one of which was a very early version of Destiny's Child. It was also during Wyatt's adolescent years that she met her mentor, Steve "Stone" Huff, who is known for his work with the Isley Brothers, Joe, Avant, and other major R&B artists. Huff produced some demos for Wyatt and went about trying to get her a record deal; in 2000, she signed with MCA. That year, Huff brought Avant and Wyatt together for a remake of Ren?? & Angela's 1983 ballad "My First Love," which was included on Avant's platinum My Thoughts. In 2001, Huff produced Wyatt's Soul Sista and did much of the writing; the only track he didn't write or co-write was Wyatt's cover of Patti LaBelle's "If Only You Knew." The album was released in November 2001 and sold over 500,000 copies in the U.S., which granted it gold status. Despite her early success, Wyatt went on to encounter a series of obstacles. She signed to Cash Money, where she was set to release her second album, Emotional Rollercoaster. However, its lead single failed to gain significant traction, and the album was subsequently shelved. A later deal with TVT yielded a similar result; she recorded yet another album, Ghetto Rose, but the label went under before it was released. After signing with Shanachie, she was finally able to release her second and third full-lengths: 2010's Who Knew? (with productions from Troy Oliver, Tank, and the Underdogs) and 2011's Unbelievable! (featuring Ruben Studdard on a remake of Cherrelle and Alexander O'Neal's "Saturday Love"). In 2012, Wyatt co-starred on TV One's reality series R&B Divas and appeared on Faith Evans' album of the same title. She signed to Aratek and debuted on the independent label in 2014 with an EP, Ke' Ke. Blues Blues Lovin' has a tempo that makes you feel good about the world it is high energy but never frenzied she has control of the vocals and the band this is her music Angela's style of the blues with a voice that is full of character but not raucous. The ten tracks on the album have been selected to portray an element of Angela's vocals that are always at the centre of shaping the sound, the title track sees her band's music wrapping themselves around the vocals including with stylish slide guitar and horns that set Angela's inner soul free. Hopeless is blues that allows the vocals once again to soar and work with the searing guitar riffs as the girl from Huddersfield shows a rawness as the lyrics pierce and the soul of the music is ripped bare. Better Man is gritty blues and the harmonica playing is the perfect foil for the depth and range of her vocals, this is a down to earth track that grounds the album at the half-way point. The last four tracks of the album continue with the same mix of vocals and instrumentation, at times I would have liked to have heard the instruments pick up the blues story to give different shapes and tempo to the album. This is partly achieved on Ice Cold Tears a slower number with some lovely guitar licks giving the track some ice cold shivers and I would have liked to have seen the voice take a breather and the guitar pick up the icy mood and then her voice would have had more dramatic impact that it definitely has the power to achieve. (1957): This out-of-print Capitol LP, one of many that June Christy cut during the 1950s, features her soft but swinging vocals accompanied by a 12-piece group arranged by Pete Rugolo. While the backup musicians include trumpeter Don Fagerquist, trombonist Frank Rosolino, altoist Bud Shank and tenor saxophonist Bob Cooper (all of whom are unidentified in the very brief liner notes), the cool-toned singer is the main star. The Nashville ideal of recent decades, dictating that songs have to be perky, positive and affirmational, is undermined by unhealthy relationship songs and heartache songs like "Just So You Know," "The Truth Lies Somewhere In Between," "I Can Always Count On You (To Let Me Down)," "The Good Times," "In My Blood" -- and then "My Pain Ain't News" sums it all up.
