His dis[beeep]line in the blues is well respected, and his compositions pay homage to just that. His newest album, Screaming In The Wind, continues his tried and true resume. Dudley delivers some versatile tracks, ranging from ballads to head bangers, bluesy head bangers. "Pack It Up" is a jazzy tune, chock full of that good 'ol brass section. "Red Line" is a complete 180 from the former. This track kicks things up a notch, with a powerful, driving riff that sinks its claws deep. This tremolo of sounds culminates into a high-octane solo on lead guitar. "Screaming In The Wind" is a little Hanni El Khatib, with a steady, edgy riff throughout. This one pits guitar and vocals against one another, as they duke it out for sole ownership. This track also boasts nice harmonies with solid keys and percussion to back it all up. "Sleeping In The Sunlight" turns the tables for an unexpected sound in the mix. Dudley brushes off the slide for this tune. A tasteful acoustic intro entwined with electric licks, this song has a catchy beat and chorus. Screaming In The Wind is a classic example of Taft's talents. He offers an admirable testament to the blues to all those out there seeking something of the nature. His talent is not missed, as it shines through on all tracks. Time for a Change Doug MacLeod (vocals, guitar, National guitar) Janiva Magness, Ray Williams, Terry Evans (vocals) Rich Delgrosso (mandolin) John Pearse (strings) James Harman (harmonica) Dave Kida (drums) In 2000, you would have been hard-pressed to find a more lowdown blues-oriented recording than singer/guitarist Doug MacLeod's Whose Truth, Whose Lies?, which should appeal to anyone who likes his/her blues dark, shadowy, and moody. This isn't a CD that tries to win you over with slickness; whether MacLeod is going electric or acoustic, he obviously identifies with the simplicity and honesty that characterized the country blues artists of the '30s and '40s. Not that Whose Truth, Whose Lies? sounds like a recording from that time. MacLeod's lyrics obviously aren't pre-World War II lyrics, and he has been influenced by soul, rock, and folk as well as country and urban blues. Not everything on this superb album adheres to a 12-bar format, and some of the tunes fall into the folk category. But even when he is getting into a folk or R&B groove, MacLeod can always be counted on to provide a wealth of blues feeling. Whose Truth, Whose Lies? may not be the work of a purist, but it is certainly compelling. They were one of the hardest working blues bands in town and were regulars on the Pioneer Square circuit, especially at Larry's Greenfront, back when it was a blues club. Remain A graduate of the Berklee School of Music, Donny McCaslin (born Donald Paul McCaslin) has had a saxophone in his hands from his earliest years and has integrated the entire range of sounds that a tenor sax can produce into his repertoire: from mainstream modern to funky fusion to laid-back balmy ballads, all flavored with his own experimental style. McCaslin's father originally taught high-school English but favored being a jazz musician, playing the vibraphone and piano in local gigs with young McCaslin in the audience. When he was only 12 years old, McCaslin joined his father's group. By the time he was in high school he had formed his own band, and was selected to play at the Monterey Jazz Festival for three years in a row. During high school he also performed with an eight-piece salsa band, and spent much time at the Kuumbwa Jazz Center, where nationally known jazz artists gathered. He studied with Paul Contos and Brad Hecht, accomplished members of his father's groups, and was influenced by the likes of John Coltrane, Michael Brecker, and Sonny Stitt. McCaslin's technique and expression allowed him to tour with all-star youth ensembles through Europe and Japan, and won him a full scholarship to Berklee College of Music starting in 1984. His main influences there included Gary Burton, Herb Pomeroy, Billy Pierce, George Garzone, and Joe Viola. During his senior year at Berklee he joined vibraphonist Burton's quintet, and for four years the group toured Europe, Japan, North America, and South America. During 1991, after moving to New York City, McCaslin became a member of Steps Ahead, and played with them for over three years. Michael Brecker, formerly of Steps Ahead, had been one of McCaslin's teenage idols; now McCaslin was replacing him. McCaslin co-wrote two of the compositions that appeared on the group's album Vibe. During those same years McCaslin actively gigged with top jazz artists and groups, such as the Gil Evans Orchestra, George Gruntz Concert Jazz Band, the Danilo Perez Quartet, the Maria Schneider Jazz Orchestra, and Santi Debriano's Panamaniacs, plus he appeared on many recordings. In 1996 McCaslin was featured with John Medeski (organ), Doug Yates (clarinet), and Uri Caine (piano) in Ken Schaphorst's big-band work "Uprising." Three years later Naxos Records released the piece on Purple, and the jazz media gave McCaslin's solo work rave reviews. During 1997 McCaslin joined with David Binney (alto), Scott Colley (bass), and Kenny Wollesen (drums) to form Lan Xang, an experimental jazz collective that released Mythology. The name Lan Xang symbolizes freedom, the bandmembers' concept of experimental jazz. In 2000 Lan Xang released Hidden Gardens and they continue to play gigs together, presenting unique forays in group improvisation. In 1998 Naxos released Exile and Discovery, McCaslin's first solo record. Playing with him were Ugonna Okegwo (bass), Bruce Barth (piano), and Billy Drummond (drums).Arabesque Records released 2000's Seen from Above, an album in which McCaslin integrates blues, swing, and fusion, reflecting his skill both as a composer and a soloist.Way Through, released by Arabesque in September 2003, was his third solo album. Donny McCaslin's reputation, technical skills, and artistic gifts are unique, attracting a long list of collaborators with whom he has performed and recorded. Almost Everything (5:37) Many modern jazz fans consider the 1960s as the creative apogee of the music. The abundance of top-flight musicians, coupled with a near continuous stream of boundary breaking innovations, made for a creatively explosive combination. The downside to this artistic boon was that many high caliber conceptualists got lost in the deluge. A case could easily be made for counting Don Friedman among this number, as his early '60s albums for Riverside offered some of the most ingenious variations on the piano trio format of the era. Sadly, they were largely overshadowed by more overtly provocative offerings of artists like Cecil Taylor, Thelonious Monk and Dave Brubeck. Careful listening to Friedman's early albums reveals that his relegation to the fringes was completely undeserved. Rather than compromise his creativity, he teamed up with guitarist Atilla Zoller and decided to go even further out. The decision ultimately didn't help his career, but it did result in some of the most adventurous piano-driven jazz of the decade. Over the years Friedman's remained active, and while his fame hasn't risen much beyond the niche community that is creative improvised music, he's sustained a remarkably high standard of quality in his music. Uniting with a crew of younger players for this latest outing, Friedman's form sounds undiminished by nearly five decades in the jazz life. The quartet balances four originals with four thoughtfully chosen standards making for a program ripe with both the fresh and familiar. Levy's "Positivity" gorgeously reflects the sentiment of its title in musical terms. Ferguson has an early shot at the spotlight and his strings practically sing in the crystalline sonics of the studio. Friedman adds delicate accents, eventually regaining the lead in a sparkling outpouring of chords. Ferguson's fluid breaks beat a soothing path to an elegant recapitulation of the theme by Levy's effervescent tenor. The saxophonist sits out on "My Foolish Heart," and his absence allows for even more intimate interplay between Friedman and his rhythm section mates. After peeling off lush scalar runs down his keyboard, the pianist lays out, leaving room for another contemplative pizzicato foray from Ferguson. Jobim's "Desafinado" gains a minor harmonic facelift, but still retains its signature beat. Levy sails breezily through the changes, sounding at first slightly like Desmond might have if he had embraced the tenor horn. His tone later hardens, but his melodically infused lines retain relaxed buoyancy in phrasing above the counterpoint of his partners. Friedman's "Memory of Scotty," dedicated his long departed colleague Scott LaFaro, pays balladic tribute to the bassist and acts as a cleverly conceived vehicle for Ferguson's own strings, both arco and plucked. Bechet's "Petite Fleur" finds Levy on uncredited soprano, in deference to the composer. His translucent tone on the straight horn fits snugly into the Latinized structures of the arrangement. Friedman's graceful accompaniment and eventual solo further contributes to a feeling of reposeful calm. The upbeat rhythms of the pianist's "Almost Everything" presage the session's impending end, but the quartet still has space for a final stretch through regions of warmly voiced lyricism. Sweeping accolades and fame may not be in the cards for Friedman, but based on the strengths of this session the situation doesn't seem to matter much. He'll keep doing what he does best, whether there's a widespread audience or not. Slamboree One of the greatest of all tenor players, Don Byas' decision to move permanently to Europe in 1946 resulted in him being vastly underrated in jazz history books. His knowledge of chords rivalled Coleman Hawkins, and, due to their similarity in tones, Byas can be considered an extension of the elder tenor. He played with many top swing bands, including those of Lionel Hampton (1935), Buck Clayton (1936), Don Redman, Lucky Millinder, Andy Kirk (1939-1940), and most importantly Count Basie (1941-1943). An advanced swing stylist, Byas' playing looked toward bop. He jammed at Minton's Playhouse in the early '40s, appeared on 52nd Street with Dizzy Gillespie, and performed a pair of stunning duets with bassist Slam Stewart at a 1944 Town Hall concert. After recording extensively during 1945-1946 (often as a leader), Byas went to Europe with Don Redman's band, and (with the exception of a 1970 appearance at the Newport Jazz Festival) never came back to the U.S. He lived in France, the Netherlands, and Denmark; often appeared at festivals; and worked steadily. Whenever American players were touring, they would ask for Byas, who had opportunities to perform with Duke Ellington, Bud Powell, Kenny Clarke, Dizzy Gillespie, Jazz at the Philharmonic (including a recorded tenor battle with Hawkins and Stan Getz), Art Blakey, and (on a 1968 recording) Ben Webster. That road has led to the summer release of his newest album Prospect Hill. Diving way back into yesteryear, Flemons set out to combine several styles including southern folk, spiritual, and front porch jug and strings while pulling them together to make one cohesive album. She has developed "Diunna's style of Blues" in the same tradition as so many other great Texas blues men and women. She combines intricate patches of jazz, gospel and heartfelt soul to create a kind of blues that takes one on an emotional roller coaster ride. Diunna and her band Blue Mercy have performed throughout the United States and Internationally. She has performed at the Lugano Blues Festival and the Bern Jazz Festival, both in Switzerland, as well as the Cahors Blues Festival in France. For the remainder of the 2008 season, Diunna is slated to do festivals in Norway, Canada, Australia, England, Italy, France, Virgin Islands and a return trip to Switzerland, as well as other performances throughout Europe, Asia and the United States.
